  1. I'd heard to leave anything such as an apartment, unit, suite, bldg, whatever OFF, just the basic street address. I'll admit I went to USPS to find out how to format XX Upland Terrace which was on the return and did not work, and l found XX Upland Ter which also did not work! That's for an SS only friend. Of course, she has more SS only friends that DID get their direct deposits this week. I'm not getting work done for my real clients with all these frantic phone calls from non-clients!
  2. Pacun, she's not my client nor can she afford to pay me! You are right that the parents would lose more than the child gains. Catherine, I love taking teens to serve on Appalachia Service Project. It's an eye-opener for teens who've never been out of Fairfield County, CT.
  3. Great suggestions, Tom & Margaret. I'll pass them on to my client. Thank you both.
  4. Just received an email from a client who moved to CA in 2018. I think she forgot to tell me she changed banks (I ALWAYS ask in detail) so her IRS and CA refunds came via checks. "I got my CA check in the mail and the envelope and check were ripped. Unfortunately Bank of America won't let me deposit it this way. I've tried to contact CA FTB but haven't had any luck. Can you help me figure out how to get a new check please? Direct deposit would be even better." Being in CT, I have fewer than 10 CA clients, so seldom deal with FTB. Is there a phone number that answers now? Or, is there an online remedy for this gal and her ripped check? All suggestions gratefully welcome.
  5. Yes, and is an instructor at HRB for maybe 20 years or so. Retired U.S. Foreign Service Office.
  6. Ex-client called all in a tizzy because her daughter was yelling at her because daughter won't get $1,200 because parents claimed her. Daughter is 15 or so, earned a few bucks in the summer, and is definitely a dependent of her parents. But, all her girlfriends got $1,200 and are planning how to spend it. Daughter doesn't have $1,200 to join her girlfriends and is mad at mom. And, can I fix it? At least can I tell her how to fix it -- without charging parents, of course. Seems like the entire student body of that high school got $1,200 !!
  7. Your client can mail Form 8822 to change his address, but it will sit in a trailer of mail.
  8. Yes, the checks go to the bank; the papers go into tractor trailers to wait.
  9. I think the 7th edition is the latest. I do know Jean, so am checking with her.
  10. A great book is 1040NR? or 1040? U.S. Income Tax Returns for Visa Holders by Jean Mammen, EA. Do get the latest edition, after TCJA, maybe fourth edition or higher. I got my older edition on Amazon.
  11. As long as you checked the tax code, go for it. (I don't need to know.) Just remember worldwide income for both spouses and any foreign financial accounts.
  12. I haven't worked with a client married to a nonresident, so hopefully someone with that experience will jump in. But, I don't think your client can choose to file MFJ with a nonresident. Don't forget to ask your client if they are joint or individual signers on or owners of financial accounts in that other country.
  13. You said the spouse remained a NONresident alien?
  14. Judy says, "If the LLC is the person's name, it would be the first 4 letters of the person's first name." So, Judy says it's JOHN.
  15. If it's an individual John Brown, the control is Brow. But, if it's a company John Brown Inc, the control is JOHN So many rules!
  16. Three nights for updates and maintenance: Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights.
  17. Sounds like she gave info to the scammers! File on paper with the covering rejection notice and Form 14039 and requested attachments. Police report. Consumer Protection in her state. FTC.gov/IDtheft has some good information on all the things to do. Apply for an IP PIN. Place fraud alerts with all credit agencies. Order credit reports to report errors. Freeze all credit. SSA. www.irs.gov/identitytheft.
  18. Did she by any chance go on the Nonfilers app and file a 2019 EIP return without telling you?
  19. The short answer is you can't use the same wages or expenses for two different loan/credits/grants. As long as you have enough employees or you use 8 weeks' worth of payroll for forgiveness of one type but prior to that/after that (?) you deferred employer taxes or roll your EIDL grant into your PPP forgiveness or.... The shorter answer is that your bank will determine forgiveness based on its interpretation of the SBA regulations, so ask your bank. And, the long answer is expected in regulations due out in May.
  20. The hotel (if it were a sole proprietor, so I'm stretching) would not file a Schedule E. It would file a Schedule C because it's providing services. The hotel would not be reporting rent; it would be reporting income from services. But, I don't have any hotel clients, so I could be wrong about that.
  21. The IRS said they are getting information from the SSA for people with no filing requirement who did not file in either 2018 or 2019 but DO receive SS benefits via DD. It sounds like your mother had a filing requirement and actually filed tax returns, so the IRS is doing what they said by mailing her a check IF her 2019 return did not have a DD. The last IRS message I read, not today so it may be old news, said they were still working with the SSA to get information to upload to their app.
  22. If he filed 2019 and IF it has been processed and IF his information has been uploaded to the app and IF his EIP has not been sent yet, then the Get My Payment might work for him IF he gets in when it's not overwhelmed and IF he inputs everything the way the app is looking for it and IF.... If he didn't get a direct deposit for 2019, he can try the part of the app that lets him add his banking information, using all the preceding IFs. Or, wait for his check to arrive.
  23. If they had no tax liability and did not file 2018 or 2019 returns, they need to use the Nonfilers part of that app to file an EIP return to get in the system to be able to get an EIP. Once their EIP return is processed, then they can use the Get My Payment part of the app. Unless, they are a SS or RR or VA recipient, then they do NOT have to file an EIP return.
  24. Plus, non-qualified use will impact their 121 exclusion when they sell.
  25. You're not to use two different programs for the same expenses or for the same employees. We don't have much guidance on forgiveness yet. And, your bank might not interpret the guidance the same as my bank. Ask your bank. Tell your clients to ask their banks. I've heard it suggested to put loan proceeds into a separate account and use that account for appropriate expenses to make it easier to document come forgiveness time. So, we do have to listen to our banks now to prepare.
