Janitor Bob Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 All of you may know this, but I did not. Client moved temporarily for new job assignment after filing her return. Changed address with post office and had mail forwarded to new temporary address. All IRS correspondence was forwarded (Notice that had part of refund held for state tax debt), but refund check never arrived. Finally today (2 months after prior notice was received) she received notice (forwarded to new address) that refund check was not deliverable (sent to old address) and was returned to IRS. I can only assume that although IRS correspondence is forwarded, refund checks are not....never knew that. Quote

I no longer trust ordinary First Class Mail. Any documents I send go priority mail with tracking. Ironic isn't it? The Postal Service has millions less letters to deliver, yet service is the worst it has ever been.... Quote
Janitor Bob Posted February 10, 2013 Author Report Posted February 10, 2013 So is this an IRS decision or a Postal service decision? Quote
Jack from Ohio Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 So is this an IRS decision or a Postal service decision? Postal decision asked for by the IRS. So the answer is both. I have seen checks be forwarded, but the rule is that the check goes back to the IRS. Quote
kcjenkins Posted February 11, 2013 Report Posted February 11, 2013 I have a S-I-L who was postmaster in a small town. She told me that they were supposed to send them back to IRS but if she knew the person she went ahead and forwarded them. Of course, she knew most of them. 1 Quote
Terry O Posted February 11, 2013 Report Posted February 11, 2013 After 10 years of apparently having the wrong address (193 Main St vs ACTUAL 195 Main St) a client called because he received a letter from the IRS his refund was undeliverable! The mail carrier just automatically put it in my clients mailbox for 10 years - - nobody ever caught the mistake, until a new carrier came along. He refused to give it to the client. I understand that I made a mistake - -I understand that nobody ever caught it. What the client who is mentally challenged did NOT understand - -where was his money!!!! Lesson learned. Quote

mcb39 Posted February 12, 2013 Report Posted February 12, 2013 Does that mean that when I think I am wrong, I am not really wrong because I am left-handed and thinking with the wrong side of my brain? Just wondered if I am not wrong because I'm right. 1 Quote
Margaret CPA in OH Posted February 12, 2013 Report Posted February 12, 2013 Ummm, yes, I think I'm right about this, too, or not... Quote
