  1. Mine are coming in early, probably to beat the deadline in my letter which is next month. Unfortunately, I've never seen so many missing 1099Rs in all my years of practice. Apparently the 2/17/14 deadline applies to these also. I try to get them to drop them off in my box, fax or email. I do not want to see people three or four times because I can't get a darn thing done.
  2. I just began using duplex and it does work on Nebraska and Iowa. I haven't prepared any other states yet.
  3. I do ask them in my client letter. I have a lot of older clients that just don't like anything on the Internet. Their grandkids are not a problem, they never want to see me and do everything by email.
  4. I love having a locking drop box now. I have managed to get some of my clients to just drop off, but most insist on seeing me. I don't take weekend appointments anymore and nothing after 6:30. It took me a long time to wean them from the weekend ones, but I don't think that I lost anyone over it. I just explain that I have to have some time to work when there is no one here and the phone isn't constantly ringing. Now if I could just get more of them to give me their email addresses so I don't have to wait until the next day to call them with questions.
  5. Is there somewhere to show him as a student?
  6. The problems at their airports extend all over the country. My son, works here at Delta, came home and said how sorry he feels for the passengers the past few days. (He doesn't normally feel too sorry for them, because he gets yelled at so much.) Even now that they are thawing out down there, the flights out are still clogged up. They had many planes coming into Omaha five or more hours late and then the planes couldn't go on, because the crews had been working for so long and they would have to book them on another flight or airline, only to have those flights get cancelled too. A lot of his friends fly for regional airlines and they are having a terrible time trying to get on flights to commute to where they are supposed to fly out of.
  7. Thank you Jack. Do you think that ATX will ever do anything about this problem?
  8. My niece goes to school in Myrtle Beach and said that they got a second snow day.
  9. I am going to have to ask her if she took any training. She wanted to write off Victoria's Secret and I told her that is out, but that her "stripper heels" should be OK. She won't be able to take mileage, because it is all commuting to the club. Thanks!
  10. QuickBooks for my corporation and clients that use it and for some most payroll. Medlin for general ledger and trial balance. I have used Medlin for payroll before, but I don't have any payroll now that isn 't already on QuickBooks. ATX for taxes and payroll filing.
  11. I really miss the snow here. It gets very cold and has been terribly windy, but no snow to go along with it. We used to get tons of snow when I was a kid. I guess I should quit complaining or we will get dumped on, but I like having different seasons. It was over 60 here in Nebraska this weekend. When I went to Clearwater in November, it was way nicer here than it was there on the beach.
  12. I don't have any returns is yet, and no appointments until the first week of February. I did efile a partnership on 1/13. I only have a couple of EITC returns, so most aren't in a hurry.
  13. I just downloaded Accuwage last night for the first time. It worked very well with Chrome. I hope there isn't something somewhere that says that I can't use Chrome, but I've been using it with the SSA for a few years.
  14. Thank you. He says that it is part of his child support.
  15. Thanks. That was what I told him, but he said his old tax preparer let him. His old tax preparer let him do anything that he wanted and has now passed away so he didn't have to worry about Circ 230. He had all kinds of personal stuff in the corp that I told him is not deductible. He will probably want to find someone new again.
  16. I have another twist, but I don't know if it matters who the check is paid to. My new client, 100% shareholder in an S corp has to reimburse his ex-wife for his kid's health insurance that is paid by her employer. It is group health taken out of her check. I am sure that it is pre-tax, because it's a large bank. Is he able to write the check to his ex out of the corporation and add it to his W2? Maybe I am just thinking about it too hard, but with the new changes from the ACA, I don't want to jump the gun. To make things worse, only one of the kids is allowed on his tax return. Thank you to anyone that chimes in.
  17. Thank you, Rich. I will tell her. She didn't dance when she was with the father. She lost her job and has not been able to find anything else that paid enough to support her. I am going to help her with a resume to see if we can get her back in a day job and still be able to support the two of them.
  18. My cutoff is March 17 before I put them on extension. Most of the returns that come in after that are complicated and need more time to be prepared anyway. There are a few easy ones that I will do for elderly clients after that, but most of them are just dragging their feet. They know that I can only be stretched so far and if they want a return prepared super fast, they can go to a big preparer. I don't take new clients off the street, just a few referrals and then kids and grandkids.
  19. I only file paper returns when I can't e-file. I only print the client copy. I was just trying to save some trees. I know that a lot of people give out CD's or PDF's, but most of my clients want a hard copy even if they already have a PDF. I guess I just have older clients. Thanks.
  20. Thanks, Tom. I'm trying to decide if it's worth it.
  21. Does anyone actually duplex their returns? I see that ATX says that it is not supported in 2011 or 12 and that the only way to duplex the organizers, is to print a PDF first and then print. I guess that's not a problem, but I was just wondering if it would be worth updating my HP 4200. It's really old and noisy , but still runs great. Thanks.
  22. Thanks for all of the help.I can't do the return for personal reasons. This is just a favor.I am protecting her, since she does not want her daughter's father or his friends to find out what she is doing. The job is legal, but he would have a fit and try to take her daughter. I don't care what she does as long as the child is fed and has a place to live. She is a good Mom and is trying to find a better job, but this pays pretty well and there aren't a lot of jobs around here that pay that well if you have no skills.
  23. This is a real question, so please don't flame me. I am trying to help a family friend figure out how to file her tax return. I won't touch it, because I know that she doesn't have records. She only works for tips and the bar does not issue 1099s or W2s. I don't understand it, because it is an international business. She does have to pay the club $50 per day that she works and $5 per dance. The other dancers told her that she can write off her spray tan, hair and makeup. I told her that was not correct, because even though she says it's just for the job, it's not. She wanted to take off mileage, but I told her that was commuting, no matter what the other girls say. I'm assuming that her costumes should be deductible, because I would hope that it's not customary to wear them. I really can't think of anything that she can deduct, besides her costumes and what she pays to work there. If anyone knows of any legitimate deductions that I should tell her about, please let me know. Thanks!
  24. I hate payroll too, but can't get rid of it yet. I just won't take on any new. I am going to finally get a passport so that I can travel more with my son. After our almost 20 year old cat passes away, his dad can go too.
  25. We've had two Scotties. Love them.
