So........couple comes into my little office asks me to do there taxes. Interestingly enough they had just left "A Nationally Advertised Firm" preparer didn't know how to handle overpaid FICA, tuition credit, limits on itemized deductions or anything else it appears. Total amounts refund on fed 9,000, amt due on state 3,000.

My calculations after taking the time to do the return correctly. Federal Refund 12,000 & state due 1,500.

Thankfully, they came to my office.

Can't wait to hear everyone's responses.

Not as busy with the local's in the new location as I'd like to be at this point. Sidney clients are kicking my "whazoo" though!

I've met some really nice people here though I gotta say that much. My thinking is a non-local in a small town just don't smell the same lol!

It will take some time in this town I can tell that much.

I remember about 6 or 7 years ago - I received a call from a young woman who got my number out of the phone book - she had just left the local HRB office because they did not know "what forms to use" to report your "consulting income" - of course I told her to come to my office - turns out she was a "dancer" at a downtown "gentlemans club"

Prepared the Schedule "C" and she owed a ton of money (had her sign a release indicating that she disclosed all her income, etc. to me) - and she was still happy. She was more afraid of getting in trouble with the IRS than anything else.

Is she the one that had the boob job and took the cost as a business expense because it was a necessity for her job?

Great work single dad. I not only tell my clients that they have people but, PEOPLE THAT CARE. I know a lot of my clients. Small town. I care that there returns are prepared correctly. They can go to that "chain" but they are not there for them after season but one day a week. I'm here 3 days a week in my office and they know that I work the other 2 at my house. They all have my telephone number and can find my name in the phone book for my home phone. I'm not available 24-7, but they know I will call them back when they leave a message. Anyway for the most part WE ARE PEOPLE THAT CARE!

WE ARE PEOPLE THAT CARE! ...but I had to escort a client/friend out of my door this year. She told me there was not enough $$$ in her account to cover the check she was giving me. She hadn't filed 4th Q payroll taxes, nor end of the year. To protect myself, I escorted. I already completed a payroll tax audit for her...squeaky clean. She never filed since. Whattaya gonna do? I decided this year to set boundaries. I can't work for free...nor chase down people. NOT MY JOB ; ) Client actually asked me if I had other clients (say what???), like they would allow me to work for her for free. NO WAY! Did I say I escorted her out the door? Wonder why?

Very good, per the Tax Court it is an allowable deduction IF the size is of such immense proportions that there is no personal benefit. lbb

Let's be honest. Big chain preparers at the front line are people that just "graduated". In July 2007, they had no idea about taxes, they took a course and passed, then they get hire in January. Perception is very important and that's why they are in business.
