  1. Client is asking if I can stop the payments that we set up to automatically debit from her account. Fed and NYS. Haven't had this situation before. Other than telling her not to have funds available, is there any suggestion on how to stop the payments? Amended return for the change in payments?
  2. Client owns real property in NYS and has received a contract to receive $1000 each year for 3 years for an easement. And this year at the initial contract, they gave him a bonus of $2500 for signing early. And then they gave him TP-584 to pay the RETT. Now - I have never looked at one of these before, but aren't they for actual transfer of property? He's basically renting to them a pathway thru his property. And do you show all 3 years of payment on the form? Or just the initial year? How will NYS collect for years 2 and 3? Feel like telling him to ignore it. Does an easement rental like this even get recorded in the property tax offices? How does NYS know this transaction exists? I guess real estate attorney goes on my resume now too.
  3. I have someone inquiring about NYS sales tax back tax issues. I honestly hate dealing with NYS. But wondered if anyone on here had experience with this. I advertise that I deal with IRS issues, and NYS income tax issues, so I received this inquiry. He's got 24K in back tax and penalties after letting someone else run a business under his ID. (Yeah - that's a red flag right there.)
  4. Thank you, guys, for confirming for me.
  5. How many phone calls have you received from bankers that see the PPP loan in the M1 and don't understand why it's reported there?
  6. Found it - but my computer didn't like it and would not open it.
  7. Married couple. Wife inherits land in 1987. We're in NY. Land is recorded in both H & W names. Wife died in 2014. Now the man is selling (to Dollar General, BTW). So I'm scrapping thru old tax files trying to see what land may have sold for in 1987 in order to figure basis. So then does he get her half stepped up to 2014 values? while he keeps his half at 1987 value? He can't possibly get all of it stepped up. But I think he gets her half. However - since it was HER inheritance, does it get all stepped up? (Round and round in circles I go.) After all, it was hers...... I've done tax work for 22+ years and I guess I had never come across this specific situation, and it's making my brain hurt today.
  8. I have a client from PA with NYS income who moved to OH. So 3 states. But when I try to include the letter for OH (and we need OH estimates) - no letter shows as available. So then I wonder - have I capped out on letters. How do I get the OH letter in there.
  9. I have recently had a girl apply that had education as a bio-chemist and grew up in China and can speak Mandrian. (not sure if I'm spelling that right.) Really? Do you think you are going to stick around for tax season? .....no........................
  10. I have all my tax returns from when I first got married. I was always going to put the AGIs and tax liab on a spreadsheet -oops -the accounting nerd in me is showing.
  11. Years ago - the very first year I was efiling tax returns - one of my clients returned an error that said he was dead. We paper filed the return. the next year he was alive again. It was a strange fluke. Didn't think much of it then.
  12. Basically - I just need to do everything myself, and then my old system of writing down the name when they come in works best:) I have never utilized the client # or job status within ATX return manager, other than to indicate it's an estimate or paper file, or something like that. I will sort on that column and any one that doesn't have an efile status should have a memo in the client # column. But maybe I can work something out like Abby Normal. hmmm. Thanks guys for the input.
  13. So yesterday I was just going bonkers but I have 1 file in particular that I cannot create an efile for. I tried to recreate from the rejection on the efile tab. I got the error. I tried to delete the efile and create the efile from within the tax return like normal. Nope - same error. So the Federal return is efiled no problem. This is the NYS return I'm having problems with.
  14. Used to - in the old days when I had a very attentive and organized office assistant - we would just write down each name as it came in/dropped off. And I would occasionally look at the book and say "crap (or something to that affect) I forgot about that guy - I better get him done/extended". We would go back on that same paper and mark when it was done. And then mark when it was picked up. Too cumbersome for the current feeble-minded staff. And as a result, one client was not put on extension, and one person's stuff never got off the front desk. Not end-of-world stuff here, but definitely client-losing stuff. So I'm trying to consider another method.
  15. Taxpayer was 52% shareholder of a business who's assets were sold in 2021 and the final money will come thru in 2022. But he's still the owner (him and his sister) because NYS is sooooo sssslllloooooowwwwwww in transfering licensing (for a nursing home). So - can he still contribute to a SEP in 2022? The assets and operations are under a new company currently acting under the old company that is waiting for NYS. So technically, his company is still just holding a license and getting paid a monthly fee. If the license transfer come thru in 2022, does the SEP still fly as long as he makes it before the final transaction?
  16. "The program has encountered an unexpected error and needs to close" If I hit "more info" I get all this that I don't understand. I have rebooted twice this morning and have not printed a thing. (I always thought this message was after I printed a lot.) Error: Value cannot be null. 17. Has anyone else worked thru this credit. I have a small client that may be eligible. But 2 initial questions: They are a cash basis taxpayer. I assume the amount included in his Schedule C cannot be included in the 6765 amounts - or we would be double dipping.(?) He missed the filing deadline and is filing late. I know he cannot take credit on payroll related expense, but can he still take credit on other expense incurred. Or is this credit lost with missing deadlines?
  18. Sometimes I think I post on here just to bring stuff to my own attention.
  19. ah-ha! Input error. My bad.....
  20. The owner was a Fl resident and the estate is established in Fl. However, the personal rep is from NYS and the estate address is his address in NY. I am getting an error on the efile attempt that the shareholder's (estate) zip code (NY) doesn't correspond with the shareholder's (estate's ) residency code (Fl). How do I get around this? This is not a logical error - many times reps are residing in different states.
  21. The corp - as it turns out - (a few posts ago I was trying to figure out what to do with the corp that kept operating after the sole owner died.....) continued operations until Feb 2022. I'm going to be stuck paper filing for short year Jan 1 2022 - Feb 28, 2022, aren't I? And - I'm past due. Ugh.
  22. I too have had ATX for 20 some years. I actually tried out Drake and didn't like it. ATX is a good software for a small business. I like that I input from a screen that looks like the form. But I started out old school filing in the blanks on a tax return by pencil. So I feel comfortable using the forms and not relying on input prompts. I haven't had any complaints (since that little issue in 2012.....) (2012?) (The older users will know.....)
