  1. Go to the 1040EF. Make sure you check use last year's account number. If direct deposit of refund or amount due, you check the box. If new numbers, enter them on this form and they should transfer.
  2. Don't take this as "gospel", but this is what I have found: In my experience, which is limited, you won't find it in the loan docs. You have to find out what the "collateral" is. If the loan is secured "only" by the property it is nonrecourse. If a refi is taken out for more than the balance of the mortgage, the loan becomes recourse (from the research I have done). From Wikipedia: "A nonrecourse debt or non-recourse debt or nonrecourse loan is a secured loan (debt) that is secured by a pledge of collateral, typically real property, but for which the borrower is not personally liable. If the borrower defaults, the lender/issuer can seize the collateral, but the lender's recovery is limited to the collateral. If the property is insufficient to cover the outstanding loan balance (for example, if real estate prices have dropped), the lender is simply paid out the difference. Thus, non-recourse debt is typically limited to 80% or 90% loan-to-value ratios, so that the property itself provides "overcollateralization" of the loan. The purpose of non-recourse debt is to require lenders to underwrite their loans on a sustainable and prudent basis since the lender is in the first-loss position with these loans, not the borrower."

    Late RMD

From the Tax Book:New law. No RMD is required for calendar year 2009 from IRAs and employer-provided qualified retirement plans that are defined contribution plans (including 401(k) plans). The next RMD is for calendar year 2010. This relief applies to lifetime distributions to employees and IRA owners and after-death distributions to beneficiaries. Example 2: Jerry turns age 70½ in 2009. Under the new law, he is not required to take RMD by April 1, 2010. However, he is required to take RMD for 2010 by December 31, 2010. If Jerry were to die on or after April 1, 2010, the RMD for his beneficiary would be determined using the rule for death on or after the individual’s required beginning date. I couldn't find anything for 2008, but I haven't finished looking.
  5. Website for their version of the IRS. http://www.viirb.com/Contacts.html
  6. Working well for me. The only problems I've had, I created myself.
  7. If the client does not itemize on Sch A, he can claim up to $500 MFS, $1000 MFJ for real estate property taxes paid on his home. As far as the disaster loss, can't help you there.
  8. You need to use 8889. In part II, fill in the amount of distribution on line 14a. Then on 15 put down the amount of unreimbursed medical expenses. That should cover what you need.
  9. In the latest sign of tax trouble in the Obama cabinet, Labor Secretary-designate Hilda Solis’ husband had tax liens filed against him. Confirmation hearings for Rep. Solis, D-Calif., were delayed after news of the tax problems surfaced. The White House admitted to the latest tax snafu after USA Today discovered 15 tax liens dating back to 1993 from the State of California and Los Angeles County totaling $7,630, some of which have since been paid. The tax liens had been filed against Solis’s husband, Sam H. Sayyad, and his business, Sam’s Foreign and Domestic Auto Center. Sayyad paid $6,400 this week to settle the outstanding tax liens, but still plans to appeal them.
  10. You must be privileged or I'm on the s list. I only got one and that was how to reset my password without bothering support.
  11. To combine the client letter, just go to options when you have the client letter open. There is a box to check to combine the letters. As far as the return cover sheets, I can't remember where I saw that either. I keep mine separated because that's the way my clients seem to like it!?

After having to change my 44 day old password, I logged right in with no problem. Didn't stick around, normally there is not much going on.

    K-1 Import

It does warn you with a pop on your screen right after you import. I can't remember what it says, but something to do with changes.
  15. If you added up the number of posts on other boards, there would have to be a special catagory for him. How he gets time for his roses is beyond me.

    SD-40P

I have an EIC warning that comes every time I do a senior with pension and social security. It, too, is annoying. The warning tells me I have to figure the earned income on worksheet B. Surprise ATX, there is no earned income!
  17. "one company that services small CPA firms is seeing a 149 percent increase in filings. However, one company that services small CPA firms is seeing a 149 percent increase in filings. CCH Small Firm Services claims that it accounted for nearly one in five of the more than 11 million tax returns already filed with the IRS by tax professionals." 18. 20% of my returns are for clients' elderly parents. I sign all of them and do not charge for them. I guess I could claim barter trade as I always get a few home made cookies or something similar. With my rates, it would still take a lot of cookies to equal one tax return.
  19. In my case, same as post, the return kept getting rejected after the employer insisted it had been corrected. The client made them send her a copy of the corrected w-2 and guess what, they never changed it. Two days after electronically corrected, the return went through.
  20. "We actually made a cross-country trip in that car, with a baby and no air-conditioning. Nobody had air-conditioned cars in those days" Does anyone remember the canisterlike cooler that attached to the outside of the car window and when you drove, it would suck up the air and would supposedly cool the interior? This is way older than dirt.
  21. I thought I was. Now it is official. Of course, my wife says she only remembers a few. I accuse her of having short term memory loss, I guess I will have to expand my definition (quietly).
  22. Daschle to withdraw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He pays $12,000 in penalties and interest? She pays $652 in P&I, double standard again!!
  23. In northern California, we normally go by the three month rule. This year, though, it has been like spring since Christmas. AND, the roses are beautiful and the trees are all budding out. BUT, no rain, then no water for the gardens this summer.
  24. I, too, like seeing new members, not that I have been here that long. I have noticed, though, the disappearance of "new" software developer, rchinchilla!
  25. IRS Quick Alerts: "In addition we discovered that "Where's My Refund" was giving out incorrect information and the anticipated refund date was accelerated by one week. The system indicated the refund had been issued when in fact it was not. "Where's My Refund" has been corrected. We apologize for the confusion caused by this error but ask that you continue to refer your clients to this site when they are seeking refund information. Taxpayers are calling the IRS.gov website helpdesk. We then have to transfer them to our customer service representatives."
