  1. Ha, my kitty helper hard booted my computer & screwed up ATX. I shake out crumbs all the time from my keyboard & blow out hair. But I'd hate to see what all might be in there. She also sneaks in the office and liberates my pens.
  2. Paper file
  3. I've got a client that had to repay private disability insurance once his SS disability was approved. Anyone know if there is a worksheet to compute this in ATX?
  4. Ugh, I haven't tried to boot my old XP laptop recently, but I have all my pre-2008 programs on it. And a MUCH better photo editor than on any of my newer computers. I have a non filer I'm working on, & will need to go back 6 years.
  5. I've got to admit, it's nice to have the print go to PDF by mistake, as I've done a couple of times, rather than have a hard copy start to print when I wanted a PDF like happened more than a few times in 2012!
  6. I've a client that this will pertain to that just came in yesterday. Thank you for the insight, even if the original post doesn't qualify!
  7. Dear new maybe client, Yes we've only communicated by email and you never gave me your phone number. And I'm sorry you didn't read on my website that I work from home and have critters, one of which might be in the yard, so when you came to my address, you were not sure you were at the right place. I booked out two hours for your appointment since you have a complex tax matter, and I usually don't start on other work when I'm expecting an appointment, especially when my inside doggie doorbell goes off a few times and I go to the door to see if you've arrived. If you'd actually gotten out of your car you might have noticed me at the door. Or if you'd brought my phone number and used the cell phone you keep only for emergencies, we could have not wasted a bunch of time on both ends.
  8. Last year a client brought me chocolate on valentines day! Loved it. (Love chocolate period!)
  9. I'm with Kea, as a true night owl, my appointments start at 1pm and I'll take one as late as 7pm. Saturdays are fine too, but I rarely meet anyone on Sunday. I take off when I want to; for example this upcoming Wednesday Burning Man tickets go on sale and I will be working on one monitor and hitting the 'buy tickets' button until I get one. And I'll freely tell clients this. And the week after that I'm leaving early to go on an actual date. But I'll work on Saturday.
  10. And.....the new update just installed.
  11. I was out Saturday afternoon and my internet went down Sunday morning. I just got the computer back up and running late last night after having to take apart my entire system so the repairman could get to the jacks since I had to move my desk.
  12. Tech support was able to fix it. I'm going to get the patch from Jack tomorrow. Utterly stupid design on my HP. every other desktop has the power button on the front, not the top of the tower.
  13. I've found it easier to get paid, and paid faster having Square. Everyone carries a debit and/or credit card, few carry a checkbook anymore. Clients don't seem to mind paying the fee when using a credit card; they don't worry about having the money in the account. its easy, and the client gets an email receipt. I consider the fees as a cost of business.
  14. I did a reboot and then did a reboot with scandisk. Didn't help. The workstation is running ATX fine, albeit a bit slow to boot as it does if the program is not open on the server.
  15. server computer still won't open the program, but it does open under either sign-in on the other workstation. However, I can't roll over any returns since they are all on the server computer since that was my only computer last year. Any ideas on how to fix this? I need to call tech support tomorrow.
  16. how do I do that?
  17. The server computer is the one that's screwed up. 2013 program is the issue
  18. Nope. I'm doing a complete system reboot with scan disk, so it'll take a while. I can get in on my assistants computer but can only log in as her. And she can't do rollovers.
  19. I'm getting the error message: the program has encountered an unexpected error and needs to close. Its closed. Last night my cat switched off my computer while I was working. the details to the error message are: Session Summary Information: Date/Time: 01/30/14 5:21:54 PM ApplicationVersion: 13.2.1500.9 CommandLine: "C:Program Files (x86)CCH Small Firm ServicesATX2013ATX2013.exe" CurrentCultureName: en-US CurrentUICultureName: en-US DnsDomainName: Duration: 00:00:00.2184004 HostName: joancpa-PC MemoryMB: 9207 OSArchitecture: Amd64 OSCultureName: en-US OSFullNameWithServicePack: Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1 OSVersion: 6.1.7601 ProcessorCores: 8 OSVersion: 6.1.7601 RuntimeVersion: 4.0.30319.18052 OSVersion: 6.1.7601 TerminalServer: False System.TypeInitializationException: The type initializer for '<Module>' threw an exception. ---> System.TypeInitializationException: The type initializer for 'Sfs.Core.Values.VariantFactoryRegistry' threw an exception. ---> System.Configuration.ConfigurationErrorsException: Configuration system failed to initialize ---> System.Configuration.ConfigurationErrorsException: Root element is missing. 20. I got my iPad primarily for the same reason: travel. My old laptop weighed a ton and the new one I bought as a computer for my assistant to work on and for remote work, not to take on airplanes. The iPad (or any tablet) doesn't have to be taken out of a case and is light to carry. I just put it in the tote I always take as my second carry-on and it goes through security as easy as a purse or a jacket. Plus its a lot easier on my old eyes. I got an iPad 2, not one of the latest versions and as long as I have wifi, I have all I need when on the road. The Windows or Android versions might have a conventional wired hookup which I do miss in hotels where the wifi is spotty. I bought a case that has a Bluetooth keyboard attached, and although that adds a bit of weight, it helps when I have to do a lot of keying.
  21. But they are great for research & surfing this board. I have it open on my iPad (like I'm posting this on it) and it frees up my computer & monitors for work.
  22. I heard on the news the authorities were requesting that no nonessential trips be made, as in stay off the roads. Ice storms are nasty at any time, and when people have no experience driving in it.... My sister lives outside of DC and one of her running jokes is how no one down there knows how to drive in snow (we grew up in Pittsburgh and had a lot of experience). the Maryland border is where at least until recently, the 'snow line' was; north of there, snow. South of it, clear roads. Of course, DC is getting quite a bit of snow experience the last few years.
  23. My home office people keep good records. I make them do so, otherwise no deduction. Now at least I can offer the simplified method of they do have a bona fide OIH.
  24. It's not true that same sex couples can no longer register as RDPs. My assistant just did this past November. But no, the IRS does not recognize them as married although CA does. So you'd still file two single (or single/HOH if applicable) federal returns under community property rules, and CA as either MFS or MFJ. There is quite a bit of litigation and requests for clarification going on regarding RDPs and civil unions. You could file a protective claim for the 2011 year as joint in case the rules change in the future. I did so for several of my married clients and the claims for 2008 & 2009 are just starting to be processed.
