ETax847 Posted February 12, 2014 Report Posted February 12, 2014 A client of mine said he gave over $2k to his church over the course of 2013. Is any support needed to back this claim up? Quote
taxtrio Posted February 12, 2014 Report Posted February 12, 2014 Confirm that they have receipts or cancelled checks in their records. And ask if any donations were 250.00 or more at on time.. for those they need a letter from the church with the proper wording. They have to have the letter in their possession BEFORE filing the return. The date on the letter has to be a date that is BEFORE return is filed or the IRS will disallow if audited. Quote
Terry D EA Posted February 12, 2014 Report Posted February 12, 2014 I agree with taxtrio completely. Get the letter with the appropriate language from the church. Do confirm the receipts or cancelled checks. BTW - a client stating what they have given is never considered as any type of verification or confirmation for purposes of filing a tax return. 2 Quote
