  1. https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4361.pdf As you said, once the exemption is approved, you cannot revoke it. The exemption covers payments for ministerial duties. If he paints houses on the side, he should have FICA withheld. If he expects a non-ministerial SE tax obligation, he could increase his FIT withholding to have enough in his "bucket" to cover SE as well as FIT or make SE payments. If he's a minister in a national or large denomination, he can probably get counsel from his superiors or a legal or finance department. Read Pub. 517 for more information.
  2. You have one. Except, you won't get paid !!
  3. I seldom answer my house phone when in my home office. And, unless I'm waiting for a client's call, I'm letting my work phone go to voicemail more and more. If I recognize the caller ID or # and am not in the middle of something, I pick up. Otherwise, I'll listen to messages as soon as I reach a stopping point and make return calls to clients, but not to salespeople. Clients get a call back soon, or as my outgoing message says, "by the next business day." I've set the ringer to ring only twice. I have received calls from ME from MY NUMBER to my number and from the "IRS," so I know they can spoof anything. Emails are less intrusive. I try to answer those as fast as possible to encourage emails. Besides, I prefer hard/electronic copies of most client responses.
  4. I set the phone down on my desk, but not on speaker. When I hear them say Press 1 for..., I press and let phone stay on my desk. Eventually it squawks at me that the human hung up. I kept that line from calling someone else for a few minutes. It doesn't bother me much, not being on speaker. I irritate a human. And, I think that some of those irritated humans actually drop my number from the lists. Sometimes.
  5. I like my local NY/CT-ATP for networking in my area and the CCH User Conference to meet staff (a biz card with a direct line to a tech support manager is my treasure); both give outstanding courses with nationally-known instructors. But, I don't learn much from preparers out of my area, too many geographical differences. When I find a single topic I like/need, I try to get it as a webinar so as not to waste time traveling for only 1-2 CEs. I read everything I can (all those journals that come with my memberships), take webinars/archived webinars, and local and CCH live courses, a little bit of everything, depending on my needs each year. For example, this year with hip replacement approaching, I'm not traveling to seminars, just the local ones and online.
  6. How about CCH? Upcoming Webinars from Wolters Kluwer Wolters Kluwer and NAEA have joined together to provide exclusive offers to Wolters Kluwer's CCH CPELink platform. Hundreds of courses over a broad range of topics make it easy to find CPE relevant to your professional development, while the Compliance Manager makes it easy to actively monitor your CPE deadlines and mandatory subject requirements so you don't have to. Consider these upcoming webinars: Title Date CE Taxation of Employee Stock & Stock Options Wednesday, September 5, 2018 2 How Innocent Does the Innocent Spouse Have to Be Thursday, September 6, 2018 2 When Your Client Dies: Final Form 1040, Post-Death Elections and More Tuesday, September 11, 2018 2 Form 990: Functional Expense Reporting and Grantmaking Wednesday, September 19, 2018 2 Tax Treatment of Individual Retirement Arrangements Wednesday, September 19, 2018 2 Family Trusts: Planning to Preserve, Protect and Transfer Wealth for Your Clients Thursday, September 20, 2018 2

  9. Just attended a performance where the handicapped bathroom was separate. I'm using a cane now (hip replacement scheduled for November). Women were going in Women or Handicapped in order. But, I waved my cane and cut the line in front of healthy women to go into Handicapped. Not sure if I can cut the line to a handicapped stall in an otherwise combined women's restroom with one long line out the door. But, I guess I'll find out soon. Last summer on our way home from ASP, the men's room emptied out so we women started using it with one woman stationed outside in case nonASP civilian men came by. But, the ladies' room thinned out, our "guard" went in, and I exited the men's room to a large group of boys looking very confused !!
  10. In a live course, the line for the women's room during a break is around the block!
  11. My computer is hardwired, not wifi, so when I send/receive faxes/email they are safer than wifi, just like using my free-standing fax/all-in-one machine that's hardwired. But, nothing is totally safe. I usually use FileShare and encourage my clients to use it also, because it's hosted by CCH, the same that e-files their tax returns. Again, nothing is totally safe, but FileShare makes my clients and me feel more comfortable.
  12. I've used eFax since I went out on my own. They have a free service, but I upgraded so I could choose my own number. I pay annually to get a break in price. Faxes go to my email of choice, are stored electronically on their server and my desktop, and can be viewed/sent from any computer with an internet connection. I had one minor problem, but they talked me through it quickly. eFax.com
  13. I like HP printers and do have an HP all-on-one when I need a flat-bed. But, I use Fujitsu scanners.

ProSystem fx is not cloud-based like Axcess, but can be hosted in the cloud, on your network, on a stand-alone computer, etc. CCH's small firm group does work with you to get pricing to fit your needs. I have much as pay-per-return to keep costs down. Put your CCH rep to work to get you the best price for your practice. I didn't like Lacerte as well as UltraTax and ProSystem fx for my practice. Both Lacerte and UltraTax end up more expensive, anyway. (I still compare prices every other year or so.) And, I preferred the tech support at ProSystem fx. I was concerned about multi-state returns and things like kiddie tax in large families. I have few international issues, so YMMV. The ease of flow of Axcess with it's portal could be perfect for your worldwide clients.

  17. Congratulations! Keep visiting us -- to help or to laugh at/with us or to reconfirm your decision to retire or all of those! Godspeed.
  18. One of my MA clients just became a PY MA and PY CA client. I (yes ME) will also need chill pills to get through the tax season!
  19. Yes, the SALT gets added back to compute AMT on 6251. But, then the AMT gets compared to regular tax, and only the highest results. For instance, my typical clients with about $50,000 in SALT that would save them about $16,500 at their regular tax rate of 33%, have about $9,500 in AMT added to their 1040 due to the AMT top rate of 28%. Even with AMT, they have a tax savings of $7,000 due to SALT -- in 2017. I'm in CT with many NY clients and a few MA and PA and CA and IL and.... 2018 is not going to be pretty.
  20. Passthrough entities, such as partnerships and S-corporations, that pay the tax on the passthrough income. Supposedly to help even the playing field with the new, lower 21% top C-corporation tax rate.
  21. NY did that a few years ago, so CT had to follow the next year.
  22. It was fillable in my Chrome.

    Docu Sign

I think the CCH is per form and not per person's signature, but again, I haven't used it yet. I have it because I know I'll need it at some point. When I complete a return, I have check boxes to send it to eSign, to the portal, to print, etc., for the client's copy.
