When AI gets that smart, AI can do the whole tax return and we can find something more fun to do.

Taxpayer is 68 years old PA resident. Has a 1099R with code 7D. The 1099R shows this as a PA distribution. But is it taxed in PA? The D part is throwing me. - "Annuity payments from nonqualified annuities that may be subject to tax under section 1411." I know PA generally doesn't tax retirement pays.

No - if it's in the system, don't send another. Do you have POA?- maybe you can try to call about it in your spare time and see where it stands.

ummmmmmm- I must say I would like to have gotten a stipend in college for 30K to do research.....but...... I was going to put this as other income and be done with it. But then the father sends me all this information about her travel and expenses doing this research. The thought that it is SE income had not crossed my mind. Do you guys consider this SE income? Honestly - it's a lot less costly to her to just have ordinary income. And I have had other students who have gotten stipends to work for a college that I have just called it other income. Much thanks for your guys' 2 cents on this. (They don't make the cent sign on the keyboard anymore do they. Wait. Did they used to?)

Medicaid is a college class of it's own. Sometimes family members can receive money tax free as a care-giver, but be careful how that contract is written. The money has already been paid with little forethought so - hey - let us know. I'm at that wonderful stage right now where my mother with dementia has given away loads of money that Medicaid is not happy about it. But I don't think Joel Olsteen is going to be writing a check back to the nursing home now. I'm a little late getting the power of attorney that I needed months ago, partly my own fault because I was not realizing how wacky she had gotten. Not exactly close to her, and certainly not happy trying to figure out what she's done with all her money.

Having everything in someone's cloud makes me nervous. I still want a little hard piece of plastic and metal to back up on. Need to find out how much access google has to your info. My google knows when I sneeze. What will my google cloud know?

wife died in 21, but husband brings 1099-Int

Thanks guys - we shall report and pay. It was about 7500 in interest so it certainly creates a bit of tax, but the TP has certainly taken benefit. -
1099C but person claims it was all paid
schirallicpa replied to schirallicpa's topic in General Chat
he paid the company but the company did not apply money to the cc -
These debt relief programs are BS and we all know it. But it's always an older person that gets scammed into them. This guy paid payments thru some program, and has proof of the payments that was supposed to pay off a credit card. But now - 2 years later - he gets a 1099C because the debt was discharged and his payments apparently didn't go to the CC company and the debt relief company cannot be found. What to do. Seems hugely unfair that he should have to pay tax on this. But until this came in the mail last week, he didn't know he had been scammed. I'm not sure if the IRS gives any room on this kind of stuff.

The wife died 3 years ago, but the husband came in this year and has a 1099-int from an account that was in her name. Does he need to claim it?

Married but living in separate states part year
schirallicpa replied to Margaret CPA in OH's topic in General Chat
Oh no - seems these preacher people are giving us all headaches this year. But on the bright side - it's ash Wednesday and the fish fry specials will begin Friday! -
I had ordered something from a vendor in Fl and he was calling me to confirm the order and called our home phone instead of the office phone. My daughter was about 12 then and answered the phone with "City morgue -you kill them, we chill them. " So he hung up assuming he had a wrong number. When he called back she said "City morgue - you stab em, we slab 'em." But this time he told her he was looking for me. She gave him the office number, and he was laughing when he told me the story. She felt bad. No harm done.

My daughter worked for me a couple of years ago. We always end phone calls with Love You, Bye. And she caught herself saying that more than once. On another note, my other daughter was helping in the office. My name is Elizabeth but I've always been called Beth. I hear her repeating on the phone "Beth. You know, like meth but with a B"

Trying to avoid the extra penalty- first time home buyer. The land is where they will build their house. Stretching a little?

I had done a couple of years of tax returns a few years ago that the woman used the physical address and the man used his mothers address. When I realized that they were living together I fired them. Also remember EIC rules if applicable. I am an advocate of every taxpayer filing individually and get rid of all the credits. Just tax me for my income. Done.

Does anyone use ATX payroll and file 941s?
schirallicpa replied to schirallicpa's topic in General Chat
aahhhhhhh Thank you! -
I needed to file late 941 returns (for my sister-in-law. ) So I was able to file the 4th quarter in the new software. And I had to go back to last years software to create the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. And I got the 1st successfully efiled. But how do I do the next 2? Can't file another one because it's in accepted status. Can't duplicate it and file - gave me an error. I'm confused.

Can Ministers Income be reported on W2 without filing Forms 941?
schirallicpa replied to gfizer's topic in General Chat
Funny - scroll back a few days ago I had a minister pay headache myself. In my case we had always filed 1099 and come to find out the treasurer was filing 941. I created a W2 and will not continue with this particular client in the future. -
Filed the W2 - which - back to another post about ID.me I can't seem to log into SS this year so I mailed in the W2 and W3. And I asked the client to not ask me to prepare this next year:) Like I said- This gave me a headache! Let alone - last minute!!

Lets not read into this more than it is - he's doing weddings and funerals stuff like that. This is not an argument about whether he is independent or not. My issue is the fact that the treasurer has been filing these no-tax 941s for it for a few years and noting that there had not been any inquiry regarding it from IRS or NYS. I would normally just file another 1099 for him, but now I have this HSA report showing a whole $36 that prompted the treasurer to ask me about it.
