kcjenkins Posted April 20, 2012 Report Posted April 20, 2012 The IRS began releasing via FOIA a database of PTIN information. Due to concerns by practitioners they stopped but now after making some changes to their system it appears they will begin again releasing the information under FOIA. In a e-newsletter for practitioners today, April 20th, they have the following item that sends you to a IRS page that explains how you can update your information and now use a PO Box etc. The IRS item is: 4. FOIA Awareness for PTIN Holders The Freedom of Information Act requires the IRS to release certain information about preparer tax identification number (PTIN) holders. The IRS has created guidance on what information is released and how a PTIN holder can update their contact information. End of item. Clicking on Guidance above should send you to the page explaining things. A friend just updated his information to use a PO Box and other than not remembering his user ID or password (which they sent to him after answering a couple of questions) the process was not that difficult. So if you have an office in the home and you might not want your home address released under FOIA to everyone, you might wish update things. Quote
