ATX can't help me and I can't seem to see what is wrong in my permissions. I am the administrator for the computer, but it says that I don't have permission to save in C:ProgramFiles(x86)ATX2011Import. Does anyone know how I can remedy this? I have been trying to find something on the Internet, but nothing seems to work. I want my XP back. Thanks! Bonnie

Thank you so much. He has been doing his exercises. It is very painful still and then he has to lie down for awhile. He tried to do too much today and will have to back off. He is trying to wean himself off of the pain pills, but I think that he is finding out that it is too soon. One strange side effect of the surgery, is that his defibrillator doesn't stick out of his chest as much now as before the surgery. We go get that checked next week, so I will ask them if they know how it got moved.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Thanks to all of you for your help. I don't know what I would do if I didn't have someone else to bounce questions off of. My husband should get home from the hospital tomorrow. The shoulder surgery went well. He is in quite a bit of pain and the recovery period is long. We didn't know that he won't be able to drive or lift anything heavier than a coffee cup with his left hand for six weeks. That is going to seriously make my life more difficult during tax season, since he did all of my errand running and now I will have to take him to rehab and more doctor appointments. I'm really glad that I moved my office home so my hours are more flexible.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING....To anyone that sees this
NECPA in NEBRASKA replied to Elrod's topic in General Chat
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone left! My stepson's National Guard unit comes home from Afghanistan tonight, so we are very thankful and hope that they don't have to be deployed again for at least a couple of years. -
Thank you for all of your thoughts. Bstaxes, I hope that you recover quickly. Margaret, I am in awe of your ability to run a marathon. It is for a great cause. Gail, I hope that the ablation works well for your husband. My step-father is going to be shocked through his groin in a couple of weeks for a-fib. They don't know if it will work or for how long. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I'm still here, trying to get caught up on old stuff and getting ready for the move. Spent the night in the hospital last Tuesday after a bumpy ride in the rescue squad from the office. It was not a heart attack, but they had no answers for the very high blood pressure and terrible chest pain. I don't have high blood pressure. I am using an inhaler before exercise, to see if that will help. If I continue having the pains, I will have to have a heart cath to make sure that I don't have blockages that don't show up on the stress test.

That is terrible! I would be petrified if we had to go bare for six months. With our luck, something would go wrong with my husband's ICD in that time period.

I will also be trying to find health insurance after our COBRA runs out next year. My husband will probably have to go on our state's health insurance plan for people with illnesses and I will have to find something for myself and our son. I'm sure that it will be worse than the $1,100 per month that we pay now.

John, This guy is a real gem. He told me that another CPA refuses to do any more work for him, without a big retainer. I can't believe that he thought that anyone would do any work for him. He said that he wanted all of the loss to go to my client, but I'm not touching a corporate return. There were no payroll taxes, because this business never did anything, according to him. My client had to pay tons of credit card debt, because she is an officer. I doubt that she was truly a shareholder, because she was not issued any stock certificates and didn't pay for any stock. The guy and woman just stuck her on as a shareholder and officer to get themselves off the hook, from what I can see. I want to make sure that the debt that she has paid is not considered a gift, so that I can at least take a business bad debt or theft loss without having to produce K-1s.

They were incorporated in Nebraska. They show her as the President, with his girlfriend as an officer in 06 and added him in 08. My client did not sign the secretary of state tax returns. He incorporated it himself without an attorney according to the articles. Now I have to find out the fed ID # and if they are truly an S corp.
-
I will check with the Secretary of State. He claims that it was an S Corp, but I will find out for sure. Thanks! She went to an attorney before, but she is adamant that she doesn't want to press charges or have her family find out. I will keep on her. Thank you so much Jainen and John for the advice. I feel really bad for her, but I also don't want to prepare any corporate returns, since I will never get paid and I don't trust the records.

An elderly client signed a couple of papers and thought that she was co-signing a loan for a long time family friend. A huge mistake! As it turns out, she may well be a shareholder in a business that never got off the ground. It had a few sales, but mostly incurred debt. She pulled out most of her retirement money to pay off creditors in 2009 and 2010 and received a 1099C for 2010. Tax returns have never been filed, because the friend can't pay anyone to prepare them. She finally had him call me yesterday and he told me that he doesn't know where the legal paperwork is, but that there were originally three shareholders and that he and his ex-girlfriend broke up and signed the entire business over to my client. I asked if there were any attorneys involved, and he said that he wrote up the transfers himself. He claims that there was no stock issued to my client, but who knows? Even if someone will prepare the returns, she is going to get hit with penalties for non-filing of the K-1s for three years. I don't think that I can call it a business bad debt, unless the returns are filed. It is very difficult to talk to her, because she is horribly embarrassed and doesn't want her family to know what has happened. She also feels bad for him, because he is injured and can't work. Boo Hoo! He started crying on the phone yesterday and I about hung up. If she takes him to court, she won't get anything, because he has nothing. This has already cost her close to $100,000. Does anyone know if I can get her any tax relief? She is not insolvent yet. Thanks!

Thanks! I stopped taking credit cards last season, because it was costing me a fortune to only have two or three people a year use them. I don't have a website yet and need to look into an affordable one, since my husband was turned down for disability again so we have to wait over a year for a hearing. The attorney says that there is no way that he doesn't qualify, but it was a pretty big setback for us. It may help our son get financial aid for college though. That is great that you have drop off points for clients. Thanks for the help.

It's official, I am moving my office home in a couple of months. It is really gong to be different, but there will some definite advantages. I won't have to run to the office really late at night again, because their power went out and knocked my VPN offline. We built a separate shed for storage and supplies and will wall off part of the downstairs for security and some privacy. It will be tough to convince my clients that they have to make appointments if they want to see me, but hopefully, they will adapt. Do you have a PO Box or do you have everything mailed to the house? I am getting a locking dropbox, but I'm not sure how I will do pickups, if I am not home. They may have to wait until someone is there. Thanks for all of the great advice. Bonnie

Congratulation on the beautiful babies! I am so happy for you and your wife. I don't know how you find time to host this website, but I'm very grateful that you do. Good luck! Bonnie

I already have it, just because a few clients have always come to my house. -

My husband does want to rip up the carpet and put down ceramic from the garage door to the office area. He will also have to replace the railing outside that I backed into one winter. Most of my clients have been with me so long that I can't imaging that they will be too upset. I had to work from my dining room in the middle of March a few years ago when the idiot above my office set her beauty shop on fire. That alone is a good thing. There have been fires in two of the three buildings that I have been in since I went on my own. -

Thanks for the great responses. I've thought about moving my son's computer room downstairs and using that bedroom for the office. Unfortunately, my husband doesn't want people walking on the carpet through the house with their shoes on. He is very OCD about cleaning and since he does the cleaning now, I won't fight him. I will have a separate phone line since I will keep my office number and already have nice office furniture. I will have to change how I schedule appointments so that they don't come early. Maybe some will just drop off their info. It will be a huge change and I will really miss the interaction with the other tenants in my building. Maybe the landlord will feel really sorry for me and cut me a deal since there are so many vacancies. I won't have any excuse to buy new clothes now. Darn! -
It looks like I am going to either find another job or move my business home to save money. My husband was denied disability the first time so we now have an attorney that says he qualifies, but that it could be awhile before we get the second approval or denial; then we have to wait for a hearing. Do you all have waiting rooms or how do you keep your clients from showing up when you already have a client there or just simply aren't open? I will be in our lower level, which is one big room at this time. I wish that I could afford to build on, but it's now possible right now. Do you have any recommendations for secure dropboxes? I would really like to have a safe way to leave finished work, but will probably try to use the mail more. I know that this is a stupid question, but if I don't reimburse the corporation for a home office, can I still deduct my office computers without keeping a log? I have two other personal computers upstairs. The only bathroom that we have downstairs is a large finished laundry room. Is that really tacky or do I send clients that are able to climb upstairs? My sister says that it is going to look totally unprofessional to have my desk and file cabinets downstairs when I have a big screen and sofas down there. I take very few new clients and I really don't think that my current clients will be upset, but I could be wrong. We are going to have to get rid of a bunch of furniture to make this work at all. I'm sure that I will have to put up a new shed for storage boxes and supplies. I'm pretty bummed out about it, because I love my office space and the people in my building, but it will save at between $6 and 7K a year. Thanks for any advice any of you have. Bonnie

That is very sad, KC. Thank you for sharing that with us. It is very sad that the company has gotten so large that they don't appreciate their long term employees.

It;s not the last day now. I just received an e-mail that they extended it until Friday, June 3.

Canadian Bequest received by client

That's what I am thinking, but I want to make sure that it's not coming out of an IRA or pension, before I tell the client anything. They are elderly and I don't want to confuse them.
