  1. I have mine set to ask to hold, and ask to release, and have had no problems whatsoever.
  2. I dont' have a problem at all with the 8948. But all of a sudden, my special worksheet for RDPs, even when checked, won't print the client or filing copy. It used to!
  3. I saw her on TaxProExchange!
  4. My head is swimming in COD and community income splits. Please. Just one return with no COD. Please?
  5. oooh, bad enough to get caught for the cig and sales taxes, but selling unstamped cigs? Oh, I wouldn't want to be in his shoes. He should be happy if they only get him for the sales taxes. I'm sure they got the vendor's records and went after everyone in Ohio. In CA the taxes on cigs are over $2/pack and then there is the sales tax. Big bucks and easy to trace. It's not just Ohio that's looking for internet tobacco sales.
  6. Parenthesis = loss. Goes on Form 6781.
  7. You can set up to charge by the entry on Sch D, 8949. It's one of the options on the invoice.
  8. Listed asset logs are really a pain except for vehicles. Ok, here I am on my biz computer. Do I log out if I check my personal email, which sometimes contains biz emails since I only got my own biz email last year? I need to make a personal copy or fax, but almost all of the time my copier/printer/fax is used for biz. Do I log the time I printed directions to a party from the printer usage? That's why a consistent biz use on these types of assets isn't a flag to me. 100% biz use? I ask questions, like, do you have another computer for personal? A vehicle is another story altogether. I lecture people on the proper way to keep vehicle records and have been known to slap clients upside the head with mileage logs before I hand them out.
  9. It has to do with CA AGI, which is computed on the Sch CA-NR. If the CA AGI is above the filing requirement, then you have to file. No easy $$ figure.
  10. I've got a 2010 return in my queue, so I'm hoping it can be e-filed!
  11. Ditto on what jainen said. FWIW, I do rent a room and do take the miniscule portion of insurance, taxes, etc that pertains to the rented bedroom. From what I've read concerning B&Bs, you can only attribute the bedroom and other bathroom to the rental. Any shared space, and this includes having to walk through that room to get to the kitchen, is personal use. No deductions attributable to personal use.
  12. Bathing is one of the daily living activities that qualifies for the LTC to be medically deductible. You just need to have the Dr. certify at least one more. Is there a reason your stepsister says he cannot be left alone? I feel your pain. And it's compounded when his 'blood' relative is taking advantage. Have you possibly considered filing elder abuse?
  13. CA has a credit for taxes paid to another state. It just gets wonky with OR & AZ; if the income is in those states, you take the credit on the nonresident return. Wierd!
  14. And hopefully she was filing an 8606 all along! And Lion is right, the institution has NO idea of what the basis is in the IRA. IRA 1099-Rs always have 'taxable amount not determined' checked. It is the taxpayer's requirement to track basis, and report it to the IRS by filing the 8606. You can reconstruct basis from the 5498's received each year and a copy of the tax returns filed, since she began making the nondeductible contributions. Have fun!
  15. yes, because if she took it out a day before 59.5, it's a code 1.
  16. I've had luck with audit recon, but mainly where the 'cheapo preparer' was supposed to be taking care of it. Maybe saying he assumed the 'pro' did it correctly? It's hard to justify ignoring IRS notices, but simply 'taxpayer was not able to submit supporting documentation' can get the audit recon.
  17. I was wrong about Circular 230, but CPAs in CA are under about the same standards as HIPPA. So security is very important to me.
  18. I used to depreciate it, but started expensing at least 5 years ago.
  19. I havne't had this problem either.
  20. The tax would have been assessed when he missed the dates to respond to the notices. Once the date to file a tax court petition has passed, the tax is automatically assessed. You can try for an audit reconsideration.
  21. DOMA means you can't file joint same sex returns.
  22. I just lost a client because I wasn't sure if I could e-file same-sex couples this year. I know I can attach a PDF with the community property split with the MEF program...yay! although that will add another step since my customized form is a 'spreadsheet' in ATX. Or will the spreadsheet e-file? I haven't tried to create an e-file yet, but will likely be working on my first RDP couple today. Also, Michael this one is for you: will there be a way to put a flag in the return that it is filed under CCA201021050? I'm worried about the withholding not matching up and creating errors.
  23. And no exclusion for non-earned income. But he can take the FTC if the income is taxed where he is living.
  24. Burning Man tickets are being drawn by lottery today and tomorrow. Maybe none of you know how antsy this is making me, but it's sure hard to concentrate on taxes!
  25. That's the problem I had with transfering over 2005 files. They just disappeared. So I've kept the programs on my laptop to do old years. But apparently I went backwards in years installing the programs to see which ones would work. If you start with the oldest, and then install in that order, it seems you won't have issues. I just checked and I didn't import the files for 2007 or 2004 either, but I can't remember if I had the disappearing files issues with those years as well, or if I just gave up.
