If the return was efiled prior to the deadline, I believe you have 5 days to fix the errors and resubmit or 10 days to paper file.

That's to be timely filed. Many taxpayers would have little or no penalty for filing late.

If he is due a refund, 3 years from April 15, 2013 to preserve his refund. No penalties for IRS.

The MEF system will close down sometime in November. If he has dependent issues, not likely you will have those resolved in time to e-file. Paper file is the right way to go.
