Name too long

I have a client where wife last name is different from husband but she has three words in her last name. As a result ATX system is truncating her last name but that in turn is causing IRS to reject the return because of no match between name and ss number.

How do I shorten her name to pass IRS system?

Paper file my friend, I have had the same problem since 2005 for a couple. Don't forget you will need to include form (8948) when paper filing a return.

The IRS matches the SSN with the first four letters of the last name. Truncation doesn't matter. What does matter is which of those three words is actually on her SS card as her last name.

Skip middle name or initial. Use only the name that is the "first" of her last names.

I have a child of a client whose name is Anna Maria Gloria FXXXXXXXX AXXXXXXX. I have to file her as Gloria AXXXXXXX. So, one never knows what the rhyme or reason is. The first year, I had to play the "guessing game" with SSA.

Have the client call SS....to see exactly how they have her last name. They may have what she thinks is her last name as her middle name.
