Mom has basis in her IRA's and form 8606. She inherited son's with a small basis. I already had to manually put in the numbers on both 8606's. ATX says that filer is limited on one 8606. Do I just mail the return? There are 12 1099 R's and it amounts to a tax savings of $37. What a pain.

Well, you find out things accidentally sometimes.

I am very sorry for you, too. It seems like everything happens during this time of the year. Just get done what you can and don't wear yourself out too much. I'm trying to get corps done today and am way behind too. I wish that more people would just drop off their stuff and not NEED to see me. -

It is OK to cry. I still tear up when I think about my last two cats and one has been gone for 21 years. (He was an amazing guy!) Our pets love us unconditionally and are such great companions. I will grieve terribly when I lose any of the three that we have now, but they are worth it. They will help me, because I will probably lose my husband much sooner than we would like. Hang in there. I am really sorry. -

I am so sorry! Kitties are wonderful companions and I am so sorry that you are going through this, especially now when you are under so much stress. We went through renal disease with our wonderful Puddy for several years. He was just shy of 21 when he finally let us know when he had been loved enough and was ready to leave. We swore that we wouldn't have another pet, because we were too devastated, but now we have three of them. I'm thinking of you. -
I checked and line 13a was marked no, but I restored both boxes and marked the no again and it cleared up line 25. I guess there must have been an invisible checkmark in the yes box on 13a. Thanks!

I don't prepare many EITC returns, but these check boxes are bugging me. Yes is the only answer available unless I override the boxes. Do you always check yes, even if line 22, 23 and 24 do not apply? I could check "Does not apply" last year.

Terry, I feel your pain. I have the same problem, but our mail doesn't just end up at one address. Many times it is on the next street over with the same house number, but sometimes our mail goes to unknown places and just shows up in our door or mailbox. I am very much considering getting a PO Box up the street at The mailroom and see if that helps me get my client's mail on time. I have called and called many times to our post office, but all I hear is that they have a lot of subs that don't do their job. We would get our behinds kicked if we were this crappy at doing our jobs. I wish I had an answer for you. The person that gets your mail and keeps it is a jerk.

IRS urges pros to verify their EFIN activity
NECPA in NEBRASKA replied to Abby Normal's topic in General Chat
I did check mine out and it looked fine. The question about reporting your URL was new to me. Is that for anyone that uses a portal? I don't yet, but am considering it. My AFSB website has the capability of having a portal, but I haven't had the time to research the security or decide if another one is better. -

I have not been able to check mine either. I've seen on a lot of boards that they don't keep track for CPA's. I would like to know how I can check them. -
I totally understand. This is a place to come and talk to people who understand. I am so sorry for your loss. Give yourself some time to grieve and feel better. It is so hard to lose our pets. I still tear up when I think about our two cats that we've lost even though we have three new ones.

Congratulations! He's a good looking boy. I'm grateful for the three awesome ones that we have from my step-children, because I don't want our son to have any for a few years.

I have a huge L shaped desk with two (will be three) monitors. I have to see if there is any way that I can make a standing desk work. It would be nice not to sit so much. I do have my treadmill outside my door, and make sure that I use it pretty much every day for 30-40 minutes.

Clients are already driving me a little nuts
NECPA in NEBRASKA replied to Roberts's topic in General Chat
I've had a few kids text my landline and wonder why they didn't hear from me. They didn't think anyone still used landlines. I was dying at supper tonight because my son was talking about the old days when people had to memorize phone numbers. I also got phones for my OIH that have a do not disturb button. I push it whenever I don't want them to ring and they get my voicemail. What I really hate is when clients show up and I still have my pjs on. I am really going to have to start putting on my exercise clothes first thing, instead of running downstairs to finish something up before getting ready for the day. -
Nebraska moved theirs up to 1/31 also.

If it doesn't affect the SSA, I would only correct the state.

2016 tax season work flow compared to 2015 tax season
NECPA in NEBRASKA replied to JimTaxes's topic in General Chat
I'm still doing W-2s, 1099s and quarterlies. I hate payroll! I'm not taking tax appointments until Monday. I had a drop off of 12,13,and 14. ( They won't be done quickly) A couple current drop offs and some questions that will take me pretty much doing the returns without all of the information to answer. I'm still working on my letters. If my family members would stay out of the hospital, it would really help out. I did find out from ATX yesterday that I can use my laptop and remote in through my VPN without needing another license. That's great to know, but the wifi is public. At least I can work on the laptop and move it with a flash drive. -
Thanks, KC. I was just looking that up, because graduation is normally in May.

I have spent hours reading Pub 547, Tax Book and checking out other posts on three websites. Apparently, the only thing that we can do is hope that they can get the repairs finished in 2016 or it will be too late to amend. I talked to my client today and he talked to an appraiser that said it will take $5,000 to do the commercial appraisals for both buildings and that since it's over a year later, he doesn't know how accurate it would be. The repair rules certainly don't take real life into consideration sometimes. There is only so much work that can be finished on their timeline when there is so much widespread damage. The emergency repairs were fixed first to get back into business and then they started fixing the rest. They will still be getting insurance proceeds into 2017. So if I'm not reporting the casualty in 2014, do I just ignore the proceeds? I think that I can since it was in a federally declared disaster area and I don't know if there is a gain or loss, since it's not finished.

I really want to get this return filed as soon as possible, but I am still getting information. My client is in a federally declared disaster area and has damage to 2 business buildings that occurred in 2014. They received partial insurance payments in 2014 and 2015 and will receive more in 2016. The repairs will not be finished until 2017, due to most of the town having been damaged. They have no appraisals to show FMV before or after the damage, so I was going to use the cost to repair to determine gain or loss. IRS rules say that to use the cost of repairs method to determine the decrease in FMV of a property, the repairs must have been made by the due date of the tax return. After the repairs are made, they may file an amended return. I do have the summary of replacement cost claim for 2014, but the IRS says that is not enough to file. This is for an S Corp that leases the buildings and is responsible for the repairs. Does anyone have any experience in dealing with a loss that covers so much time? I hate to have to go back and amend the S Corp and personal returns after so much time. Do I just ignore the insurance proceeds on the 2014 return and deal with it all later? Thanks to anyone that can help to get this off of my desk!
-
Owners of an corp own the buildings personally. The corp pays them rent and also pays for the insurance policy and repairs. I am unsure how to fill out the 4684 when the proceeds went to the corp and the corp made the repairs, but the property will not show up on that tax return anywhere. This was not completed in the tax year so I don't know yet how to show any basis adjustment that may have to be made when it is held personally. I hope that this makes sense. Thanks for any insight anyone has on this. Everything that I looked up was talking about damage to leasehold improvements and personal property made by the tenants.

When I tried to enter a new topic in the main forum, it automatically brings up the last topic that I added in the subject. If I delete that and start over, does that delete my original post? It did not do this when I started a new topic in this Help forum. I'm sorry if I'm dense.

My hubby's first ICD was a Medtronic, but they replaced it with a St. Jude. We are so grateful for each of them!

Apparently, those on Medicare will receive a 1095-B. We just received one for my husband.
