I have a client who is the 'supervisor' for people who are working to get their hours. Sch C is correct. My client gets a 1099 from the people who are working for him; he gets a percentage of their billing.

I too am reading the boards before I install a new update. What I did for 12.8: shut down ATX. downloaded from the website. ran update. rebooted computer. opened ATX. No crashing issues. I also keep my task manager open and shut down the program when it starts running too much memory. CPU usage is better since the update.

I just checked one of my efiled returns (I'll have to amend it since the client got in another W-2 after we filed) and it opened ok. Just efiled my first 4562 too. I know some of the problems with the 'version' error are due to a corrupted form. Deleting that form in the program files and re-installing it seems to work per other responses on this board and the other one.

none of my clients know about the software issues, since I don't prepare in front of them. I'm actually ahead this year with clients whose docs are all in, and the number of returns I've done for the first two weeks of February.

I made the mistake of downloading 12.6 from inside the program and that was the first time I had any issues with crashing. Except for A/R and the drop down boxes, I haven't noticed anything happening with 12.8; if anything it's running with much less CPU usage. The crashing issues mostly came from trying to print to Adobe instead of the ATX printer, and opening up three returns (I duplicate the CA joint return twice for my same sex couples to do their single Federal returns). But I've been working fine with keeping CA open and just doing the singles one at a time. I still think that some of the network issues started up from people not setting it up correctly in the first place and then having to patch it. Except that Jack is having issues after 12.8, and I trust he knows what he's doing. Tons of the issues are from people not searching for a solution before screaming. Like the X000-005 efile reject. There have got to be 20-50 different threads over there regarding just this issue, which is not a software issue, it's a frikkin' input issue.
-
Click on the red box at the bottom of the explanation of the code, and it should take you to the field with the error. The x000-005 errors relate to the wrong type of character in a field, or a field empty that needs to be filled in, like your name in the 3rd party designee area.

I'm not doing MFS returns, I'm doing RDPS/SSMC returns. The line 21 adjustment has been the standard by which we in the LGBT tax community have been preparing these. With the new form we're trying different things, and filing with half on each line requires an override on nearly every line. Dividends we can nominee, same with tax exempt interest. Rentals are split into half interests. But also, community income cannot create things like EIC, if one partner has not actually earned the wages. This stuff isn't present in MFS returns.

I print to print preview first, just to check. I've also found that even if you uncheck the 'save selections' it still tends to print whatever was in the previous print.. For example, if I print the client copy first, no matter what I've checked or unchecked for the preparer copy still prints in the client copy. UNLESS I check & uncheck the preparer copy then check it again. This seems to clear up whatever gets stuck in the print manager.

I'm running ok, cross my fingers. the loader even shut down by itself last night. My CPU usage is at 0%, even with ATX open.

Head of Household vs. MFS - couple separated 2 years
joanmcq replied to gfizer's topic in General Chat
Yup, as long as the daughter spent more than half the year in the taxpayer's home. -
http://www.taxalmanac.org/index.php/Discussion:Bugs_in_Intuit%27s_EIC_Form_8867_Error-Checking Proseries has/had the same 8867 issue as ATX; no auto checking and no error message if you didn't fill out page 4. So don't use that as your reason to switch.

Please specify Jack. I haven't downloaded it yet.

Have Any of Your EIC Clients Received Their Refunds?
joanmcq replied to Chowdahead's topic in General Chat
I always read a new form completely. So yes for me. -
Donna, did you download it from the website or from within the program? I didn't have any issues until I made the mistake of downloading 12.5 from within the program. I've been meaning to post to find out if anyone has a fix for redownloading an update, but have still been chugging along doing returns. I've just started rebooting the program when memory runs low, or if nothing shows up in the rollover manager to rollover. Since I don't work in front of clients, and the program doesn't load slowly for me, its an acceptable workaround right now.

Proseries had a big error on the 8867. If you check Tax Almanac there's a discussion about it there. The H&R Block software is TaxWorks made by RedGear. They're having worse problems than ATX. The software is basically not functioning from what I've read.

7:15 PM EST: Our testing team just received a new 12.8 Release Candidate and is in the process of testing it. If testing goes as we expect it to tonight and in the morning, we are targeting a mid-day delivery on Friday. Below are some items that are planned to be released and/or corrected with the ATX 2012 Program Update 12.8. Please note that this is not an all-inclusive list. Important Network Workstations Network workstations must be closed prior to downloading the update on the network server. We are making some changes to improve the performance when your workstation is trying to sync with the server. You may want to open Preferences and turn off automatic updates prior to Friday if you are concerned about picking up the update after you are actively working in ATX 2012 on your workstations. Impact on filing returns with Form 4562 The release of the Forms update for the 4562 is dependent upon changes that were made in the 12.8 program update. The timing of downloading and applying the 12.8 update is very important. In order to give customers time to get the updates in the proper order, we will release the 12.8 approximately 12 hours before releasing the Forms update for the 4562. . Q: How will I know if I pick up the updates out of order? A: If you pick up the Forms Update for the 4562 prior to downloading and installing 12.8 and open a return that includes a 4562, your return will close. The Following Functionality has been added to the product Print a list of Return Errors: You will have the ability to print an error report from the Check Return diagnostics pane. Print Acknowledgements: You can now print your acknowledgments E-file Reject Status: The acknowledgement history dialog explains why an e-file is rejected and steps for reject correction. Print Preferences: You can now change the default print selection for Statements and Federal Attachments for State returns for all three print copies. This will allow you to eliminate the extra pages printing with your return. Printing Statements: Multiple statements will now print on a single page instead of printing one statement per page. View all downloaded forms: We have added a new forms tab to the Forms Update Report that will allow you to view all of the forms you downloaded. E-file Manager's Report Menu: You can now print a marked client list from the E-file Manager's report menu Custom List design changes and rollover: These changes allow you to design a list and preview it on the same screen. Custom lists are now included in the list of rollover over return items. Title area remains visible while scrolling: The titles will remain visible when you scroll right or down on various panes and worksheets. Exported Return naming convention: All exported 2012 returns has a .atxExport extension The following issues have been resolved in this Program Update for the Client Letter Right-Click to "re-add" federal and state letters and cover sheets to signature forms. Separate letters? I haven't noticed this issue, but I don't think I've had this situation yet. Most of my returns are RDP returns and that requires separate letters anyways.

But ATX doesn't have it.

Have Any of Your EIC Clients Received Their Refunds?
joanmcq replied to Chowdahead's topic in General Chat
My assistant got her EIC refund but she doesn't have kids. Transmitted the 4th, received on the 12th. -
No locality. If there's an amount in local taxes for CA SDI it's not a local tax. It should be in box 14, but a lot of employers put it in local tax. ATX has it as the second drop down selection in box 14.

The same phrase is in the Quick Answers. The sentence below says "expenses that are not currently deductible are amortized over 180 months". Normally, to capitalize expenses means to depreciate them. Do we have a cite that is authority?
-
I just check 'to be efiled' in the federal, then open the state letter. Less steps and it works.

Learning as assistant to your wife is great; nothing like hands on under supervision to get you going. You won't be able to take the Block course, but most tax societies, like NATP, NAEA have classes and training available. You don't have to be an EA to go to NAEA meetings/classes, and I've found them, at least our local ones, to be excellent. There are a lot of online beginning and intermediate 1040 and biz return courses that will get you familiar with basic return prep. Maybe someone else here has experience with them, but I know CCH & RIA offer them. You can get package deals with RIA that allows unlimited courses plus discounts on Gear Up seminars.

If boyfriend does not contribute support, then student may qualify. You've got to do the dependency worksheet. All three of those qualifications have to be present-basically they are not allowing the refundable part for students that could have been claimed by their parents, but are not being claimed. So if the student provides more than 1/2 of his/her support, neither mom or boyfriend could claim student.

He should be able to get a credit on Nebraska for the taxes paid to Wisconsin. I'm not that familiar with those two states, so I'm not quite sure of all of the details. Employer should be strung up by their thumbs. It is their problem, but if they won't fix it, you'll have to apportion the income on the returns, and be ready for a letter from the states. the home state likely will report all the income as taxable, but the credit for taxes paid to WI should offset that.
