Tom, I found this for instruction on the 2013 program, checked it out on mine but everything on mine is showing as running. Maybe it will give you a starting point. To reconnect the server from inside ATX: From the Support menu in any main manager, select About ATX. When the About ATX dialog box appears, click the Admin Console link at the bottom of the box. On the Server Settings tab, under the Status column, right-click in the row for the server you want to start/stop. Click Start to restart the server. Click Close. Restart ATX. Opening the Admin Console from outside the application The Admin Console is actually a separate executable from the ATX product. Consequently, you can open it when ATX is closed. To open the Admin Console when ATX is closed, follow this path:

Anyone who had previously registered with FTB needs to re-register starting today to be able to access client's info. It's a pretty easy process but the old log in will no longer work. They have completely redone everything and actually give us access to more info once registered and have a POA on file for a client. Deb!

That's why I feel at home here! I'm a one person office and try hard to keep up on things but ever so often miss what should be obvious. Ironically I have a great insurance agent and we talk through out the year when we have questions about the ACA. Best advice he gave me was when I was thinking of going through the exchange for my insurance. I have a grandfathered plan and the cost through the exchange with the subsidy would be about the same in monthly premiums but coverage looked a little better so I thought. He told me keep my old policy as long as it's available. Not many doctors in my area are provers. Sure enough last year I maxed out my deductible and was told by my doctors that had I had Covered California they would not have taken my insurance. Same thing again this year (summers are beginning to suck for me). So when it comes to questions on taxes I have everyone here and insurance I have Larry who is serious about his job! Thanks again for your help and encouragement! -

I did make a mistake in the numbers I gave. Everything is correct except the IRA it was for 13,000.00 not 15,000. ATX did not populate the modified AGI we had to make an entry and I think where I messed up was adding back the non taxable part of the social security. Re-reading the instructions seems to indicate that we do not take the non taxable part of social security into consideration in figuring the shared responsibility payment, it is however factored in when calculating the credit for those who bought thru the exchange and ATX does handle that on it's own. I feel so dumb!!!! I read and re-read so much of this and somehow I still got it wrong. Oh well my client will be happy that she has some money coming back! -
I have a client, (husband and wife filing jointly) who just received a letter indicating that there may be a mistake in the way I calculated the shared responsibility payment on their return. It doesn't give specifics but does indicate that a possible waiver could be taken or that a miscalculation occurred in figuring their penalty. The husband was fully covered thru m\Medicare, the wife was not and had no insurance thru out the year. The both are under 60 years old (husband is disabled and receiving social security and Medicare) There only income is as follows: IRA Distribution: $15,000, Rental Income: $7,435, Social Security $26,411 of which only $821 is taxable. Thus there adjusted gross income is $21,256. Because the income is $21,256 there is a need to file (so no waiver here). When I calculate the penalty I have to use modified AGI so I include all of the social security which makes there modified AGI $48,846 and the shared responsibility payment should be $265. Can someone please explain to me what I did wrong, or what I am not seeing here? I sincerely appreciate it. Deb!

Yes, But they do shut down for a time and then restart early in January. When they are back up and running we can process 13-15 tax years.

Only one of them has to qualify. As long as one us under 65 they do qualify.

I have a client who purchased a five acre parcel that has a home on it. According to the property bill the land is far more valuable than the home is. My client is renting out the home at fair market value, but has put a shop on the property (not currently using it for anything) and has intentions of farming (organically) the acreage. Currently because of the CA water crises the farm is sort of on hold. He is tilling the land, but not planting anything because of lack of water. The renters do have a few animals (he says they are Llamas) and they use some of the land. How much of the mortgage interest would you deduct as rental expense? Would you divide it between the house and the property? Would you then deduct the portion attributed to the rental on schedule E and the remainder on A? I don't believe schedule F would be used at this point as there is no income being generated and probably won't be for the next year or two. Any thoughts?

Dependent social security number used on another return
Tax Prep by Deb replied to Tax Prep by Deb's topic in General Chat
That is exactly what I would do if it was the parents number used but I can't find anything for just the dependents. If you look at that form it's for the taxpayer or a deceased taxpayer, nothing mentioning the dependent. -
Besides paper filing the return, is there anything else that should be done when a return is rejected because a dependents social security number has already been used on another persons return? My clients adopted this little girl 3 years ago. Her social security number was the same that was originally issued, but did undergo a name change. No one has bothered this until now. First time rejected but third year filed. I know if it was the mom and dad's number already used we could do the fraud stuff, but what protection does the dependent have? Mom and dad are filing jointly and the little girl is only 4 so she didn't file a tax return herself. Any suggestions?

I actually grew up with nothing but Australian Shepherds. They are about the smartest dog I have ever seen. As puppies they are adorable as the video shows. Thanks for sharing.

I had a request one time and after the three year time frame. I was told by the IRS agent that they realized it was outside the required time frame but they hoped I still had it.

Gail said it better than I could have. I had a client this year who had to pay back the entire subsidy because she finally after three years won her social security disability fight and was awarded a lump sum. This plus what her husband had to take out of his 401K to survive (was let go from his job) put them over the edge. The 401k by itself would not have, neither would just the current years social security, but the lump sum including the previous two years did.

With that much money, I do not see hardship at all.

I just recently had one of my client's who never owes nor never gets back, call me to ask what he should do as his bank, also Bank of America deposited someone's federal and California tax refunds into his account. He called the bank and they told him it was IRS and Franchise Tax Boards problem, however I had been down this road before and the instructions given us from IRS at that time was to go to the bank and refuse the deposit. When my client did this the bank had to send the deposits back to the agencies. I told my client to call them back and tell them that and they said they would take care of it. It's kind of freaky that your client's refund was deposited into someone else's account at Bank of American and my client received someone else's refunds, also Bank of America, and apparently during the same week. I wonder if these two might be connected? Was your state refund California?

How much are they charging for Max to efile w2 andm1099? -
If business loss is equal to or more than W2 earnings, no EIC because earned income is 0 or less.

I have an 18 year old who is applying for financial aid and is being required to show proof of no income. He has never filed a tax return as he has never worked. Any thoughts on how he can do this?

EIC is a big player in my town. I would estimate that at least 60% of the 300 clients I saw this year qualified for EIC. You do have to be diligent with your questioning, and sometimes a bit sneakier than they are. I would estimate that of my 60% EIC clients 99% are upfront, but I have some that I catch in misstatements. Keep them talking long enough and they will reveal the truth!

Best to fit in around your schedule. Although we will suffer withdrawal for a day, it won't be the end of the world!
