At least I don't have guns. But, I wouldn't waste ammo on anyone that bugs me!

I use Michael's method. Don't risk being short on the extension, which is 2014 with all that interest accruing on any shortfall. But, I had every single client call me this year -- after explaining it in great detail in writing in an email -- asking for their ES vouchers or saying they misplaced them or even both husband and wife emailing me for 1Q amounts. I resent the email to every one of them!

Got our own extensions in for IRS, CT, and IL. Did the clients that needed calculations to mail in payments a few days ago. A few finally got me signatures today to e-file their returns. Now trying to pick up speed on extensions for those that always get refunds, their w/h is greater than their tax liability. And, some that tell me that but it doesn't always work out that way when they get me all their docs! Discovering new states as I dig into the folders or make calls. Long day. I'm so tired. Promised a biz client that I'd be at her office Thursday.

That's too bad, Rita. I was going to hire you to come put a few of my clients in their places, or your boot in their places.

The form will come out for 2015, BUT if it has a code P then it gets added to 2014 income. It's the 15th. I'd worry about it next year and charge for an amendment if necessary.

Tell it the year the Roth was opened.

HELP WITH 3115 AND RENTAL DEPRECIATION ON AMENDED RETURN PLEASE
Lion EA replied to WITAXLADY's topic in General Chat
Make sure you download her free Excel-based attachment for providing detail on each asset. Using the same format over and over does increase speed. Yep, I too have some on extension. Not big enough for cost segs. Rentals, where the adjustment is probably in the clients' favor and where the safe-harbor-type of audit protection is worth scrubbing their depreciation schedules, because these are DIY bookkeepers. -
I've also seen X in a column under a heading like "Covered," So, in that case, X is not the code but just the check mark that the stock is Covered or whatever is in the heading.

Sounds like a country western song.

No! You can NOT have your returns by 4 p.m. No! You can NOT run up here right now to sign your returns. No!

HELP WITH 3115 AND RENTAL DEPRECIATION ON AMENDED RETURN PLEASE
Lion EA replied to WITAXLADY's topic in General Chat
Oh, bummer, forgot what was way up on OP. 2011. Well, do your best. Your software can compute what depreciation should be. I do follow Lisa's booklet re filling out the form. I know that the IRS does not have time to read all the 3115s they're getting this year, so don't stress over the form. Just get it in the mail and in the return and put the 481(a) adjustment on the E under other expenses. You're just trying to get that adjustment in the amendment to improve your client's tax situation. -

I'm getting complaints and telephone calls and demands of callbacks demanding explanations from me from the clients I completed over the weekend. They're not going on extension. If they're uncomfortable filing so late, how do they think I feel with tax laws changing retroactively through 20 February and corrected brokerage statements arriving every day?! Why am I spending my Monday explaining that yes your refund is smaller because you earned $9,000 more, instead of working on the stack I still hope to finish today?! It's 2:30 p.m., and I haven't had a block of time to complete a single return today. Three more emails just popped up, but one of them is an alert that I have signed paperwork on FileShare. So, at least, I'll e-file some of these hanging. But, I have untouched returns to prepare!!! OK, I think I feel better now. Hubby just came home from the store with more Easter candy on sale; going to see if he found dark chocolate. -
I think, but don't trust that today, that you use 8878 when the client is authorizing a direct debit with their e-filed extension.
-
I also have to put everything out of sight that has to do with clients when a client arrives; only his paperwork on my desk. That's one reason why I've been sending hubby out to make deliveries and get signatures, so I don't have to clean my office! And, getting more clients to use FileShare on my website.

Some free downloads and the best $20 you'll spend this year is Lisa Ihm's Booklet on filling out Form 3115 with examples and an Excel template to use for your attachments: http://brasstax.com/3115%20Booklet.htm It's all available for instant download on her site above. -

Converted to personal use (and then gifted personally)? -
Why not, Terry? After using $9,300 of tuition to keep the 1099-Q non taxable, don't they still have nearly $26,000 tuition left for an Education Credit? (Although, if they can afford over $35,000 in tuition, their income may be too high to qualify for credits. But, maybe they use loans to pay the tuition.)

I want every one of those!

It's always signatures and payment before e-filing. I do take all major credit cards and have a PayPal link on my website. But, with my long-time clientele, I do make exceptions on payment when asked nicely. Sometimes I'm too busy to get their CC info over the phone before mailing out their folder to a distant city, state, or country, so include their invoice in their mailing; I always get a check back in the mail or a contact with their CC info. Once in a great while someone will ask me to wait to charge their card or deposit their check; those have always worked out fine. Many of my clients came from HRB where I worked, so were used to paying at pick-up. The only time I got stung for much, I didn't think I was going to complete the second year before I met the guy to deliver the first year; he'd brought a check for only half the first year. He was paying me monthly for many months, but stopped; he's no longer a client. I have a couple of small ones now; one thought Daddy paid, but Daddy stopped being my client this year. So, I have these two to re-invoice in a week or two, but each are around $100 only.

My bedtime has gotten up to 6 a.m. I try to sleep at least four hours/night, well hours/day, because I use a CPAP machine and Medicare won't pay for it unless I'm 97% compliant. But, I'm slowing down and having to do things twice. Hubby's gone for the evening, so it's quiet. The reason I'm working all night and then sleeping in the morning is that I do get more done without the phone ringing and without retired hubby walking into my office. I have a guest room, Judy. But, I'll be almost as happy with you on here researching these odd ones that are our latecomers, or the ones we left for last since we really didn't like the looks of them. Thank you, Judy, for all you do. And, a huge THANK YOU to all who jump in with help, answers, cites, encouragement, short-cuts, laughs, and all the things that make up my favorite virtual water cooler.

Yep, the kid that moved out of his parent's CT house into NY in 2013, then moved to NJ during 2014. Still hasn't emailed me back to tell me how the dates of residency break out and if his work locations changed. And, his brother changed colleges into RI and worked a tiny bit while there. And, a partnership included their personal returns this year "because we don't have time to do them on TT this year." And, the new guy has a NJ S-corp with one pay stub but no W-2 or K-1. And, another client works in her father's church and has only a pay stub. And, there was a schema error in another kid's OH return for his tiny job while at college. These Fairfield County kids are so rich that they don't have to work, so why do they work while out of state at college?! Some of them have more state returns than their commuter parents. And the man who promised me his trust had been dissolved; well, it still has one brokerage account and needs me to prep the 1041 before I can prep his 1040. And, the couple that absolutely must file on time due to an IA (I know, but I can't convince her otherwise; they have good w/h). And, the guy who gave me his stuff, and I find it includes a trust due to his wife's death. And, spring break is next week, so the calls started coming in Friday that people are leaving for vacation and wanted to pick up their returns today. I am so tired. Hubby went up to the Hartford area to visit with his daughter, go out to dinner, attend her concert. I really wish I could go, but even if I had I would fallen asleep listening to music. This is the first year that I haven't been counting, because the stack is so visually imposing that I don't want to know. Now to calculate some extension payments....

I love ASP's CEO Walter Crouch, headquartered in Johnson City, TN. He attended one of our orientations in Ridgefield, CT, on Thursday. Although, he's not the minister that writes their devotionals. And, then there's you; I love you. And, some of our southern gentlemen posters must be from TN, right? I might check with you when we get our assignments; you can see if we're repairing homes for any of your clients (well, no, because we use code names only and you can't disclose clients; but I can tell you what counties we will be working in by our June orientation and meetings.)
