  1. I love my assistant! This has really been the most stress free season I've had since my practice has gotten big. She's learned so much in the last year; some of the returns she keyed were only at my desk for review, not prep. Today she came in to make me clean off my desk and straighten up (found the desk eventually, BTW). We got all the extensions alphabetized except for the few that are not missing items, but we ran out of time. Offices vacuumed and sort of dusted.
  2. I shut my phone off at 5pm on the 15th & announced the shop was closed for the rest of the week on my Facebook page. Yesterday I got my hair done & ran some errands, & met friends for coffee. Today I washed dishes and am contemplating cleaning my house from the comfort of my couch, iPad on my lap. Plan on getting a mani/pedi, but the couch has it's hold on me... Tomorrow my assistant is coming in and she said we were going to get my desk clean....and vacuum. Yes, ma'am, I sez to her. I need to give her a raise...
  3. I send them home with a list too, if they are missing items, including any kind of valuation for Goodwill, etc. donations. I also file a lot of extensions. One couple, I have most if not all of their stuff, but the final k1 came in very late. Contacted them about amounts due, and said: I could finish this, but yours is a very complex return (it is) and I'd rather be doing the final check when I have had ample rest and have a few more brain cells functioning. Answer: thank you for being so thorough. And we will be in Sacramento May 4, can we take you out to dinner and finally meet face to face?
  4. Back from my date. Dinner & a movie. And I shut my phone off.
  5. I started sending out all the state ones and then of course I got a federal reject. I had put the first name as the last name. State went through backwards. Oops.
  6. I have stopped to smell my roses twice today. I've a HUGE climbing rose that I've not pruned and it's twining into the mulberry tree near it, as tall as the garage and absolutely covered in blooms. So fragrant I can smell them from up on the balcony. Then there are at least three more blooming, plus irises, and vinca, and lavender & sage. I love spring in my yard!
  7. Well, I used to see all of those at my last w2 job, which I'd y'all remember was audit representation for all those TurboTax people that did all those stupid mistakes. Got a couple as clients now too!
  8. I need to run out with some extensions and drop my estimates in the mail. I've told people the doors are closed at 5pm. I have a date tonight.
  9. None of my efiles since this afternoon have been acked.
  10. I read that as all AM! Which sounds more like me, stopping work 'early' is 3am, and might be asleep by 5am. But I have only one more to do, and a date tomorrow night.
  11. Hell, I have one 9 stater! This year I've done CA, NY, GA, NC, AZ, NM, WI, ND, LA, PA, MI, NJ, MA, OK, CO, HI, OH....and probably a few others I can't remember offhand. I was counting clients I've filed, not returns....
  12. The eclipse viewing is going to be excellent here. Clear night; I can just pop out of my office onto my roof balcony & see it.
  13. I already told a client the shop, was closing up by 5pm tomorrow. No ifs, ands, or buts. Gave him the info to do a credit card pay since he's out of town until tomorrow night. Just emailed another client of their balances due, and have another RDP couple to file extensions for; another Sch C! Ugh. And gotta mail my own estimates. So frikkin tired. But it's Blacklist night, and there's a lunar eclipse. And I know y'all get quieter in the off season, but I'm happy y'all are here.
  14. I am.....almost done.
  15. We'll, I'm adding extensions as I'm typing this. Looks like a decent off season!
  16. Is it still subject to the penalty if used as housing? I'd think so.
  17. Yup. I'm getting a lot more clients that are actually asking my advice about such things.....in advance! Gotta love these guys. Then I can bill and the clients get advice that saves them money, even if it's "should I pay my tax bill with a credit card or do an installment plan?". I'm selling my knowledge more and more, rather than just cranking out returns, and that feels good.
  18. I do all of mine, but only 188 so far this year. My assistant does a lot of data entry.
  19. I'm sure I'll raise it. This is the first time I'm adjusting my base 1040 fee upwards on everyone I'm finishing up now, just for poop & giggles. Ha. And I'm not doing that much either. Just a chronic under billet, I guess.
  20. And so they can advertise "no closing costs!".
  21. 9th circuit. I guess some of it turns on whether pregnancy or to be exact, unwanted pregnancy is a medical injury or not.
  22. Do you mean implied they were not taxed at settlement?
  23. I've been ignoring the reduction and not amortizing the fees, since they weren't paid.
  24. The tubal isn't, but what about the pregnancy?
  25. I've read the settlement docs but am still unsure on this one. Client had a child with birth defects and had a tubal ligation to ensure she wouldn't get pregnant again. Doctors assured her the tubal was successful. About 6 months later she was pregnant with another child who had the same birth defects. She sued and was awarded quite a bit of money, but most of it is in trust for the child that was born, for future medical expenses. That much good. She was personally awarded $89,898, $33,299 went to the attorneys, $5702 for direct medical expenses already incurred and the client received $50,897. No 1099 was issued by the attorneys. The settlement was awarded for future medical expenses, plus emotional & physical distress. I know the direct medical expenses are not taxable. The rest???? any thoughts here? The client is an EIC candidate if this is not taxable too, so I need to be very careful. And this is for the extension....
