MAMalody Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 I saw on another message board that CA is considering taxing or assessing a fee of some type for out-of-state preparers who do CA returns. To date I have been unable to locate anything on this. Is this true? Can you provide any info or link if this is so? Thanks. Quote
Guest Taxed Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 How would that work? I am in MA a client of mine also a resident of MA gets some income from CA that requires the filing of a CA non resident return, now I am going to be taxed on that transaction? If my fee for the return is say $100 (Fed, MA and CA), who gets to decide how much for CA? If I do, it is $1 for CA , so CA taxes me on that $1. I know NY charges a registration fee if you prepare 10 or more NY returns. Quote

Guest Taxed Posted August 9, 2013 Report Posted August 9, 2013 This is what I saw on the CTEC website. Could be dated. Q & A - What if I live outside of California, can I prepare California tax returns? Yes. The law is limited to overseeing tax preparers who are preparing state and federal tax returns for a fee within the State of California. Out-of-state tax preparers are not obligated to meet California requirements. Quote
