Janitor Bob Posted January 10, 2013 Report Posted January 10, 2013 I am working with a client to get current on her taxes. a few months ago, we finally got her 2010 return filed....Federal refund of $8,000. Received letter from IRS on Dec. 7th stating that they would be holding $2.000 of that refund to offset state taxes due from 2009. We knew this and I was happy to see that their refund amount and amount due to state agreed with my numbers. However, it has been several weeks and client has not received a refund check for the remaining $6,000. We have not yet filed her 2011 return (which will also be a large refund). Would the IRS be holding the $6,000 refund until her 2011 is filed? Maybe I am expecting too much, but since we received letter from IRS notifying of refund amount and amount held for state tax on Dec. 7th, I expected that client would have received her remaining refund by now. BulldogTom Posted January 10, 2013 Report Posted January 10, 2013 I am working with a client who had some filing "challenges" recently. The 2010 return had a large refund that we expected would be used to pay the other balance due returns. Nope, they held the 2010 refund. I had to get on the phone for about and hour working on all of the returns in question with the practitioner priority service. When we finally agreed on all the years and balances due, she released the refund to pay the back taxes. It may be worth a call to the IRS to help them speed up the process. Tom Hollister, CA Quote
Janitor Bob Posted January 10, 2013 Author Report Posted January 10, 2013 This client does not owe any back Federal taxes or other debt...she just had the one state tax debt. Her previous year returns were all refunds and 2011 will be refund as well. I just wondered if there was some "flag" in the IRS system that holds refunds until all returns are filed. This is the only delay reason I can think of since IRS has already acknowledged the refund amount and held out and sent the debt amount to the state tax agency. Quote
Tax Prep by Deb Posted January 10, 2013 Report Posted January 10, 2013 I have had situations where they would not release the refund until all due years were filed. Deb! Quote
GeneInAlabama Posted January 10, 2013 Report Posted January 10, 2013 >>I have had situations where they would not release the refund until all due years were filed.<< Sounds logical to me. But when did the IRS start doing things that are logical? :dunno: Quote
