  1. You may have to set up a new EFTPS account. I changed just the bank account info on a clients account and had to set up a new PIN because it was considered a new account.
  2. I give general advice much like ^^. I can discuss different types of funds, IRAs vs Roths, mention the big three (Fidelity, Vanguard, T. Rowe Price) and I'll generally recommend index or target date retirement funds. I also discuss risk tolerance. I don't recommend a particular company or funds.
  3. I wouldn't get the home version anyways.
  4. Found out you have to copy the entire server folder. Called tech support today and my first gal couldn't get the 2013 files to load and pretty quickly got Derrick from higher tech support. Derrick was awesome and got 2013, 2014 up and running in no time flat then installed payroll for 2012, 2013, & 2014 and mapped them to the network which I'd never been able to do. Then I had to quickly finish a 2011 return that I was just starting when the whole thing went down. Meet with client to get the 2012 data, schedule the monthly payroll deposits, eat dinner. tonight I get to run that 2012 return for the same client, make a bank deposit, then pack for the CSTC conference in Vegas. Put windshield wiper fluid in the car. damn I'm tired. It was a high as hell stress afternoon. And yes, I'm charging the client quite well for the back returns.
  5. Can someone steer me to where the actual return backups are located? Program data\CCH small firm services\ATX2013 doesn't have a Backup folder. The ATX 2013 Server file does have a backup file, but it's frikkin huge and appears to be by date. That one was empty and I did a copy-paste from my backup, but no files appear in the window when I click on restore files. i did not change the default location to backup. In 2014 the backups are in the 2014 server folder
  6. Thought I had it covered. One thing I did want was to clean up the drive because it was cluttered with a bunch of crap that had accumulated over the years. I'm only restoring what I need. But I'm having issues with iDrive now. On chat with technical support
  7. Ugh, last Thursday I got the dreaded blue screen of death on my main computer, the one that functions as my server. My IT guy thought it was a software issue, he did manage to get it booted and I ran out & got a groovy 2TB external hard drive to back the whole HD up to. Then while in his care video card bites it. That was the problem. So I don't get the computer back until Tuesday afternoon, HD clean. Been reloading programs since then. Turns out he didn't seem to copy the lovely Program Files folder. Ya know, the one with the last 3 years tax data. But hey, I've got an online backup system too. So this whole afternoon I've been trying to get the 2012 data restored. It's almost downloaded now. I'm leaving for a conference Saturday and am not coming back for a week. Network isn't quite up yet.
  8. I couldn't get through on any lines yesterday, even at my super secret after 5 pm PST call time. The absolute worst day to call is after a holiday weekend!
  9. The info used in the get transcript system is probably from credit reports. When I tried the system to get my own, it asked about old addresses, what company I had a mortgage with in 2002, stuff like that. Some of it I actually had to look up. The answers to some of the questions (all are multiple choice)was 'none of these' which was an option for all of the questions. So my thought is that the ID thieves had credit reports. The anthem database wouldn't have the info necessary to get through the ID verify. its telling also that they were able to get into accounts about 50% of the time. And what could they get? All of your wage & income data, and prior years AGI, plus your spouse's SSN & name. stuff that is very helpful in filing fake tax returns.
  10. QB requires the latest version if you use their payroll, and I have one client that does. To open a file, QB requires you have at least as new a version as the client file you are trying to open. At least this year the client gave me their third user license so I didn't have to buy the ^}#%] program. intuit, how do I hate thee? Let me count the ways.
  11. I've had E&O since about 2005, costing this year $750. I do have a lot of coverage for the size of my practice, but I also keep high auto limits plus an umbrella policy. No earthquake or flood, although I consider both each year. I do not want to be used and do like being able to call with any question. It's been nice for the comfort letter problem (just got a request for one of them yesterday in fact).
  12. If the calcs show the person is getting a refund, the IRS doesn't bother to send letters. Why would they?
  13. Yes, I had a client do this and it took a while for the IRS to track down the payment when I made the mistake of treating it like an extension payment.
  14. Mine lags when my CPU or memory usage is high. Happens either when some update or something is running in the background or ATX is bleeding memory. If the latter, I'll shut down & restart the program or reboot the computer. If the former, get on the iPad & wait for what ever is running to finish or look for what it is and shut that down. i hate the autosave thing & cursor.
  15. I got the last nonprofit extension done this afternoon, and then went to pick up a pass to a free screening I won to "Tomorrowland". Scheduled my car to go into the shop to get a couple of recall items fixed so it will be good to go to drive to Vegas for the CSTC conference, where I am taking a class in nonprofits. Back to my regularly scheduled 4 hours a day, 3-4 days a week workweek!
  16. I billed almost 15 hours yesterday. BILLED! Now I'm trying to get a frikkin notice cleared up; the never ending audit. the original returns were so screwed up (new SSMC client) that the only way to unwind the whole thing was to send in a return to amend to joint. This was going to save them about 4k anyways. First, after I send in the 1040-X to the exam unit with copious explanations of all the issues, next correspondence is an NOD. I call on it, and the agent says that the mail room probably sent it to the amended returns unit instead of exam (even though that was where it was addressed to.) had POAs on both clients, and then voila! We find it reported under the spouse that wasn't under exam. So I fax in a not her letter explaining they had to link the two accounts. finally get a notice saying the 4k refund was coming. Then a few days ago get a new notice billing the spouse under exam for 3k. Call IRS and apparently wife has a W2c on the books. Ya know how you are only supposed to fill out the boxes that have changed? So what changed was the wages, SS wages & tax, & Medicare wages & tax. So what ever dumb ass entered it, put zeroes in the boxes that didn't change. 11k+ withholding vanishes. audit recon I guess. What a frikkin mess.
  17. Talked to someone from another board right away. Might have some more questions but I hope to get it done tonight. Today was as bad as tax season, and it ain't over yet.
  18. OMG! I think I can use the emoticons now on the iPad! Let's try. I'm going
  19. Client that always filed an EZ just got over the limit and I have to file the full 990. I haven't done one of these since the big changes occurred and I really need some questions answered/clarified. The org is on it's second extension already and it's due Friday. anyone with experience I could talk to?
  20. It appears my client may gave checked the wrong box on when they applied for an EIN. I just went to file their very first 990-N and the website says that EIN is not eligible to file the postcard. Does anyone have any clues what to do?
  21. My computer does the same wonky script thing on certain websites, like the EDD page where I input the quarterly wage reports. I'll try checking my font size too, since I probably increased it due to old eyes.
  22. Desktop & laptop are in my offices. The iPad travels around the house. I'm on my front porch as I'm typing this. That's why I read most of my forums on the tablet.
  23. Since I read this mostly on my iPad, hovering isn't an option. I've never reported a post. But I had no idea the share post icon was there until you mentioned it and I looked for it. is the different greyscale the only option with this software? btw, it is much improved than the first version!
  24. Yes, it's definitely a line 7 situation with the 1099-R. But you see even on this board how varying the answers are. 3rd party sick pay on W2 does qualify for EIC.
  25. I've gotten CP2000 notices for SE tax even when the amount WAS listed in Box 3, so don't feel bad. Stupid tax is right.
