  1. Or maybe the former preparer hasn't heard of Circ. 230 yet....
  2. Congrats on becoming a Master! And yes, we never stop learning in this profession (if we do, we should retire), and no one person can know it all.
  3. I agree with John. It appears to be a nonqualified moving expense paid for by the company. I had a similar situation this year where the new employer paid to help the home sell. Taxable wages. But in your case, it was for a deductible expense, so IMHO you should still be able to take the benefit of the mortgage interest and RE tax deductions.
  4. I thought he might be doing better since I saw a few posts from you on other boards, which I took to mean you put your mind back to tax, but haven't had a chance to send an inquiry. I'm pleased to hear he is doing better! MUCH healing energy sent your way....
  5. stress isn't bad. Just working a bazillion hours a day, 7 days a week.
  6. Ugh. I've never used EFTPS, and have no idea how to walk someone through it. But since I have to mail them the returns, maybe the prospect will look easier tomorrow or Friday. Is it easy for an individual to set up?

    My ATX

She had me go in and delete cookies and temp internet files. They totally redid the website for MyATX, and apparently I haven't been on there since they did it because it looked nothing like the old one, at least on the splash page.
  8. Ok, been up since 10:45pm last night (my sleep schedule is really whacked right now) and as you can imagine, I'm kinda fried. Is there any way to do a direct debit if paper filing? I've rarely had people want to direct debit period, but one of my RDPs wants it all to go direct. I don't think I've done an all-nighter since college....and my 30 year reunion is in June!

    My ATX

spent an hour yesterday with tex upport (remember him?) and while they were determining my SIMPLE problem required an override, she helped me reset my browser. After I posted, I got in with Chrome just fine.
  10. In your situation, no, it won't qualify. I was responding to jainen's comment that any group plan is subsidized.

    My ATX

I can't get into My ATX either through the program or by entering www.myatx.com Anyone know what's up? I get this runntime error: Runtime Error Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine. Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off". <!-- Web.Config Configuration File --> <configuration> <system.web> <customErrors mode="Off"/> </system.web> </configuration> Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's <customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL. <!-- Web.Config Configuration File --> <configuration> <system.web> <customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/> </system.web> </configuration>
  12. I disagree with jainen in that ANY group plan is a 'subsidized' plan. If I have an option as an SE person to join a group plan through CalCPA or another professional org, is that subsidized? How about the High-Risk Insurance Pool? The only thing with COBRA is that you can't get booted off for pre-existing conditions, which anyone over the age of 30 probably has. Even when employed, I paid much higher premiums than the 21 year old male in the next cubicle. They even jumped mid-year the month I turned 50.
  13. I've already been taking out the non-deductible portions; something I never really worried much about since in most of Sacramento, the non-ad valorem portions are tiny. Mine are $14. BUT, just a little farther south in Elk Grove, where they have Mello-Roos assessments...ouch! Over $1300 on one property. Gotta make everyone bring in their damn statements now; even online they only report the special assessments for the last year, and although they don't change much, is the FTB going to squabble if I'm off a few dollars?
  14. Good thoughts and healing energy to Don, and strength to you KC.
  15. Garbage in, garbage out. BTW, their error message system sucks. God forbid you forget to enter your occupation...but I had an audit on a return where the taxpayer forgot the decimal when entering federal withholdings. had over a million in 'withholding' on 40k wages. NO error message. I tested the program just to see.
  16. Yeah, but I didn't set this up; it's a new client with the SIMPLE already in place. I've already advised him that terminating the SIMPLE and starting a SEP would be a better fit since he would like to maximize his retirement contributions.
  17. Yeah, I know this. But someone on another listserve said this was not a problem for the nonelective employer contribution, and it should be deductible. The employer has the choice of either making an up to 3%match of employee contributions or a mandatory 2% of compensation contribution, not based on any employee action. I can't find anything in the pubs, any of my research, for this particular situation. And the frikkin ATX worksheet does not address the nonelective contribution whatsoever, only the employer match, which is an entirely different animal. I never consider SIMPLE plans for sole props without employees because you can ALWAYS get a better deal with solo (k)s or SEPs, depending on what the other circumstances are.
  18. I have a client who wants the MFJ split simply to assess the tax burden each is putting on the other because of very disparate incomes, separate property, inheritances, etc. For doing my RDP returns, I need to input so that when I split the returns, I can easily discard what doesn't belong on the single return I'm preparing from the joint CA. For my plain old single filers, I don't bother.
  19. On another board, a FL preparer said this was rampant down there; he had many ID theft cases where his clients had already had returns filed under their SSNs. The clients have to paper file after reporting the ID theft and get the ID theft PIN. After that, their SSN(s) can't be used without the PIN. This report is from FL too.
  20. No employee or employer matching is allowed, but his plan is set up with a nonelective employer contribution. This is 2% of earnings regardless of any employee contribution, and must be made or the plan is out of compliance. The employee doesn't even elect to be in the plan.
  21. New client has a pretty profitable Sch C biz (50k profit) along with a W-2 job. Set up a SIMPLE for the Sch C, and maxed out his 401(k) at his employer. The SIMPLE plan has him making a nonelective employer contribution of 2%. ATX is not allowing a deduction for the employer match on line 28, although from what I've read, although the 'ee contribution is denied since he maxed his 401(k), the nonelective contribution should still be allowed. I actually cannot find a place to designate a nonelective contriution on the line 28 worksheet. Am I over looking something?
  22. I still have new clients coming in! I'm just hoping to get them out as fast as I get them in.
  23. Various is used when there are multiple purchases of a stock and one sale. Do you really want to list all of the dividend reinvestments as separate purchases when the stock or fund is sold in one lump?
  24. Less deductions? No making work pay credit?
  25. Even if you type, the default for Various is ST. You have to tab over and change it to long. I guess it has to default to something. I suggest also going to the detail sheet and tabbing down. I have a small amount of sales for which the client sent me an excel file, so I'm going to practice with that one.
