We had to put our 20 year old wonderful cat to sleep on 6/6. It was a terrible loss and we still cry every day because he was an amazing companion and my client's love him. Yesterday we decided that we needed another cat and went home from the Humane Society with three kittens. They are so cute, naughty and loving. One is trying to learn to type right now. They cry when I lock them out of my office, but I am obviously going to have to harden up until they get a little older. I am so glad that we got them, because they do ease the pain just a little for all of us. My son just turned 20, so it has been very hard on him to lose the pet that he grew up with as we got him when Andrew was only 2 months old. I will have to train the new guys to be good little greeters, just like the great old-timer before them.

do you know I still get the retry server error?
NECPA in NEBRASKA replied to WITAXLADY's topic in General Chat
I just sent one. My program has been a mess all morning. I had already rebooted and it acted up worse than before. -
One difference would be if it were not retroactive and they had just forgotten to file payroll taxes, the paychecks would have been cleared. My cousin's wife didn't file or pay his payroll taxes for years, but the payroll checks were written and cleared in a timely manner.

I was getting the error yesterday, but it was too late to call them. I rebooted and the problem stopped. -
My son works for Delta and he got new lightweight hard-side luggage after finding out how difficult it is to handle a lot of suitcases and how they get handled. Now he says I have to get new luggage because it weighs a ton without my over packing and has terrible handles.

That was pretty amazing! My cat might have done that in his younger days. He was a huge cat and loved our son like nothing else.

I went to a Drake seminar this month. There are some very good points and it looks like a great program, but there was another preparer attending that was there to talk to them because of the issues that she is having with Nebraska and Iowa returns. These just began when she switched from Lacerte. She has contacted their tech support several times and they have not been able to help her. I know that they offer a lot with the program, but I do like the CCH research that is included in my Total Tax Office and I already have a website. I used a menu based program before ATX and I really prefer the form entry. In the sample return that was prepared on powerpoint I did see that Drake allowed the presenter to create an e-file without checking for the federal refund or prior payment.on the Iowa return. When I prepare one with ATX, I can't really miss it, because I'm looking at the form. They really did have some nice shortcuts, but you can't teach an old dog new tricks and I'm very comfortable with ATX. I had a good year, except for the one day that I was down for a few hours and had to call for a different tech. I hope that they get the server error fixed, because that was my biggest headache this year.

Congratulations!

I am ticked that I sent an email to my rep asking a question about my license and did not receive a call or a reply. Maybe he quit or something, but he was sure calling and emailing me constantly when I didn't renew until the end of the year.

I have not received anything. Drake has been calling me and I am going to go to a demo in town. I am very hesitant to change. I only had a couple of problems this tax season and I really use the research and the payroll reporting.

My 90 year old guy in CO is getting much worse, but refuses to let his family help him. I never get the right stuff and them he gets letters from the IRS and CO wanting more money. It stinks to get old, but it stinks more for me, because I have to deal with the letters and he doesn't realize that it's his fault. He won't send originals, because one year his whole package was lost by the post office. I doubt it because it was Express, he probably put it in a Goodwill box. He normally will send me two copies of the same huge 1099B or maybe a couple of random pages. I love him to death, but his family really needs to step in. I just have to always put him on extension to deal with the mess.

You are right, Jack I'm sure that I am too cheap. I am a big wimp. I don't want to scare away the people that I actually like and enjoy. I definitely try to start new clients at a decent rate, but so many of them are from families that I already prepare, that it is hard to charge the new ones a lot more than the old ones.

I am So happy to put this season behind me. I did not let it make me sick and shaking like I have in the past. I feel like I worked my my tail off and I know that I finished 35 more returns than I did last year when the due date was the 17th. I have not figured out yet how to make the 15th not be a terribly, stressful day. I guess it must be my client mix. There are some that have a nervous breakdown over an extension. No matter how many times I tell some of them to go to a larger firm, they keep coming back. I may just have to fire a couple of the ones that try to bully me into pushing to the front every year. I am so grateful to have this amazing board to go to for great advice and just to commiserate and rant .Having to close down my office when my husband got sick and moving it home has been hard, because I really miss my friends in my old building. Most of my old tax preparing friends have retired or gotten out of the business. One now works for a dentist and she says that she has never had a better spring. I feel like I've made some new friends here. Thanks to Eric and all of you who have helped me out or talked to me. Love the senses of humor, because I need more of that attitude. I feel like I don't answer enough questions, but I have a huge fear of being flamed if I'm wrong. I will be around here all year.

I have to miss it. My son invited me to take off and go out in the country with him at 2, but I will still be plugging away. He has an excellent camera, so at least I will see the pictures. -
This form doesn't appear to be calculating if you want to use anything but the 2013 taxes for 2014 estimates. I have had to calculate the tax manually when changing the income for 2014. I have not contacted ATX yet, because I am buried, but wanted to let anyone else that may use the form know. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but they have had trouble with this form in the past.

WHY do they do it, make early withdrawls from their 401Ks
NECPA in NEBRASKA replied to mrichman333's topic in General Chat
I have several that do this. They paid for their daughter's wedding, bought a motorcycles and cars, just stupid stuff. Then they get tons of 1099C's for credit cards. Gambling is a huge issue and means that I have to file a lot of out of state tax returns. -
Warning:Rant ahead! I am........... amazed at the number of married couples that apparently hate each other and don't bother to hide it when they come see me. I about jumped over my desk and punched them both out. I am tired, crabby and so don't want to hear them bitch and moan about each other and their problems. I have had several couples this year that were positively oozing hate or disgust when they came in. Suck it up until you get out of here and then go at it!

We don't even have four months any longer for tax season. By the time IRS opens up, then you have to wait for the 1099's. One of my Wells Fargo client's has had four amended 1099's already. Several of mine had problems even getting 1099R's. I am seriously exhausted.

Congrats! I am so far from done I could cry. I have a ton of easy ones left, but so many huge pains still. Why do I get such screwed up messes? Long time client marries someone with a sale of a foreign rental and cancellation of debt on another rental. She prepared her own returns before and said that nothing needs to be reported.
-
The KS return has changed this year and I may be going nuts at this late date. Client has farm rental and oil royalties in KS, they have paid estimates for years. When preparing Schedule S, it says to deduct rental real estate, etc from the Schedule E on line B10, Schedule S. Then on B20, it says to deduct the net modifications that are applicable to KS source income. I did and that gave me a 0% nonresident allocation % so they don't owe any KS tax. Is this even possible? I just feel like I must have missed a step or they are going to be very happy customers this year. Thank you!

Thanks. I also run into different dates with spouse's signature not being the same and sometimes not even close to the date the first one signed.I just don't know if it triggers something at the IRS if it's past the 3 days.
-
What do all of you do when you receive a signature form that is well past the 3 days before it's considered stockpiling? I received one today by certified mail that was signed 3 days before he mailed it and then took 2 days to get to me. Do you keep the date at the first date or change it to the received date and make note of when it was received? I know it's probably a stupid question, but I'm just trying to keep out of trouble in case of a compliance audit. Thanks!

We can't fix those that refuse to listen.
