David Posted October 25, 2012 Report Posted October 25, 2012 I thought e-filing was not available for 2011 individual tax returns. However, on the ATX website it appears that the new e-file system allows 2010 and 2011 individual tax returns to still be e-filed. Am I reading that correctly? I have a few clients who are receiving refunds for 2011 and I'm wondering if I can e-file instead of paper file their returns. Thanks. Quote
Jack from Ohio Posted October 25, 2012 Report Posted October 25, 2012 Federal e-file will be available from now on for returns that meet MEF standards. This is true for 2011 & 2010. No state e-files for 2010 are being accepted at all. Several states are no longer accepting e-files for 2011. You will get a "Rejected by EFC" for the returns that are not being accepted by the states. ATX software will decide when you create the e-file in the return whether it is MEF acceptable. I have e-file 15 Fed and about 8 state returns for 2011 since Oct. 15. Also 3 Fed returns for 2010. 1 Quote
Tax Prep by Deb Posted October 25, 2012 Report Posted October 25, 2012 Yes for the Federal, but in California our returns are still filed legacy so we have to paper file State returns. Your software program determines if the returns is the new system which allows for e-file or if it is still a legacy return. If it is a legacy return you must paper file. (all my 2011 returns were the new system, whereas few of my 2010 are) Deb! Quote
David Posted October 25, 2012 Author Report Posted October 25, 2012 Thanks for your help. How do I know if CO will accept 2011 e-files before the client comes in? I would like to have the state return printed and ready if he has to paper file. Thanks. Quote

kcjenkins Posted October 26, 2012 Report Posted October 26, 2012 David, just go ahead and print the state return, and place it in a file folder on your desk. Then try the efile when the client comes in If it goes, you never mention that folder, [You can shred it after he leaves ] if it is rejected, you simply pick up the folder, pull out the return, and look really professional and prepared. David Posted October 26, 2012 Author Report Posted October 26, 2012 KC, Thanks for your tip. He usually comes in by himself and has to email me the e-file authorizations after his wife also signs the form. If, by chance, they both show up, I wouldn't get an accepted or rejected notification immediately from the EFC, would I? Doesn't it take some time to find out if the state e-file was accepted by the EFC? Thanks. Quote
kcjenkins Posted October 27, 2012 Report Posted October 27, 2012 You would get that immediately. Quote
