JohnH Posted January 9, 2014 Report Posted January 9, 2014 Borrowed from a post I liked over on another forum:"The Time has come," the Tax pro said,"To talk of many things:Of Wages, Tips, and Interest,Of Donations of Rings,And why the business profits not,And whither taxes' stings."(With apologies to Lewis Carroll) 4 Quote
Mr. Pencil Posted January 11, 2014 Report Posted January 11, 2014 To talk of many things: Of Wages, Tips, and Interest I can't get my clients to talk about tips. They always say there's nothing to talk about! Quote
JohnH Posted January 11, 2014 Author Report Posted January 11, 2014 Based on what I've seen regarding tips, I don't think I should eat at a restaurant where a client works. When they tell me they earned no tips, I'd have to tell them I can't prepare their return. Quote
Jack from Ohio Posted January 11, 2014 Report Posted January 11, 2014 If a client that worked as a server in a restaurant said he/she had no tips, then I would say, "Then you have no refund." Why would you work there for just the half minimum wage they pay? I would then probably excuse them as a client. If they deliberately lied about tips, what other faulty information have they been giving me? 1 Quote
kcjenkins Posted January 11, 2014 Report Posted January 11, 2014 I never had one claim zero tips, in fact I'd have been insulted if someone told me that. However, I sometimes suspected that they were a bit light on their totals. However, after they realized, as was normally true in my area, that they got a larger refund with more tips, the numbers got more reasonable in future years. Quote
Lion EA Posted January 11, 2014 Report Posted January 11, 2014 I wouldn't take that waitress as a client. But, I would eat at her restaurant all the time, because I wouldn't have to tip her! 5 Quote

Catherine Posted January 11, 2014 Report Posted January 11, 2014 I did have one person claim very low tips one year -- and in that instance, it made sense. Client worked at a restaurant but was assigned to the drinks/soda/shakes prep area, there was a counter with two stools there that were rarely used. Drinks person also got paid minimum wage because the assumption was no tips at all there. But that was a rare, special case. And some tips were indeed claimed. So, has this topic now gotten hijacked? It started out as a twist on a poem and is now a discussion about tips, restaurants, and clients with honesty issues? Quote
mcb39 Posted January 11, 2014 Report Posted January 11, 2014 So, has this topic now gotten hijacked? It started out as a twist on a poem and is now a discussion about tips, restaurants, and clients with honesty issues? It started out clearly marked as OT-Tax Humor 1 Quote
JohnH Posted January 11, 2014 Author Report Posted January 11, 2014 Is it even possible for an "OT" post to get hijacked? Quote
Mr. Pencil Posted January 11, 2014 Report Posted January 11, 2014 Not in my humble opinion. What's a humble opinion? I don't even know what that means! 1 Quote
Catherine Posted January 11, 2014 Report Posted January 11, 2014 My comment was a joke. We need someone (graphic design type) to develop two new fonts: one for humor, and one for sarcasm. Both of which are almost impossible to show any way but verbally! 1 Quote
Lion EA Posted January 11, 2014 Report Posted January 11, 2014 tongue in cheek/sarcasm? big grin/humor? 1 Quote
taxxcpa Posted January 13, 2014 Report Posted January 13, 2014 What's a humble opinion? I don't even know what that means! In my humble opinion it means that it's what I think, or maybe what I think I think. 1 Quote
JohnH Posted January 13, 2014 Author Report Posted January 13, 2014 If I must use a symbol to indicate sarcasm, hasn't the sarcasm failed? Quote
BulldogTom Posted January 13, 2014 Report Posted January 13, 2014 In my humble opinion it means that it's what I think, or maybe what I think I think. I think I know what you thought you said. Tom Hollister, CA Quote
