  1. Hey, the brokerage firms do corrected corrected 1099s all the time. might want to put a date on it somewhere.
  2. IRAs always have the taxable amount not determined box checked, because the custodian has no idea of the taxable amount. The only true pensions I've seen with the box checked are old ones from OPM, where you have to use the simplified method to determine the taxable portion.
  3. 50. The pension is actually received under a spousal remainder, although the client has always been disabled. His spouse died last year.
  4. I know this has been discussed before, but my search brought up every topic with 1099 in it, and I don't feel like searching through 159 pages of posts. Yes, even with advanced search. client has about 5k of pension, code 3 disability under normal retirement age. Does this qualify for EIC? No other wages, just social security income.
  5. Finally worked. Hard to surf the forum in a new format using a new method (new content link)
  6. And, I cleared history and I still get the damned 504 error message. I can go anywhere but the general chat page. Grrrrr!
  7. Eric, every time I try to go to the general chat page, I get the error message page. Must be in cache in my iPad. Do you know how to get rid of cache in the iPad?
  8. Yes, I do it whenever I find an error. Sometimes it's when it's sold, like one in my extension pile, and some when I get a new client.
  9. This year I did just use Medlin for the W2s. I will not paper file 1099s; it's a pain in the butt. Unlimited efiling should be just that.
  10. Why not? Not everyone here uses ATX, a lot switched to Drake, or other software. We even have a sub forum for Drake specific questions! Not me though...didn't like it.
  11. I do payroll for one client. He wants me to make the payments for the 941 & 940, as well as prepare the forms. I would do this through direct pay or EFTPS. I declined doing this originally because of the liability; don't want to be a 'responsible party' for civil penalties, etc. of course, if I was to make the payments, there wouldn't be any penalties, etc. I already have access to the biz bank account to pay the employees. What do you do for your payroll clients? Do you send payments or just prepare returns?
  12. No $#1+. I am pissed about that, and the fee exists with the total tax office too. I create the efile with ATX and then file at the SSA website. Why should it be extra to efile 1099s? BTW, Medlin creates the W2 efile as well as ATX.
  13. ^^^ me too. They ask for a copy do extension, that's what they get.

    2011 Refund

CA has a 4 year SOL too.
  15. Blah, blah, blah. My assistant brought me Michael Reschutti chocolate today. Y'all keep up your pugilistic behavior. I'll sit back & have another piece.
  16. 'Leasing' solar panels is a crock. It's more like the company is leasing your roof to put the panels up; I was flabbergasted when Solar City started promoting this, but Elon Musk is laughing his way to the bank. I've had several clients buy panels, and most have no electric bills now, even in summer. I'd like to put panels on a pole barn or carport. My roof isn't really suitable, but I've plenty of land to put em up anywhere I want to.
  17. The speed issue is a factor if you have a high volume practice and/or prepare returns in front of the client. I don't have either of these, so I've found things to do, like review the client documents, prior year file while waiting to get the return or program or whatever to open. Now 2012 was another story altogether!
  18. My 1040 & Sch. A fees each go up by $5 every year, as does my per hour fee. I'm working to get the base Sch. C up to $100. That covers the cost of the software. I also started billing at full price to anyone I discount and then showing the discount in stead of just discounting off the top.

    I'm busy

I did that last night; close to 7pm, I had a client uploading a 1099-R & reports from Square for her Sch C biz. Assistant put in the 1099-R and I emailed her back what she owed based on just that & links to direct pay & web pay. Answered the next email with- I'm done. Just pay something, especially to Ca so you have a valid extension there. The federal extension was already filed in my 'heard from you but didn't get any stuff' yet batch.

    Done!

Just got a call from a prospective new client. The coffee is working enough that I could actually have a coherent discussion about record keeping. Had a client whose return is basically done, but two of their charitable letters didn't have the required goods & services statement so it was on hold until we get new letters (these are thousand dollar donations, so we definitely want perfected letters!). Sent email to wife and didn't hear from her (they owe), so ended up just filing the extensions without a payment. Get an email & really early phone call this morning that I didn't answer; she flew last minute to Lithuania yesterday because he mother had a fall. So I'll have to try to walk husband (who is MUCH older - in his 80's) and not the computer savvy one as to how to pay online, or grab estimate vouchers from my portal. Might be easier to just overnight paper vouchers. Thank god the coffee is working!

    Done!

I shouldnt be short on the extension; I'm mostly done. Wasn't sure if I'd contribute to an IRA or not. Might have a few more expenses here and there. I could have done that though. I'm just too frikkin fried to have thought of it.
  22. Me too. The last thing I did was go through all of the clients that were still incomplete. Two sent in Paper extensions and I had missed a couple others. Found a few I hadn't marked complete that should have been. Love that screen at the bottom!
  23. I was woken up this morning by a client at the door who is really good at just showing up. My roommate answered and I overheard him saying "she's not awake yet". I yelled out something like -I still need the big charitable receipt! But couldn't get back to sleep. Got coffee and my assistant had put a bag of Godiva truffles on my desk. She was also wearing a t-shirt that said "ACCOUNTING ASSISTANT- ONLY BECAUSE FREAKING MIRACLE WORKER IS NOT AN OFFICIAL JOB TITLE" I had someone uploading their P&L at almost 7pm. I emailed back (after sending instructions for Direct Pay and CA's WebPay). Just send them some money, I don't care how much, you owe about 7k to the Feds and 5k to CA just on your IRA withdrawal. Not doing anything else. I'm done. And I am. I'll check for ACKs in another hour or two. That's it.
  24. I had one of those random compliance audits - just happened to be the first year for community property splitting for SSMCs AND the client had an MLM. The MLM came through fine, and I did NOT push the envelope with it at all. She still had a loss, but at least I was able to tell the auditor that she had made the wise business decision to quit before she lost any more.
  25. I've been reading Rita's comments aloud to non tax people like my roommate and the young gal that was staying in my room at the conference I was just at. They get it because they know what I'm going through!
