Janitor Bob Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 I have an elderly client that cannot find her statement from Social Security (SSA-1099). Before I have her search further, Have they been sent out and received by anyone? I cannot remember if they are sent out beginning of January or near the end of the month. Quote
Karen Lee Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 Haven't seen any yet. I would be receiving 3 directly. (Husband, Mom and Grandma) Karen Quote
Denne Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 I had a call from a client today and she just got hers. My husband has not received his as of yet.... They are apparently just starting to send them out. Quote
lydia33 Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 Read something on the ss page or email about a problem and that they had to remail a genormus (big)amount ot them. Told a client yesterday that and told them to wait. Quote
Slappy Tax Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 According to the SSA website, 1099-SSAs won't be available until the end of January. They can't be downloaded online, and if you don't receive one or lose yours, you have to ask for a replacement by mail. I think the website is saying all that trying to keep people from calling and bugging the agency about them. I think it's curious that the SSA doesn't make them available online for download. The SSA is usually 5 or 10 years ahead of the IRS when it comes to not being stupid about this kind of stuff ( to wit: the plain-paper W2s/W3s for the SSA vs the red-ink 1099s/1096s for the IRS; being able to file W2s online for free vs having to purchase software to efile 1099s; and being able to verify SSNs for W2s easily vs an insipidly complex registration and online verification procedure for FEINs for 1099s). http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/ssa.cf...amp;p_topview=1 Quote
Mel in Hawaii Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 Hmm... I too know of someone who has theirs, she was asking me what to do with it just yesterday. Quote
JRS Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 The problem was something about the wrong amounts of medicare premiums. For just straight SSA with no medicare the forms will be correct. This according to the Ca Society of Enrolled Agents. Quote
Slappy Tax Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 Now that you mention it, I do remember hearing or reading that the SSA plans to re-issue 1099-SSAs (some or all, I don't know) because of some snafu. Maybe check out ssa.gov. I know some people already have theirs. The website just tells everybody the 31st of January in a vain, pathetic attempt to cut down on calls to the agency. Quote
grambuffy Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 We received our SSA-1099 statements last week. We live in MI which might or might not help States of WI, FL, TX. CA and IL had a total of 728,609 forms sent out that had wrong information on them and are being reiussed. Information is from previous post was in JSOnline journal sentiinel posted Jan 16 http://jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=708198 Quote
JohnH Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 For someone who has been drawing SocSec for years, you can calulate the SocSec benefit by taking last year's figure and factoring in the percentage increase to arrive at the current year's benefit. So if the client has lost their form, absence of the SSA-1099 isn't a big issue unless they have deductible medical expenses. Quote
mcb39 Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 The E-Mail that I received from SS or IRS was in regard to the calculations being incorrect for recipients who had subscribed to Medicare Part D. How would you calculate that, John? Quote
Teri2414 Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 I received one for my daughter's benefits from her father's disability weeks ago. Quote
JohnH Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 Marilyn: If the client doesn't know the amount of their Part D premium or if it can't be dtermined, I guess they will have to wait until after Jan 25. Quote

Wisconsin News Flash.....my husbands's came today. It is accurate, but he does NOT have Part D.... Quote
Linda Mathey Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 Per SSA, the SSA 1099 that have a problem are those where the taxpayer had the premium for the prescription coverage deducted from the amount of their Social Security rather than mailing in a check for it. Those affected taxpayers will receive revised forms. Quote
MargaretMort Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 FYI, my husband and I received our Social Security statements yesterday, in FL. We do not have D so maybe that is why. Quote
Dan Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 I received my social security statement this week (Jan. 14-19). :) Quote
Janitor Bob Posted January 20, 2008 Author Report Posted January 20, 2008 I received my social security statement this week (Jan. 14-19). This client received it in the mail today.....After accusing me of losing it. She swore that she received it on Jan 2 and gave it to me.....She did not even apologize today when she called to tell me she received it. Man...some times dealing these bitter elderly clients can be tough....You cannot please them and they always think you charge too much. Quote
Mel in Hawaii Posted January 20, 2008 Report Posted January 20, 2008 How about you charge them in 1950 dollars instead and then adjust for inflation to show them what it's really worth. (just joking) Quote
JohnH Posted January 20, 2008 Report Posted January 20, 2008 Most of the time when someone complains about their fees and I actually review things, I find that I'm not charging them enough. Quote
MargaretMort Posted January 20, 2008 Report Posted January 20, 2008 Janitor Bob, don't feel bad that the client didn't apologize. Us old poops have trouble admitting that we ever made a mistake. Unfortunately, when we make them they are usually doozies. Quote
