mcb39 Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Schools ARE closed here tomorrow again as tomorrow is now supposed to be worse than today, if that is possible. My Atomic Weather Station in my office now reads -21 degrees. All stay safe and warm! Quote
Catherine Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 I wish I had some ice cleats. Would have helped. Had to walk gingerly with my snow boots and step on dry spots. i wish school would cancel tomorrow because the kids who walk to school will not make it!. YakTrax. Attach to the bottom of your boots. Any outdoor store (and some hardware stores) will have them. However they are NOT magic and if you put your weight where they are not, down you will go. Ask me how I know this... https://www.yaktrax.com/ and to mail order them -- always try Sierra Trading Post! http://www.sierratradingpost.com/s~yaktrax/?perPage=96 Who cares if they're last year's color? I get ALL my wool socks from these folks, too. 2 Quote
Guest Taxed Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 I heard next week we are suppose to get seasonal temperatures back again! I am praying for it. Quote
SaraEA Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 We got a new Husqvarna snow blower this year (to replace the 30 year old one that still worked but no longer got remotely close to the ground or threw the snow past the driveway). Honest, it has heated handles! The only problem is we were convinced that by buying the new machine, we would be assured of a mild winter with almost no snow to have to blow (kind of like washing your car assures it will rain the next day). Should we ask for our money back? 4 Quote
Guest Taxed Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Husqvarna snow blowers are top of the line! If you got one hang on to it for the next generation! Quote
joanmcq Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Well I'm here in what on the weathermap is apparently the only warm place in the country. Yay for CA, BUT.....we're dry as a bone. No rain, no snow, no precip at all. The reservoirs are going dry. And this is supposed to be the rainy season... Quote
Guest Taxed Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 This morning South Pole was only -7F. Minneapolis -17F! Quote
Gail in Virginia Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 The mountains just west of me in Virginia have some temperatures in the - range. My son was home for winter break but sent him back last night to check the house and make sure the plumbing did not freeze. We are still on the + side here in Southwest Virginia where I live. It was 3 this morning. 1 Quote
Guest Taxed Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Is this a house where no one is living for the winter? When we used to go out of town in the winter, we shutoff the main water valve just as a precaution, and left the faucet at the highest level open. It does prevent pipes from bursting. 1 Quote
Gileam Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 We only lost power a few years back at my house during the winter storm that passed through Georgia. I found the best light solution over the summer. It is called Luci and made by mpowered. If you want to search for this affordable alternative for light. I would google search for Luci Light. It was only 15.00 and have more than a few laying around the house and the car. Its light enough (no pun intended) to put in your jacket pocket. 1 Quote
Catherine Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 This morning South Pole was only -7F. Minneapolis -17F! Yeah, but it's high summer in the Antarctic right now -- remember that! Quote
ILLMAS Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 I came to the office today, looking like a construction worker, no way I was going to wear dress slacks in this weather. I really really feel bad for the homeless people, yesterday temp was brutal. Quote
Guest Taxed Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 One of the local Church had their basement open as a shelter with warm food. If you sleep outside in this cold you will NOT wake up! Quote
Lion EA Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 My son gave both my husband and me Dryguy GripOns a couple of winters ago. We've used them to walk out to the mailbox in icy weather. He'd been using them around The Inn at Starlight Lake, PA, for some time. Just stretch them on over shoes or boots. We may drive out to our mailbox today! Quote
Catherine Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Lion -- very similar to YakTrax! Highly recommended. Quote
schirallicpa Posted January 8, 2014 Report Posted January 8, 2014 I just thought it was funny that this is listed as a "hot" topic. It's 2 degrees here:) 3 Quote
Jack from Ohio Posted January 8, 2014 Report Posted January 8, 2014 Heat wave!! Up to 21 this afternoon and 40 with rain on Saturday!! Quote
redux Posted January 8, 2014 Report Posted January 8, 2014 Lion -- very similar to YakTrax! Highly recommended. If you want the best in ice creepers (cleats) try these: http://www.amazon.com/Stabilicers-Original-Heavy-Traction-Cleat/dp/B003DQURO2/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1389214160&sr=8-3&keywords=stabilicers+ice+cleats In addition to being sure footed on ice...the cleats are replacible by the user for a very reasonable price. kcjenkins Posted January 8, 2014 Author Report Posted January 8, 2014 Not to mention they cost less. Both seem like good investments for anyone with a frequent snow or ice problem. Quote
Catherine Posted January 11, 2014 Report Posted January 11, 2014 So today we got into the mid-50's and had torrential rain with thunder. Just a couple days ago we never got out of the single digits. I think my thermometer is getting whiplash from these swings! 3 Quote
