ILLMAS Posted November 1, 2013 Report Posted November 1, 2013 I didn't know the ACA could bring smiles to some faces http://money.cnn.com/2013/11/01/smallbusiness/sex-workers-obamacare/index.html?hpt=hp_t2 Quote
Guest Taxed Posted November 1, 2013 Report Posted November 1, 2013 I like this quote: Organized by "Siouxsie Q," a Bay Area sex worker, the event was meant to encourage other sex workers to enroll in the new insurance exchanges. It was a rousing success: Nearly 40 men and women attended and almost all of them filed enrollment paperwork. Now if they can replicate that type of success at other enrollment parties with young healthy men and women who enjoy sex would be " a rousing success" Quote
kcjenkins Posted November 1, 2013 Report Posted November 1, 2013 I think the next sentence is equally important: In the all-cash, off-the-books sex industry, workers can be particularly high risk and insurance is often out of reach. I have to wonder both how much of their "all-cash, off-the-books" income they actually report, and also wonder how much these "high risk" individuals will actually contribute to keeping down the costs, as we are being told they would? Sounds like all this group, while young, is going to be getting major subsidies, not contributing to other's subsidies. And given their "high risk' occupation, are more likely to be needing health services themselves. 1 Quote
Guest Taxed Posted November 1, 2013 Report Posted November 1, 2013 Most of them will probably qualify for a subsidy or Medicaid expansion. Their will be a market for their services as long as humans are made the way they are, BUT with affordable healthcare may be we can slow down the spread of disease. This has been tried in many European and Asian countries where access to healthcare for sex workers has helped slow down the spread of disease. In the interest of public health, this does make sense. As for how much of their cash income they will declare, enough to qualify! Quote
