I start right out with the 'You are going on extension'. Actually now I'll tell them how to file their own extension. And if they want, I'll set up an appointment for May. Otherwise, I really don't care if they call back.

I did extend the 2015 corp. yay..... I know they ran the income and expenses through the corp. But just talked to client and spouse still is working at W2 job - maybe keep him out of it.and then spin shop off into new corp in 2016. treat spouse hours as volunteer? Dunno at this point. This is a client with crappy organizational skills but a deep appreciation of what I do and pays my fee happily and gratefully.

In 2013 client sets up S-corp for his real estate biz (no he did NOT discuss this with me first!), and then in 2014 husband decides to quit his job and open a coffee shop. Everything for the coffee shop is run through the S-corp. client owns corp 100%. Coffee shop is split 50/50 between client & spouse. My first thought was s-corp owns a partnership. Can't have unequal distributions, and RE biz is just client's. There might be an issue with licensing too as far as non RE person owning corp that sells real estate. I don't know, I'm frazzled and just can't wrap my mind around it. And, of course, he never got me the stuff for 2014, so that return is really, really late. Maybe corp can be 75% client, 25% spouse? Anyone have any ideas how I deal with this?

Hey, for the medical and legal pot stores, they have to pay cash for everything because fed banking laws are such that banks won't touch them. The Board of Equalization has begged for some kind of system to be set up because the pot stores bring in bags of cash to pay the sales and excise taxes. Maybe if the government started taking bitcoins?

I've gotten hugs too! Maybe it's because I work out of my home...got cake last week too. And yeah, I've gained weight back again.

But how do you really feel about the subject, Rita? He didn't go into your backyard, did he?

I charge extra if I have to open 2012. May this be the last of them! God the program sucked that year.

I do have a bottle of wine I got from some clients early in the season: they brought 'uppers' - a 4 pack of energy drinks and 'downers' - the wine. I don't drink alcohol, so I'll have to pass that one on.

I dumped my old printer/copier/fax that had sheet feed problems and hadn't picked up from the tray in years. That one cost me $750 way back when. When I saw new ones that were faster going for under $150 at Christmas, I got a new one. Brother MFC 2700. Paid $129 for it. The toner cartridges don't have the same high capacity as my old HP ones did, but are a hell of a lot cheaper.

My clients that have been sending me high end (like artisan) chocolate have struck again. Moonlight Chocolatiers from St. John's Oregon. I am in utter bliss....

Thank you Catherine! Very good information to know. I've got three years to amend.....assistant is proforma-ing 2013 as I type this. At least now I can send him 2012.

Morning? I haven't been to bed yet!

Or if you are from western PA, yinz or you'uns works in place of y'all. I'd fit right in...at least in conversation. Texas, no way.

I'm amending a client's fed & NY return, but the MA return has only rental losses on it. Do I file the MA CA-6 if there is no change in MA tax? There aren't any instructions for this form and from reading it, it doesn't look like I need to file it. But I want to make sure!
-
Everything would be big enough to read at least! I'm sick of scrolling constantly because I've got the fonts blown up.
-
I'm telling anyone new that calls or emails that I can take them on but they would be going on extension. If they are ok with that, fine. My my returning clients that haven't sent in their stuff, or did it in the last week, well they already know form 4868 is their friend.

That's the dark underside of PTPs the sales guys never tell clients about.

I have a classmate from my undergraduate days who not only made it through undergrad with no loans, but also med school. Even in those far off days, that was a feat. But she's been sitting pretty ever since.

I first heard of the MFS student loan thing when one of my newly married couples came back to me to change to MFS because of the student loan marriage penalty. One spouse is just out of school, so not so great salary yet. The other makes a decent, but not outrageous salary. They pay a little bit more in tax MFS (and under community property the salaries are split in half, not like the example above. But the loan payments are much lower, and as a young couple starting out and trying to buy a house - and house prices here are going through the roof again...for a few years the loan payment makes life a little bit easier. But it I'm doing more MFS this year than in my whole time as a tax pro.
-
Damn, I just did an MFS/MFJ worksheet because this couple keeps income separate and they want to see how much of the tax is generated by each. So all of a sudden, MFS is lower by a substantial amount. Think it might have something to do with the AMT fix that through for 2014. MFS requires so much more work in ATX. And I was about to shove this one off my desk. I'm doing several MFS already because of student loan repayment schedules and high medical....more than I've done in all my years of doing tax. Argh! I just want to get the damn things done at this point! Why do I have to be frikkin meticulous at this point!

Or at least is open for business.

Hah, last night I watched TWO more episodes! And did a puzzle, real a little while and was asleep before 2am.
