Well, at least now I know why. But is it CA not allowing all returns, or just ATX? If its all returns, then why be pissed off? Or don't get pissed off until you know its not CA to be pissed off at!
-
Whooo Hooo! we're off and running! Hey, I mentioned it to my supervisor and she's never even USED ATX (she's been using Proseries) and she's interested in both the investment and the software!

Jack, can I come to your house? No ones home to cook for me and chinese won't deliver unless its over $20. At least the client I had tonite (first efile!) paid cash, so I COULD order chinese. Or just heat up soup. *sigh*

You can take a deduction IF it was documented correctly, but in the year of donation, not now. does he have a qualified appraisal? Did he transfer the property? The fact that it was still on his land is irrelevant, as long as title to the building transferred. Does he have a receipt? I did get one of these through audit, but it has to be done correctly. The fire department has to have complete control over it; no retrictions on how long or what they do to it (sometimes they won't burn it, but just punch a lot of holes etc). These donations have failed in TC cases where for example, the donor was going to have the lot cleared anyways and stipulated it had to be burned within 4 months, etc.

Me either. Especially since I wanna be an investor. And Maine is lovely in the summer (well, ya gotta wear a lotta bug repellant in the woods, but). And Aroostoock is lovely although I did just look on a webcam and it looks a mite bit chilly right now!

Or, even better, you get a POA and YOU send the response. Then the client won't sign anything until they agree.

I like the idea of shareholder meetings. With a small start up, you'd have to have them...just not during tax season!
-
I'm interested too; you got me especially when you knew how to make the forms take up less space (can you tell I'm a techie..NOT). One thing I don't like about ATX is just how big the program files are; and how sloooow a big return (like mine!) opens. And who doesn't want to be part of a start up out here in CA?
-
I think they would like us to jump to Profx; CCH owns it and doesn't it cost about 5 grand? It IS a good program though!

Brand new IRS 'clarification'. 2008-? The numbers of the announcements are running together. Results of being at my tax update class all day!

I've got new clients coming in that need back years filed, as well as 2007. Like the big mess of the stolen IRA. At least her 2006 return will be easy!
-
We like you here too! But for all the newbies here, remember this board was created by ERC on his own dime when the official ATX board closed last year. So don't forget to donate to keep us all going!

New client comes in. A few years ago she was in a bad accident and an old friend helped to care for her. This so-called friend got her financial data, set up joint accounts, stole her identity, transferred clients other accounts to the joint account, and robbed her blind, including rolling most of her IRA into a new account, taking at $100K+ distribution and fleeing to Texas. She didn't look at her statements, and didn't know anything was up until her checks started bouncing. Turns out multiple credit card accounts were also opened, and thief even got mother's money which was in a joint account with the daughter. Police report is filed, but Vanguard issued 1099-Rs for the distribution. Police have tape of thief's voice authorizing distributions. What to do? Even though taxes were withheld she owes over $13K, including early w/d penalties. On another board, it was suggested that since she did not authorize the distributions, nor get the money, she should not have to pay taxes on it, or penalties. The only money she has control of is the withholding, which IMHO she should get back. What to do?

"Frm the LA Electronic Filing Handbook---After the return has been prepared the LA8453 will be used as an information only document. Preparers are prohibited from allowing taxpayers to sign a blank tax return. Beginning Filing Tax Season 2007, Louisiana will accept PIN (Personal Identification Number) in lieu of LA8453." Doesn't this mean the LA 8453 isn't required and since a PIN is used, not necessary for efiling?
-
I haven't tried yet either (no returns are done yet). But maybe you can't create an efile until efile is open on the 14th?
-
Do you need IE 7.0 to do that multi tab thing?

Never a bonehead question from Monkeyman! Its nice to be able to turn around the help function.

I have sucessfully fought a 1099 on constructive receipt; however, the taxpayer did get a letter from the issuer of the 1099 that although the check was prepared in December, because their offices were closed the last two weeks of the month, the taxpayer could not pick it up before January. Of course, then the income is higher the next year...

They 'automatically' signed me up for automatic renewals. I got the email that they were renewing me the day they did it (and I hadnt checked my email that day). I was planning on switching to McAfee because Norton slowed down my system too much last year. When I went in to check, I disarmed the auto renewal on my account. But I didn't put it there. Oh well, will change next year.

My HP 3330 just gave up the ghost (all in one and the scanner bed died; still works as a printer) and I just got a LaserJet M2727. Much faster and it has a much higher per month rating, which is why the 3300 died; I guess it wasn't meant for what I put it through during the season!

"If this does / is in effect you may want to check if the consent will be required for any taxpayer you are efiling with ATX or Taxwise in 2009, since starting this year, the company will retain all of the client's information that is being efiled and it will be accessible by anybody working in the Georgia customer service/tech support division. In prior years ATX was always very careful about protecting clients information and all senisitive information i.e. SSN, account numbers etc... were data stripped and not accessible by customer service/ tech support. All information efiled starting Jan. 11 will be viewable by any of their customer service staff." This is not good news. What purpose does this serve? Why should customer service/tech support have access to any of my client's info, especially if I am not, for example, sending a problem return to tech support?
-
And that's just the state. Wait til the IRS gets ahold of them.
-
I find it interesting that for the last 8 months any ATX employee had to come here 'undercover' and now you're all here and have 'outed' yourselves. What's with the turnaround, besides anyone that is now an 'ex' employee?

Actually this is really that all the income goes into the joint account and one used to pay all the bills (write the checks out of the joint account) until computerized bill pay came along, and now the other one does it because its more like surfing the internet than paying bills. I've actually advised unmarried couples that if they want to technically be right, the one that wants to deduct (higher income) should pay mortgage, and the other one pay the auto payments and utilities or whatever. But these folks really just pool everything. the incomes were more disparate a few years ago (I'm working on 2004-2007) but are about equal now. they have a second account for the soon to be rental, and all bills for that home renovation are coming out of there.

New clients filing back taxes. Both are on mortgage, both are on deed. Only account is a joint bank account. Previously, they prepared their own taxes and one took all the interest and taxes and the other claimed the standard deduction. With the two only having one joint account, I think the best I can do is split the deductions by percentages of income. What say y'all? Currently, the returns are pretty simple, but in 2007 they bought a new house and the old one will be rented in 2008, so I will have the same issues on the rental property.
