I know this is a taxable event, but is the award taxable?
joanmcq replied to Pacun's topic in General Chat
I almost fell down my stairs this morning while playing "where'd I leave that damn cell phone". It ended up being an IRS agent on the line..... -
Nah, then you'll want three. So.....I only have two inputs for monitors on my computer. Can I use a splitter/adapter to get a third up there? And is there any type of specialized video card to go from two to three monitors?

And efile is up & running for 940s & 941s. Just submitted mine.

I have Medlin for payroll, but not to do accounting in. ATX for tax (and to efile those pesky payroll forms), an ancient version of Simply Accounting for my books and QB for clients that like QB. What are you using Medlin for?

But the question I have is: did he actually dissolve the S-corp? Should a 2012 corp return have been filed? What about assets in the corp? -
How to make sure all pending returns have been efiled.

I don't check that the return is complete until I get an efile acceptance. -

I figured out #3 a couple years ago, pretty much as soon as I didn't have any outside employment. Work whenever I'm clearheaded, which for me tends to kick in again around 11pm. I get a second wind that allows me to do some of my best work and very little to distract me. I do have a few night owl clients that have figured they'll get an email response after midnight though! I hate it if appointments keep me from getting a nap when I need one, but I try to schedule during times I'm least likely to need one. One reason I love drop offs and getting docs through the portal! Now if I could just get #5 worked out. Regular food is hard during the off season, much less during! I keep cereal in my office. -
Hi Mike! I'm in Sacramento as Tom said. I'll email you.

I'm going to ask my client if they have insurance and if not, discuss the implications of the ACA with them, and direct them to CoveredCA if they don't have insurance. I'll also make sure they know what the subsidy, if any, is based on, and tell them about the penalty. I also have a client that is an insurance agent, so if they are really confused I can make a referral.

What is the proper respose to "How Much do you charge"
joanmcq replied to Naveen Mohan from New York's topic in General Chat
I've had a lot of price inquiries over the past few years, mostly because I've gotten a lot of new clients that haven't had professional tax prep before and really had no idea what it cost. I tell them I can't give an estimate until I understand the complexity of their return. I've only had one of those whose 'few' stock sales turned out to be closer to 100. And the number of actual sales was less, but the way the broker presented the sales required I enter purchase lots for a lot of them, not to mention ST vs. LT. -
I've only opened my own return, but not done any input yet.

The log is to be kept 'per gambling session' which for slots is until you cash out. So no, you don't record transactions with one hand and pull the lever with the other. But you do need to have the record. An ATM slip won't do. You could have put all the cash into the slot machine, or you could have gone to the buffet & a show before sitting down to gamble. Coins are actually a moot point now; all the casinos I've seen lately use tickets. So the win/loss statement, if you use a loyalty card and should the casino gather the info, has the ability to more accurate as to actual wins & losses rather than just the coin in/coin out I've seen in the past.

Using the drop down box or right click works too

I use copy & paste, including control + c & control + v. No issues with locking up.

Renting out rooms of your primary residence
joanmcq replied to Tax Prep by Deb's topic in General Chat
Well, I don't use the part the trailer is parked on... Ah, deduction would be minuscule anyways. -
News for all of you; ATM withdrawals are NOT proof of losses or the amount gambled in a session. So if Muldoon was audited, he's got $27,000 of winnings. He might be able to argue that the casino statement is proof, but since there are usually more little wins that don't result in a W2G, the coin in & out isn't an accurate record. A diary is the only proof by regs that is accepted.

The 8958 came out in 2012. Brand new form, so don't worry that you haven't heard of it.

I'm looking to gain more small biz clients for bookkeeping and tax work since my assistant handles the bookkeeping work. I'd like to get her to be working as much as she wants to be. So I'm looking to increase my marketing exposure in that area.

I've used Lion's method when the clients already exist in my system; for example in CA there would already be an MFJ return for state filing, so I change the column A numbers to match the 'taxpayer' return after 'amending' the return I've already used as the proforma for the CA filing. The IRS FAQs for same-sex couples are here: http://www.irs.gov/uac/Answers-to-Frequently-Asked-Questions-for-Same-Sex-Married-Couples It doesn't matter if AZ accepts the marriage, the feds do. So for all federal purposes, the couple is married even if their resident state does not recognize it.
