Maybe she took out loans that went directly to the school?

He had to have checked that the hubby was a real estate pro ; MFS doesn't allow rental losses otherwise. And with two separate returns, if you don't check that the other spouse is itemizing, you can have one spouse with a standard and the other itemizing. Oh, and TX is a community property state bet he missed that too.

Start with one return, best to use the citizen. Amend to add the spouse's income and expenses.

Rental Property Managed by a Property Management Co

Active participation doesn't require 500 hours. It's much less of a standard to meet than material participation. -
Maryland Comptroller cuts off returns from 11 more tax preparers

It's refreshing to see a taxing authority stepping up in advance to halt tax fraud, rather than after the fact audits. -
Does anyone use an alternative location for data and/or backup?

IDrive was one of the few that encrypt to HIPPA standards which is required of CA CPAs. When I started looking at online backups, I had already read a lot of complaints about Carbonite, like the program data issue. -

I use iDrive, you can select any folders for backup. My entire program data file backs up since I'm not sure which folders are the returns and which are other stuff. When I had a crash last spring, I was able to easily restore all my ATX files except for one year. The damn file was so big, it wouldn't restore. Luckily I did have it ghosted onto another drive and tech support was able to get the data back where it was supposed to be. I think the weird year was 2013. -
There's a post that addresses this on the official ATX board.

If she has a child she can file HOH, otherwise it's MFS. Sorry.

So sorry to hear about your mom, too. Always during tax season, it seems.

Pete was nearly 14, and last year it was Tasha who I got in the same week back in 2002. Still around is Pete's twin brother, Repete. And Spot, my feral, and CJ, who my ex dumped on me. Plus Sweetie Pie, my EXTREMELY elderly dog - I have no idea of her age, but she showed up in 2005. Already old. My other dog died last July (yes it's been one after the other but I had a lot of seniors) and in November I went to the shelter and got Tiggy, a pit bull that's as bouncy as Tigger in Winnie the Pooh. And goofy, smart, and the instigator of many Viscous Pit Bull Attacks....most of which involve much licking

Many of mine drop off or send e-docs, but yesterday a couple who had always come in even though they live a good 40 miles away, brought in their 8 week old puppy. So I interviewed them with a puppy on my lap, and we talked dogs while also talking taxes. It made my day. They even wanted to meet my new pup, a 45 lb wriggling jumpy ball of excitement pittie. Tiggy gets SO excited to meet people! I have to cage her because she likes people too much, not because she's a danger, lol.

I spent all day Friday at the vet with a kitty that took sick, put him to sleep yesterday and buried him today. Got a bunch of returns and even thinking about the 2k + vet bill isn't getting me up off the couch. I know you guys will understand. On a nice note, one of the clients I saw yesterday brought in their 8 week old Rotweiler puppy, and cute puppy was really welcome knowing what I was probably facing later in the afternoon.. This is is the third February in a row that I've had fatally ill kitties.

I got both my individual account and my preparer one. Didn't see any clients on my preparer one, though I have several clients with POAs. But I only have used them when calling in, might have to fax them.

I thought I was the only one that had the 'still in my pjs' problem!

I had my returns in the rollover manager disappear for awhile. Ended up opening 2014 and closing it, then closing & opening 2015 and they reappeared.

That's what email is for!

Dale Griffin, drummer of my fave band Mott the Hoople, died the same day as Glen Frey. He had early onset Altzheimer's. I bought tickets for The Who a year ago because I realized I'd never seen them. The show has been postponed twice now...hopefully I'll finally get to see them this May. We are getting of an age where age just catches up to us.

Not that I've been able to find. I've learned to live with them.

I'm well versed in this because of my same sex couples. RDPs still have to allocate community property. Pub 555 is a place to start. Also www.ftb.ca.gov

You can change the letter fonts. Open the letter, click edit, then select all, then pick your font! Then save. They'll ask if you want to save for just this client or all future letters.

ACA client assistance in deciding or stick to tax prep???
joanmcq replied to easytax's topic in General Chat
I taught a class on the ACA, and part of it was ways to make sure you get the subsidy. For SE people, there are a lot of ways....on my 2015 return, to qualify I simply have to put $500 into an IRA. for wage earners, not so easy, but those people likely get insurance through their job. The article talked about people with a million or two of assets....well to retire I'd have to have about a million in retirement assets. As as for helping people get insurance...I tell them where to go to get it and the possible penalties if you don't have it. A couple days ago I finished a return and told the young lady that she qualified for MediCal, and should sign up before Jan. 31. She was grateful for the information. -
2016 tax season work flow compared to 2015 tax season

Way up. I've filed my first return already, lots of SE clients coming in. Early! -
I use Medlin for payroll and just export the W2s from that program to the SSA website. Easy.
