I was also wondering what that was. Thank you. Although I like the second answer the best.

Sounds like income to me. The obvious question is, why was debt forgiven if she can make payments? Mute point, probably.

My backup file is vacant. I have not backed up to external drive since Feb 16, which is not the end of the world, but you know how many returns you go thru daily. You are right. backups should be everyday. And Sunday afternoon I sat here thinking i needed to do one, and then got busy working and forgot. Monday was doomsday. Now I'm re-doing a weeks worth of work. As if I weren't already a week behind to begin with Lesson learned!

Where oh where did it go? I had lost the whole program last night. Now I cannot find my database. Was too dumb to do a full back up a couple days ago when i should have.

My program froze today, and now cannot open
schirallicpa replied to schirallicpa's topic in General Chat
will give it a try Was wondering if I needed to try to re-install/update windows. -
I have been doing “ok” with the software. No major issues. Each time I was booted out, I was able to get back in. But today my whole computer froze in the middle of me selecting print options in a corp return. Used task manager to stop program. Could not re-open program after that. Tried to repair from disk. Rebooted computer. Nothing. Tried to download updates from websites. Rebooted computer. Nothing. Tried to set my computer back to this morning when program was working fine. Rebooted. Nothing. Tried to uninstall and reinstall from disk. Rebooted computer. Nothing. Tried to uninstall and reinstall from website. Rebooted computer. Nothing. Tried to download updates again. Rebooted computer. Nothing. Error says windows stopped working. The program just won’t get anywhere. Stays on blue window and then says windows stopped and closes. Earlier noted 2 errors and a message: Error 1706 Error 1603 Cannot find “atx2012.msi” I see the installation process “extracting” msi files. Not sure what any of that means. Using Windows 7.

How can SS withhold from the son's benefits? It's not his responsibility to repay his mom's overpymt? Make SS correct.

That's my little buddy in my picture. He comes to work with me every day and is laying on my desk right now - on someone's papers. He peed on a couple of w-2s when he was little, and peed on a couple clients too. But now he's better at letting me know we have to go for a walk. Which gives me an excuse to get out of the office every few hours. I'm spoiled. Not too many people can bring their dog to work with them.

After you breeze thru the very simple PA return, you will wish we all lived in PA. Usually they withhold exactly what they tax. If he's a simple w-2 then you will probably have a zero return. The ATX program may open up extra credit forms, but he won't be eligible. Not sure about your state, but many states give you a credit for taxes paid in another state, so look for that. I live in NY near the PA border, and have quite a few clients working in PA. NY gives a credit for the tax paid to PA. If there is local tax withheld, PA no longer requires that the local returns be filed if they are withholding exactly what the tax is - which they are.

I have a local banker that always tells his customers that social security is never taxed. Then when they withdraw extra IRA money, and their taxes go thru the roof, guess who gets the grief..........

I've been overwriting the bottom line on the input page of Sch E and deleting the 8582 - on returns that are not complex and wouldin't really need one any way even though the program insists it be there.
-
Well - I just talked to him and he informed me they were never married. So, that gives me a new twist.

I'm just grumbling about it too. Seems cumbersome. The mileage worksheet is slow acting, and to click between assets makes the program skip around. Also, I don't like getting efile error for unassigned assets. I don't always want to get rid of assets and like to keep the record of them on the computer.

FeeCollect: How many use it and what are your feelings?
schirallicpa replied to gfizer's topic in General Chat
Been using it for a while. Kind of a pain, because you need extra info and have to fill in extra dates, etc on the fee-collect form. I charge $25 more to use this service figuring they take $15, and my extra time is also worth something. Be careful of people who owe money to the IRS, that they haven't quite told you about. The IRS will hold the refund, and you will be chasing the client afterall. This happened to me when a client who's corporate tax return had delinquent taxes and the IRS took their personal refund. I wasn't doing the corp return and was not aware of the problems. Also be careful that your bill doesn't change on you - especially this year with the new ATX. -
My client divorced "lisa" a number of years ago. He had purchased a house that they lived in. According to their divorce agreement, she was to pay him $40,000. She never paid him. He got a lawyer. Now - maybe 5 years later, an agreement has been reached for her to pay $15000 over time. I believe that this is completely outside of the tax return. However, can he deduct his (outrageous) attorney fees on schedule A subject to 2%

Hmmmm- i am thinking the w-2 is wrong. The housing allowance was supposed to be out of that gross w-2 amt.
-
First I'm having a hard time making my W2 clergy work. They report roughly $50K on W2 by $30K of that is housing allowance. On line 7 shows up as $20 like it is supposed to . (marked clergy on w2 input. used box 14 to indicate housing.) But, error report says matching error on w2 detail vs. line 7. Regardless - i am getting EIC. I am thinking that the $30K of housing allowance should not be excludable from income for EIC, Doesn't seem kosher. But EIC worksheets just refer back to sch C. Has anyone dealt with this. Appreciate it.

I can't rollover any one that has any meat to their return. I can rollover simple W2 clients, which I have about 10 of. Not exactly paying for the software yet, but keeping the lights on. I never thought that by this date we would still be dealing with such mickey mouse problems as rolling over a return. this is very frustrating.

Slow Printing -- ATX needs information see post
schirallicpa replied to taxtrio's topic in General Chat
As if I don't have enough printing problems, I bought Staples multi-purpose paper and my printer does not like it:( -
Everytime I try - boom - we're shutting down. This has been very very frustrating so far.

how 'bout a payroll reporting question re: union pension contr
schirallicpa replied to schirallicpa's topic in General Chat
ok- that's what I was thinking. So good. thank you. -
I do not prepare too much payroll. Beyond the very basics, I'm at a loss. But a client asked me this this morning. He hires union guys and makes contributions to their pension. Other than checking the box "retirement plan" does he have any further reporting on the pension contributions as far as the w-2? thanks.

Yes sometimes people are a little rough on each other on this forum. I've been beat up before myself. Hey - sticks and stones. But I don't think this guy said anything rude to begin with. And haven't we all been on here complaining about ATX this season. Spell checker? Use of English? Reallly? Seriously?
