OK - -after just finishing a rather large & time-consuming project last week, I am wondering - - -just how many other tax preparers have sewing or woodworking as their off season hobby. I belong to a sewing guild, and it appears that about 20% are in the bookkeeping/accounting/tax prep business - - -must be that right/side or left/side brain thing - - -very interesting. As my annual "NON-court mandated community service" this year, we (family & I) re-upholstered 12 altar chairs, 5 kneelers, 7 ft Cedelia cushion, 16 kneeler pads, and re-worked a 90 yr old original to the Basilica gold embroidered altar cloth. Yeah - -last week - -good thing I am semi-retired!!!! This is all for tomorrow's celebration of a local priest Fr. Baker who just moved up to Venerable on the sainthood-food chain. Celebration is at Our Lady of Victory Basilica - -which if you are ever int eh Buffalo/Lackawanna vicinity - -I highly suggest - -stop in & see one of the most beautiful churches in America - -very European style - - olv.org

Client transferred Coverdell dollars from first child to second (the one that is still in school) and received a 1099Q with gross distribution in box 1 - -but NOTHING in Box 2 Earnings. I know that this is not a taxable event, but how does it get reported on the 1040? Thank You!

Client had a $1500 Energy credit in 2009. Can he get an ADDITIONAL energy credit for 2010?
-
To "Hold" or "Not to Hold" -- That is the question!
Terry O replied to Yardley CPA's topic in General Chat
Even though HOLD is a 4-letter word (as is cook, bake, iron & snow) I hold ALL state returns - -as mentioned above - -it has saved 2 amended so for for me this year. -

Every time I check for acknowledgments or transmit a return - - I get he following ERROR: Failed to connect to an EFC server I have a FIOS connection - -and am able to update the program - -nothing changed -and I have no idea how to correct it. Had anyone else had this happen today??

OK - -found it - -I think. The expenses that the HSA were used for go on line 15. Which makes sense, since it was ALL used for Dr., deductibles & co pays. Thank you All!
-
Client's W-2 shows 1725 in pre tax contributions to HSA - - -then she added an additional $3000 after tax contribution in 2010 due to medical expenses. Received a 1099-SA for gross distribution of $4085- - -Distribution code #1 - -and HSA Code for Box 5. WHY is this taxable income to her? If so - -is there a way to deduct the FULL amount - -not just medical deductions subject to 7% income? Thanks!

Back in the day - - -remember when people HAD to be married to get a mortgage - -I know I am showing my age - - - but seriously - -he IS on the title, as is she.
-
Client comes in with girlfriend - -they bought a house together - -one mortgage statement with HER name & SS# on it. If they split the deduction - -neither itemizes since they bought the house later half of the year. However, he earns a LOT more than she does - is there a way that they can split it? Hopefully - -they will get married & this will not be an issue next year.
