Margaret CPA in OH Posted August 29, 2012 Report Posted August 29, 2012 Daughter of a client was in Paris for several months in 2011 and received the equivalent of a W-2. However, she cannot translate nor will anyone here from Alliance Francaise. She of course would not meet any of the exclusion criteria but I think she would qualify for the foreign tax credit with tax withheld on her wages. Suggestions? Quote
Pacun Posted August 30, 2012 Report Posted August 30, 2012 You don't need to translate anything. Just ask how much she made and report it. You should check the tax treaty between the US and France. Remember that "withheld money" is not equivalent to "tax paid to another country" in some cases. Quote
TaxMan60601 Posted September 26, 2012 Report Posted September 26, 2012 That's for sure. But just have in mind that French residents, employed in France, are being paid net of social security contributions only. No income tax is deducted at source from their income. It is their responsibility to ensure that they retain sufficient funds to pay the tax liability when this to come - Income tax is paid in the year after the income is earned. So for 2011 income, the tax should be paid in 2012. So, I think you just may report her foreign income but you wont be able to claim any foreign tax credit on her return. Again, you better doublecheck this ... Quote
joanmcq Posted September 26, 2012 Report Posted September 26, 2012 You should be able to put the document into Google to get somewhat of a translation of the document. And I can't stress how much you'll need to read the tax treaty. Perhaps Tim or one of our other Canadian users can help with the translation. Quote
