Yardley CPA Posted March 3, 2013 Report Posted March 3, 2013 Client adopted a son in August 2012. They yet to obtain a Social Security Number and never applied for an ATIN. I assume the return cannot be filed without having the SSN for their Dependent son, correct? It's my understanding that applying for an SSN can take up to 6 weeks to complete. Your thoughts, please? It seems an filing an extension is the way to go in this case (should the SSN not be obtained by April 15th?) Quote
Pacun Posted March 3, 2013 Report Posted March 3, 2013 SS numbers are issued within a month. You still have time or file an extension. Quote
kcjenkins Posted March 5, 2013 Report Posted March 5, 2013 One suggestion, have them check with whatever agency or attorney helped with the adoption. There may already be a SSN applied for, or even issued, that they just are unaware of. Or almost always an ATIN is applied for by the agency, in my experience. Quote
