  1. I posted the materials for my class on the ACA on my website http://www.afsb.net/joancpa/newsletter.php?nid=17126 If you don't like to click links, just go to www.joancpa.com and click on Newsletters.
  2. Me too. Can we still shut off the auto update like we could last year?
  3. I've gotten the error message more and more (at least during 2013) as I rolled over more returns. Now I usually have to click at least twice for it to go away. I haven't had it yet for 2014, but then again, I only have one return rolled over.
  4. I installed the network version a few days ago & no issues. Rolled over mt return. But I did reboot my computer after installation.
  5. My sister in Maryland had this issue when all my dad's mail (he lived in PA) went to her since she managed his financial affairs. His TIAa-CREF pension decided to start withholding MD taxes instead of PA taxes because of this. We did, however, file the tax returns with dad's address so we were able to get it straightened out with MD by filing the NR return to get back the withholding. I would only file the NR state return if the POA's state came looking for it.
  6. Just trying to get an idea of what's a reasonable rate, not for weekly (won't do it!). This would include the quarterly & yearly for a state like CA with state income tax withholding. Anyone know what ADP and Paychex charge?
  7. I always insist on the original docs even if they want an organizer!
  8. I provide organizers to the clients that request them and put in my client letter that they are available. What I do send out each year to everyone are the questions from the organizer, and add a page with additional questions I like to ask. Most get e-versions through my portal and I only mail to the few that don't have internet/aren't internet savvy.
  9. No, then you send them to me. I do work remotely and will prepare returns regardless of the state they are in. I'm up to date in all the state's laws regarding same-sex couples.
  10. Only issue I've had has been having to swipe a few times, and the new reader I got doesn't seem to work with my 3GS iPhone. But I am planning on upgrading my phone soon. Or maybe I got a dud reader.
  11. Damn, I thought I had replied to this. The class is the Sacramento Chapter of CSTC's October dinner meeting, on the 28th. Starts at 6pm. one hour by me on filling out the forms, and an hour by Marc Zine, our IRS Practitioner's liaison. I'm not sure what he'll be talking about. Its at Mimi's Café on Alta Arden Way in Sacramento for anyone out there that might like to attend!
  12. Yeah, I wouldn't have been on the computer on a Friday night following tax Armageddon day if not for that grant. At 9pm, when voting closed, I went on a Game of Thrones binge. Now it's scan & shred time!
  13. Client asked if contributing to an IRA is frowned upon by the college aid people. She had read it on the internet while trying to deal with it. If so, is a 401(k) contribution looked at the same way? Clients have twins entering college, sold their rental to help pay for it, but want to sock away some for themselves too.
  14. True.
  15. I'm teaching a class on how to fill out the forms on the 28th, so I figure I better have a decent idea of how to do it by then. A way to increase billings....
  16. I'm in the middle of a refi, and can't get the guy doing it to contact me back. My ex is bugging the crap out of me to get his name off the last loan we had joint.
  17. I'll call 'em on Monday & see what I can get. Didn't even see the email from ATX. I wasn't opening anything that wasn't from a client in this last week. My billings are down about 10k from last year. Didn't lose a lot of clients, but most of the same-sex returns were a lot easier than last year. I need to conserve $$ wherever I can. Ah well, if nothing else, that vote campaign sure did get my name out there in the last few days!
  18. Ya know, the voting period was 9/17-10/17. Not the best time for me to be thinking creatively. I literally didn't get the light bulb going off until yesterday. I'm going to try again next year, and I'll be better prepared. Last night I was watching as friends logged onto Facebook & messaged all of them. Got over 100 votes in a day! But I noticed not a lot of people were on here last night :(
  19. That one was really only available in community property states.
  20. Anyone know if you can renew online or if you have to call? since if I have to call, I've missed it...
  21. Hi all, I'm applying for a grant through this process, and need to get 250 votes to qualify for the next round. Anyways, I've got only 4 hours left and need less than 50. Didn't have a lot of time in the last few weeks to figure out how to work social media to get my posts seen. So anyways, help a fellow tax geek out please! https://www.missionmainstreetgrants.com/business/detail/11505
  22. Gutted by fire in Detroit? It MIGHT be worth $600. If you watch the video, no one's taking him up on it. Original listing price, $3000, then dropped to $2000.
  23. And don't forget the 8938.or is it the 8988? Form for reporting foreign accounts. Luckily, if it is reported on a 5471 you're filing with the retune, the 8938 only requires you to check a box.
  24. I couldn't even create one. But I rebooted everything & it fixed.
