Catherine Posted August 20, 2012 Report Posted August 20, 2012 Have a corporate client who (mildly) mucked up their payroll and 941s. I have 941-X's all prepared and ready to mail. When I file an amended 1040, I prepare a 1040X and attach the "as amended" 1040 and the "as originally filed" 1040 (all clearly marked with highlighter). Was taught to do this years ago as even though they generally say "just send the schedules with changes" the first thing they do upon receipt is ask for all the rest, as well. Have never had a request for further information doing it this way, for years. But I have never had to file a 941-X. Should I include copies of the "as amended" and "as originally filed" 941s as well? TIA, Catherine Quote
Elrod Posted August 20, 2012 Report Posted August 20, 2012 I would Catherine, That way they'll have them whether they want them or not. Just a sure fire way of being thorough. 1 Quote
Margaret CPA in OH Posted August 21, 2012 Report Posted August 21, 2012 I agree with Elrod. I've had to do only a few but I generally reside in the 'better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it' side. Given recent discussions about making things as clear as possible for those IRS folks, I think they will discard if not needed but may appreciate the guidance. 1 Quote
MAMalody Posted August 21, 2012 Report Posted August 21, 2012 I disagree. As a prior IRS auditor, all I ever wanted was what was requested. The only time I ever had to get additional information was when the required information, docs or forms where not originally provided or unclear. Additional information just gummed up the works and slowed down what I was doing because I had to wade through it to ensure some info that was necessary was not buried in the nonrequested information, Quote
Elrod Posted August 21, 2012 Report Posted August 21, 2012 That's what I go through every day now, Mamalody.....But....Isn't that what keeps us sharp? Clients always bring me more than what I need....It's the ones who don't that IRK my shorts. Quote
GeneInAlabama Posted August 21, 2012 Report Posted August 21, 2012 I agree with MAMalody. I have clients (as we all do) that provide a lot of unnecessary junk that I have to wade through to make sure that I don't miss something important in preparing their tax returns. I believe in making it as easy as possible for the IRS if I want a favor from them. Quote
Margaret CPA in OH Posted August 21, 2012 Report Posted August 21, 2012 Different strokes... I distinguish between excess, mixed up client information that is disorganized and voluminous from clearly marked orderly highlighted or red marked pages stating (I have a stamp) DO NOT PROCESS ATTACHMENT TO FORM 1040X ONLY or 940. If the amended form is on the top, the auditor, agent, even the client is free to pay attention only to that and disregard and/or discard any and all other documentation deemed superfluous or irrelevant. Different strokes - I have yet to be reprimanded, chastised or otherwise corrected for doing this. On the other hand, I have had relatively few amended returns of any kind. 1 Quote
Catherine Posted August 21, 2012 Author Report Posted August 21, 2012 The other difference is that this is not -requested- information. WE are initiating the amendment process. I think I'll append them, clearly marked and highlighted. Thanks, everyone! Quote
Catherine Posted August 21, 2012 Author Report Posted August 21, 2012 Going, going!! Giving a talk tonight and have my papers but still need to eat dinner and put on grown-up, giving-a-talk clothes. Ack!! :wall: Quote
BulldogTom Posted August 21, 2012 Report Posted August 21, 2012 Just forget the clothes. They will pay way more attention to your talk if you leave them at home ;o) Now...where are you speaking tonight? Tom Hollister, CA 1 Quote
Margaret CPA in OH Posted August 21, 2012 Report Posted August 21, 2012 Tom, you dog... although you may be right, too. But she is a really good speaker, at least in conversation and, of course, on this board. Just don't cross her - she's armed and a really good shot. 1 Quote
kcjenkins Posted August 21, 2012 Report Posted August 21, 2012 ROTFLMAO Tom, shame on you, you naughty boy! Cat will do great, I'm sure. 1 Quote
Catherine Posted August 22, 2012 Author Report Posted August 22, 2012 I did put on the grown-up clothes and looked just fine I think. The talk, however, got postponed to next month. The guy in charge had a family emergency and as a result their schedule changed and notifying me slipped through the cracks somehow. Not too far from here so I just lost a bit of travel time. Anyone who wants to see one of my talks can see a couple of recorded ones at my web site, www dot constitutiondecoded dot com . I am wearing clothing in all the videos. Sorry, Tom. ^_^ Quote
Elrod Posted August 22, 2012 Report Posted August 22, 2012 Hey!....I have a blue canopy just like that one in the video.....COOL... 1 Quote
