  1. I have one client I have to pull the info for foreign div from the statement. They give ordinary div info, but not qualified or cap gains. Grrrr. I've found the broker firms are doing a much better job in giving us the info we actually need to prepare the returns.
  2. I got an EIN so I wouldn't have to give out my SSN for 1099 forms. You can get one online in minutes.
  3. I got artisan chocolates today from a client. If I wasn't fried from lack of food & too much caffeine I'd feel much better. Mmmmm mm chocolate.
  4. Don't put in anything but the tax & it will flow to the 1040 under the exception to filing a 1116, if under $300 for single or $600 for MFJ. If you put in anything else (and ATX will default to putting all the div as foreign as mentioned above) then it goes to the 1116 & the rest of the data has to be complete, including date.
  5. Call FTB, and shoot the title company agent. Didn't you get a whole host of error messages for not having the 593 completely filled out? I just did one and couldn't complete it without having a copy of the damned form.
  6. I first read this as "find an appropriate sized hammer". I was wondering if it was to hit the attorney, the client or both.
  7. The statements/elections form? There's a blank statement you can use. If the federal return goes with the state (in CA there's a checkbox for if any schedules other than A or B are attached, you check it and a copy of fed goes with state).
  8. Hey, I'm actually printing out a return! That's done! Last bit of info came in. Whoo hoo. Tonight is 'Blacklist' night, so I get to watch James Spader while eating dinner. Better get to cooking something, pronto. I'm still looking for that nonalcoholic bourbon though.
  9. Contract labor. *giggles*
  10. I pretty much do them in the order they come in, but if I'm frustrated by the growing 'need more info' pile, I might pull out an easy one that I know I can get done & make me feel like I'm actually accomplishing something! And yes, tonight I'm slogging through the one with foreign rental, out of state rental, 10 different donations of stuff, and a foreign trust return.
  11. I waited until very late last night when I missed the postpone button. Seemed to go fine & did the workstation today. No issues, but I haven't been in the program much since I just woke up from a nap after the wall to wall overlapping clients this afternoon. But I didn't hear any howls of frustration from my assistant so I guess it's working ok.
  12. I double booked my 3pm time slot for return pickups today. Frikkin madhouse. At least the clients understood.
  13. ATX never had various for the 1116. Don't know why.
  14. Hell, I don't drink, but have what's left of a six-pack of O'Douls in the fridge. I think I should pick up another. This time of year, I need the vicarious thrill of pretending I'm drinking. My roommate is putting pineapple on the pizza, but we are both out of bacon. The horror! Maybe while I'm at the store I should pick up some non-alcoholic wine too. I really need some nonalcoholic bourbon....
  15. If the dividends weren't qualified, they're taxed at a different rate too. I got a client two years ago who had been told he had no filing requirement by a prior preparer.....and then got demand notices from CA. Turns out he may not have given the 1099-div to prior preparer since he didn't bring them to me either, but were on the CA notice. I had to pull transcripts and then client managed to get the 1099s from his broker within a day or so.
  16. That was a laugh out loud, read to the roommate one. Thank you!
  17. It's a claim of right. Follow under those rules.
  18. I go over the stuff if I have an in person appointment & will send them home with a list. My assistant does initial keying of the return and then it goes into the queue. I pick up returns in the order they come in & review, ask any additional questions at that time (usually by email) and then the return is put in the 'waiting for additional stuff' pile. As I get in the stuff, I finish the return. I've got a list at the front of any return of the stuff I need, so I can just glance at the list & check off stuff as it comes in.
  19. Jeez, that's insane for $150! I'm cheap, and I won't do just 1040 with Sch A for that, not even 10 years ago when I was starting out.
  20. I've got one of these coming for 2014. Got the letter already saying it was being distributed....
  21. The employer can offer up to 5k in education benefits pre tax. The rest would be taxable.
  22. There is a description on the line 7 worksheet. It prints SCH next to line 7
  23. I wish my dogs liked baths that much!
  24. BTW, community college in CA is still really really cheap. I'm going to bet most of that $1400 is for books. Also, there are still places to live in CA that are pretty damn cheap. Just sayin'
  25. You've got to be clearer as to what he's doing. I got lost after his IRA loaned money to wife's corp
