  1. Here is an example of one PIA. The school forms have her ex's address because his mom pays the tuition, the activity forms have his address because they have his address because that is how his kid's can get into that location's sports and church has his address because they go to school there. I know that the kids live with Mom, because they are closely related to me. She is searching for something to prove that they live with her besides the decree. I have wasted way too much time trying to treat a freebie the same as everyone else. I would love to just use common sense, but I can't trust that no one else will claim the CTC.
  2. Thanks, Judy for the ideas on homeschool kids. That helps me with the older ones. I will check and see about midwife records for the younger ones.
  3. I'm so confused. I see that some preparers are requiring birth certificates and SS cards, besides the proof of residency. I can see it with new clients or new dependents but with long time clients or relatives, I am already getting pushback when I tell them that I need this additional information. I have an issue with some clients that homeschool their kids, have no health insurance and the kids are born at home. I can get SS cards and birth certificates, but I don't know what to get for proof of residence. The AOTC credit is not an issue to me, because I normally get the bursar report anyway and book receipts. I don't know if I am asking for too much info or not enough.
  4. I am so sorry. I have not had this happen, but will definitely be on the lookout.
  5. Thanks, again.I will get more information when he calls me back on Friday. He says that he is just getting an account open to move back there in the future. So far, it is under $10,000. He is still using his US bank account for his income. Everything is subject to tax here, because he is not in the other country enough to owe taxes there. I will have a lot of questions ready for him.
  6. Thanks to all of you. I have been telling him for years that I would be uncomfortable with handling any changes with income out of the country, so it should not be a total shock to him that I don't want to take this on. Just handling all of the ongoing changes in this country gives me more than enough to do.
  7. A long time client who is a sole proprietor service wants to expand his business to a European country. He just left a voice mail on my phone and I need to get back with him tomorrow. He is a dual citizen, but his income has always been US as long as I have known him. He is opening a bank account there. I have not had any clients with FATCA or any other foreign income or assets until now. I ask all of the questions regarding income and bank accounts every year in my questionnaire and organizer. He has not been subject to FATCA until now. I am torn as to whether I should just tell him to find a larger firm. I really have enough on my plate, that I don't know if I can take on more work that I am not current on. I would appreciate any thoughts from any of you that work with clients with foreign income. I am assuming that he gets a foreign tax credit on his income earned overseas. Thanks so much!
  8. I read the rules on stockpiling, but I just want confirmation that I read them correctly. I have a bunch of prior year 1040's that I am wrapping up. May I have the clients sign the 8879 now and transmit them when efile opens in January or do I have to wait to give them to the clients so that I am not stockpiling? I believe that it's not stockpiling if the IRS isn't open for efile yet. I just do not want to paper file all of these returns. One of the clients needs them right now for a loan. Thanks!
  9. Sometimes I feel like I have too much of a personal connection to my clients. I've known most of them for 30 or more years. I have lost many of them and now prepare returns for the grandkids. I know more about many of them than I would like to know. I feel like a therapist for many and they would love for my to be their attorney, banker and financial advisor, but I don't get into any of that stuff. I do have to try to limit my time with some of them or they would stay for hours and I would never get any work done. I care a lot about my clients and that is one of the reasons that it is difficult for me to raise my fees. I know that coming to me is a financial burden for some and I give them a discount, even though my time spent with them warrants a much larger fee. I hear about it constantly from my family and it is difficult now that I am the breadwinner since my husband became disabled. I did lose a couple of clients last year that get later and later every year about bringing in their work way after my deadline. I finally put my foot down in 14 and put them on extension, instead of busting my rear to get their returns done in April.
  10. I just wanted to warn anyone that is planning on submitting returns. I know that this should be in the efile forum, but I didn't see much activity there lately. There is a problem with the EFC site. There are numerous posts on the ATX forum and I have called and talked to customer service. I transmitted a returns on Monday and it still says 'transmitted to EFC". They won't or can't tell me if it has been transmitted or not. I thought it would be fixed yesterday, but now they don't know when it will be fixed. I don't even know if it affects current returns being filed or just a few days.
  11. I detest all of their garbage. If I could get away from using QuickBooks or having any of my clients use them, I would be ecstatic.
  12. The last live one that I go to every year is an update around the second week of December. They also have a client letter that you can buy and I use parts of in my annual letter. I also take Vern Hoven's 16 hour tax update webinars. He comes here for two days, but I can attend them in 4 hour chunks online and be more flexible. It's also cheaper than the live one and I can wear my jammies if I want.
  13. I always put off my webinars until November and December when I finally slow down a little. I need 80 hours in two years, also. I have signed up for everything but 3.5 hours. I only physically attend a two day seminar, because I really like the speakers and it's more reasonably priced than most of our state society offerings.
  14. Thank you for the answers. I called the tax practitioner line and since there is no probate and the personal reps will not be court appointed, my mom just needs to sign as surviving spouse on a new POA for her husband. That will make all of our lives much easier. I just want to still have the right to call them and try to get the refund back to her.
  15. Thank you, all. I will fill out a Form 56 and get it signed.
  16. I apologize for asking what is probably a stupid question. My brain is kind of mushy and I couldn't find (or grasp) quickly what I need to do. I have been dealing with an identity theft issue involving my step-dad and mother's 2015 refund. He passed away on Thursday. I have POA's for both of them, but his expired at death. The IRS has not paid out their refund yet. Can I continue representing them with just Mom as surviving spouse or do I need to get one of his executor's to sign another 2848 tomorrow at the funeral? Mom will be the only one entitled to the refund. Thanks for any answers. I'm pathetic, but I still have to shop for me to find an appropriate dress to wear, because we have been so busy.
  17. I will be passing this additional $5 fee on to my clients as a line item. They need to pay for being late. I have too many of them that are behind through their own fault.
  18. I just had a client drop off their 2015 work with their 2014 8879. Husband signed 1/15/16, spouse 4/15/16 and my check was dated 6/15/16. I hope it is OK that I used today as the date signed when I transmitted it. That is when I signed added their OIN
  19. I wrapped up the last one that had all of the information at 1 AM on 10/17 and e-mailed them for signature. Had to resend to another officer, because the first one texted me that he wouldn't open the email until late that night. I am just glad to be able to wind down a bit and get out the quarterlies, sales taxes, bookkeeping and all of the late returns in to try to start fresh in January. I just need to register for four more hours of CPE and I will have all of that figured out for the year.
  20. I don't pay the deposits for my clients. I tell them when and how to do it. I have too many that have gotten behind and I will not be responsible for their problems. I am dropping payroll as fast as I can. I quit taking any new payroll clients three years ago. I'm hoping that they will start going away by attrition. Some of them actually learned how to use their QuickBooks and made my life easier.
  21. That sucks! I guess I won't complain about the five large ones that I have left. This is one of the times that I am really glad that I work at home. Lots of late nights and I can watch the football game in the other room!
  22. I am so sorry. Sending prayers to you and your family.
  23. I am sorry for your clients, Catherine. My Florida clients are all on the Gulf side. The devastation that has happened up and down the coast is so sad. I am sure that there will be extended due dates for those in the damaged areas.
  24. I made it home last night from Orlando. I am never going to Florida again if there is ANY chance of a storm within 2,000 miles. We certainly didn't expect that we would have any effects that far inland. We got there late Monday night and by Wednesday afternoon were trying to find flights home. I am just glad that it wobbled and was ten miles farther offshore than they expected. At least we used our park tickets on Tuesday and Wednesday so they didn't go to waste. I was ready to drive home, but my husband vetoed it. He didn't want us driving in that traffic and it was not easy to find gas. A lot of gas stations were out of fuel until after the storm. I finally bit the bullet and bought tickets for myself and my son's girlfriend for Saturday AM, which were cancelled. I changed the flights twice and was so happy to see Omaha last night. My son can fly in any airline's jumpseat, but he had to request an additional day to report back to his hub, because they closed the airport Thursday afternoon until 10 Saturday AM. Going through a hurricane was not on my bucket list, but now I can say that I've seen hurricane force winds and rain. We were lucky, because our timeshare did not lose power, but it was very scary with the number of large trees on the property. It was great getting away for a bit, but I was a wreck for two days worrying about how I would get home and knowing how much work I had waiting for me.
  25. I will try Judy's 10 Key. I am just so fast with my actual 10 key that I'm not sure if I will ever give it up. I guess I'm just old.
