  5. TP refinanced personal residence in 2013. Origination charge (points) is shown on page 2 of HUD-1. As I understand it normally this amount would be amortized over the life of the loan, BUT what happens when the amount is negative. It seems the lender gives a credit against the charge based upon the actual interest rate selected by the TP. So I have a negative amount showing as origination charges - does it get offset against interest expense fully in 2013 - or should you (could you) amortize over loan life and reduce interest expense each year by a portion? I have verified that this amount is not included in the amount on the 1098. Thanks for your help.
  6. From 4797 Instructions: "If you disposed of both depreciable property and other property (for example, a building and land) in the same transaction and realized a gain, you must allocate the amount realized between the two types of property based on their respective fair market values (FMVs) to figure the part of the gain to be recaptured as ordinary income because of depreciation. The disposition of each type of property is reported separately in the appropriate part of Form 4797(for example, for property held more than 1 year, report the sale of a building in Part III and land in Part I)."

  10. For those using Parker Tax Publishing - what are you using for the State returns you are preparing. I know the TaxBook's WebLibrary gives the user access to an all-states edition which includes answers to the state's unique income tax rules. Thanks for your feedback
  11. Only 1 or 2 crashes entire season - stand a lone system - small practice - crashes occurred when changing printing options - otherwise not that bad. Hoping they get it all ironed out - love the product and price point.
  12. Employer and payroll company messed up young man's W-2 in 2011; IRS is holding refund pending getting it corrected. In the meantime, the young man has become my client, gets married and wants to file a joint return for 2012. Clients are owed a refund for 2012 - will IRS intercept it or can they not touch it because of the joint nature? Any insight on where to look would be helpful - thanks.

  18. Interested in finding out which scanners work best with PaperlessPlus. Also, your thoughts on the PaperlessPlus product - thanks.
  19. I had this problem as well. First I must say I print one client at a time, so the solution I stumbled upon may not be a fix for everyone. Under the options tab, in the return manager, click on preferences - then the print tab to the left - uncheck the box next to "Print return in one print job" This worked for me, but like I said, I only print one client at a time - hope this helps.
  20. What scanner are you guys using with PaperlessPlus?

    Severance Pay

Thanks Taxbilly - I've been talking to the client and they will be bringing more information to me, but it sounds like this situation is almost identical to the article - again thanks
  22. Client gives me a 2009 1099-MISC with an amount in box 7 and I asked what is this for - he told me it was for severance pay. In addition, he had a W-2 from the same company. I have never run into severance pay on a 1099 - is this correct and if yes is it subject to SE tax?
  23. see IRS website link and publication 1635: IRS Link
  24. Are you a member of the local chamber of commerce or any civic groups - most small business owners, in my area, are members of the Chamber and at least one civic club. Also you could meet with the local banks so that they get to know you better. Hope this helps.
