I was having the same issue on my own return; I kept bouncing from having a 3k refund to owing that amount (I've received no advanced credit because when I got insurance I didn't think I was even in the ballpark for getting a subsidy). I figured next year if I am close, it is very easy to manipulate income when you are SE; sec 179, IRA, solo K contributions. Or just take a week of CPE at Disney World again :)

JB, audits have been lost on spending one night together during that last 6 months. By her testimony, he was there for more than one night. Second, what's the problem with MFJ? Why don't they want to file joint?

At this point you can just do a corrected return. Gotta be paper filed, write "corrected return" across the top in red.

Yes, the only one I've filed already was my own employee's.

Yay me...just filed all 2014 1099-MISC forms for clients!
joanmcq replied to Janitor Bob's topic in General Chat
I don't efile the 1099s until at least mid February so that anyone that might need a correction has time to give them to me. Easier to correct it if I haven't filed yet! -
I am proud I did do at least my minimum exercise before the client appointments began today. And my phone tracked walking up 10 flights of stairs and I know I did at least two more when I wasn't carrying the phone! Benefit of having an upstairs office Filed my first return today too.

Client moved to MA in June and got Mass Health. Decided later that MA was not for her, and this Month moved back to CA. Did not earn much in MA & qualified during that period. 1st question: does MA use total year income like the ACA would to qualify a person for Mass Health? 2nd question: what is the form she will be getting and can she get it online? If so, where? And is she automatically re-enrolled or would she have had to requalify as of dec. 31?

I'm trying to lose weight and don't want to think about chocolate! Only 5 lbs so far, but I don't need to backslide during the season....damn.

Thanks, this was quick!! She files exempt due to military, but asked me if she still needs to file year after year.

I played with an 8962 before I plugged some of my income into the return. At 38k for a single 54 year old with no dependents I was getting about half of my premiums paid back with a credit; over 3k in credit. I was very surprised at how high the credit was. and 400% of the poverty rate was much higher than what was in the calculator I used to determine if I should even buy through the marketplace. So the credits can be quite high. Then I put in more income.....

Client is technically an Ohio resident due to military. She's been filing a military exemption in Upper Arlington for many years, but no longer has any connection to Upper Arlington; her parents have moved and she hasn't lived there since she entered the military. Does she still need to file? If not, is there something she should file so that RITA will leave her alone?

Lots of healing energy to your wife, and may your stress be lifted. A friend of mine and tax colleague just got out of the hospital from surgery for sarcoma. Not a good time to have to deL with you or a loved one's health! And his wife has had two surgeries for cancer in the last 6 months or so too.

Envelopes W-2's printed off the Social Security Administration's web site

I use the uni-forms too. I bought one batch years ago & still have a lot left. -
I use another line, unless all the improvements were done before placing it in service. If the improvements are a different UoP, like replacing all the wiring, then I think I'll always use a separate line.
-
I don't understand what you mean by capital improvements not added to capital, but depreciated separately? Do you mean a separate line of the dep schedule?.

This is why I still have a landline and a corded (NOT a handset) speakerphone. I just let the music play while I work on other stuff. So I only charge for the time I'm with the agent.

ATX Organizer falls very short for ACA input to 2014 returns
joanmcq replied to David W Ristau CPA's topic in General Chat
Lol. I don't send out full organizers unless requested, but I do send out the questionnaires. I've a detailed ACA questionnaire that was shared on another board that I'll be using during my interview. -
Request from Banker about client moving to Florida
joanmcq replied to cred65's topic in General Chat
I just refi'd and got a HELOC and neither lender asked for a CPA letter ;) -
I check the box, and I've called a few times for simple questions about the return and was successful in talking to the agent. Math error kind of stuff. It works for CA.

Some of mine are close; I'm more in line with the less expensive areas though.

Protecting our data from tax preparers being twitchy or careless
joanmcq replied to FreedomTaxed's topic in General Chat
I do the same as Rich for clients that I run projections; save after filing. If I am just opening a return to review an entry, then no saving. For amended returns, I always check the 'as originally filed' numbers against the original return, which I keep a paper or PDF copy. This year I believe I will save a preparer copy with all worksheets in PDF to lessen the amount of times I might need to open the program. Having the worksheets gives you all of the data entry, and unless the return is hugely complex, I know what screens I enter numbers. I don't run too many projections (yet). If I start doing more, I may want to invest in other software, like Tax Tools. -
I believe that if the dependent does file, then the wages are included in household income. However this is off the cuff; I'll have to review my notes to see if I'm correct here.

I like the idea of saving a PDF copy. If done with all the worksheets, that's pretty much everything you'd need to track any entry you made in preparing the return. I'm trying to use less paper, but I still like to have the previous year in a paper file. But I hate having to open up the previous years programs & returns if I have to review an entry for some reason. -
I have the same problem on my phone, but it's a bit easier now that I have an iPhone 6. It's just a wee bit bigger, but not one of the huge phones some of my friends have.
