JRS Posted April 20, 2012 Report Posted April 20, 2012 >>Where do I go for the test, or is it online?<< This is the IRS site that explains the test. The test itself, is giving at different sites which you can check online. As to reporting the CPE credits, the organization I belong to, reports them to both the IRS and CTEC (California requirements). Other CPE I have taken has been sent to CTEC by the provider. >>CPE, how does it work?<< You need to check and make sure you take the required courses. For California, it is one CPE equals 50 minutes of class at an onsite location. As to Internet or self study, the provider has the amount of hours approved CTEC, I would think, the IRS would works the same way. Quote
Lion EA Posted April 21, 2012 Report Posted April 21, 2012 If you're asking about receiving CPE for Tax Talk Live programs: If you watch live on your computer, you need to click a button a few times during the program when a chime sounds, screen pops up, whatever you're directed to do at the beginning of the program. No right or wrong, just being there. If you watch an archived program, you take a short test to prove you watched. I haven't done that. I imagine directions are at the beginning or end of the program with the test at the end or a link to the test at the end. New CPE rules require providers to report your CPE to the IRS and your state organizations based on your PTIN. Formerly, you kept track of your own certificates. I don't know the date of change, so it wouldn't hurt to keep your certificates. Quote

ACS41 Posted April 26, 2012 Report Posted April 26, 2012 Lion, Thank you for the information. I paid for credits but cannot determine what I have to do to register when I watch the May 8th lecture and receive credit for that specific lecture. Thank you. Quote
Lion EA Posted April 27, 2012 Report Posted April 27, 2012 I'm out of the groove for taking courses so am not remembering if what I'm saying has to do with IRS webinars, but I think if you sign up in advance and enter through a reminder email you'll receive, that the CPE is automatic. Think they "poll" during the program to confirm you're on the whole time. Maybe someone with a better memory will chime in. 1 Quote

jainen Posted April 28, 2012 Report Posted April 28, 2012 >>how am I supposed to find the money for this?<< The idea is that a professional practice should be able to support the resources it needs to keep up to date. Otherwise, like, check out the hobby loss rules. Quote
Lion EA Posted April 28, 2012 Report Posted April 28, 2012 This would be the perfect year to alert your clients that you are raising your prices a certain dollar amount or a certain percentage to cover your costs of complying with greater IRS oversight to protect taxpayers like your clients. Or, with 150 clients, you could increase everyone's price by $1 that they won't even notice and be able to pay for your test and 15 credits. Personally, I'd do the former, probably $10 or 5%, more for the PITA clients. What do you do when paper or toner or software or electricity prices increase? (I could always tell when my dentist had another child starting college, as his prices jumped.) Quote
shaire Posted May 29, 2012 Report Posted May 29, 2012 The 120-question test has a perfect score of 500, and a minimum passing score of 350. The test fee is $116, and is available at more than 260 Prometric testing sites. APlusCPE offers an IRS Competency Test study course that is also approved for 10-hours of RTRP CE. The online course is designed to help paid tax return preparers pass the IRS Competency Exam. The online prep course, which includes 10-hours of tax return preparer CE is $44.95. You can also add the Ethics and Law credits you need to satisfy all your CE requirements for just $44.95. To order go to www.APlusCPE.com. AplusCPE also has several news releases related to the PTIN requirements if you need more resources regarding any information about the test or the CE requirements I would check out www.APlusCPE.com!
