ljwalters Posted August 7, 2013 Report Posted August 7, 2013 My opinion is no. but I have been wrong before. Client racked up a lot of medical miles to visit and help care for an elderly aunt that had a stroke. (Now she lives close and she still care for her) Are these medical miles deductible? Quote
Guest Taxed Posted August 7, 2013 Report Posted August 7, 2013 No. Medical Expenses Paid for Others Deductible medical expenses include expenses paid for the taxpayer’s spouse and for any person who qualifies as the taxpayer’s dependent (for claiming an exemption), except that some of the tests required to claim an exemption do not have to be met to deduct an individual’s medical expenses. Dependents, for deducting medical expenses, must be U.S. citizens or nationals or residents of the U.S., Canada or Mexico and the taxpayer’s: • Child, foster child, stepchild, sibling, half-sibling, step-sibling and any of their descendants, if that person met the following tests for 2012: –Was under age 19 (or under age 24 and a full-time student) or permanently and totally disabled, –Lived with the taxpayer for more than half the year and –Did not provide more than half of his own support. –For whom the taxpayer provided more than half the support for the year. Taxpayers can deduct medical expenses paid for some individuals who don’t qualify as their dependent, such as a parent for whom the taxpayer provides over half the support, but the parent’s gross income exceeds $3,800 (for 2012) [iRC §213(a)].
