ILLMAS Posted November 5, 2013 Report Posted November 5, 2013 Let's say a returning EIC client comes in, does one have to request copies of documents submitted the prior year? I normally request a copy the child birth certificate, SS card, Medicaid card or school records, most often they bring the birth certicate and SS card and I keep a copy with clients records, it might sound like a dumb question but I hate to have to pay a penalty for not requesting information the given year. Guest Taxed Posted November 5, 2013 Report Posted November 5, 2013 Good question. With my existing clients, once I have those documents that you listed on file, I just ask them if the living/custody arrangement with the children has changed since the last return. With divorced parents many kids go back and forth so i will document that and I have the taxpayer sign the due diligence form also. Quote
kcjenkins Posted November 5, 2013 Report Posted November 5, 2013 No need for copies " of documents submitted the prior year" since you already have copies, assuming you scanned them or copied and saved them. Quote
