  1. *This is not racist or political*, I'm just too freaking busy for this stuff. I got an email today from a client. She is helping some refugees and what do they need to do about filing income taxes? I just told her that I'm sorry, I don't know the answer off the top of my head, I would have a bunch of questions and no time to research.
  2. Please tell me if I am wrong about this stuff. I think that the daughter can still be a dependent for 2016, because she was considered permanently and totally disabled at any time of the year. I am so tired of messy stuff with no warning. Why don't people call me when they have changes during the year? The 48 year old daughter has been on SSI for several years and a dependent of her mom. I open Mom's taxes and see $3,394 on 3 small W2s for the daugher and her normal SSA-1099. I still wasn't concerned, because she was allowed to earn income while disabled. Then I see the 1095B from Medicare that her plan ended on 7/31/16. She apparently did not have insurance for the remaining five months of the year. Then there is a notification the she was approved for SSI again on 2/17/17. I guess Mom will have to pay the penalty for her not having insurance for five months. I have an email in to her Mom to see if there was some insurance that I didn't see. Thanks for any help. I am glad that I could get back on here tonight.
  3. They aren't just nickle and diming PRS people. I have Total Office and they billed me for individual 1099s, not just 1096's as I was told. I have to go back and see if the $5 per prior year return was in my contract or if they added later. I still have no detail in my "billing information". I only use support when I absolutely need it, so they should be making plenty of money from me. I did not receive a collection letter, because they were able to debit my CC. I really hate the idea of looking for new software. I have so much stuff on my plate with my business and family, that the idea of converting returns and learning something new just makes me want to go look for a job doing anything but taxes. I went to a Drake seminar two years ago and a couple people there said that they had problems with Nebraska and Iowa returns being computed incorrectly. That is a hassle that I definitely don't need.
  4. I don't think that you need to worry about it as long as they are not your client. Hopefully, they kept a copy of it. I always show i the distribution on line 21 with another to 0 it out, if it's not taxable on the return with the SS#.
  5. If this is the only 1099Q, then you first deduct the scholarships and then the distributions. The remainder plus any books and eligible fees would be left for tuition credits or tuition deduction. You have to check out the cashier's transactions to see if it was all paid in 2016. I don't remember if you are using ATX or not, but it gets deducted on the education expense detail page for ATX.
  6. I am trying to do my best to get these correct, but I also want to do the best thing for my clients. The student lived at home the first semester and in an apartment the second semester. They do have records for the second semester that they paid for living off campus, but nothing for when he lived at home. I have the college estimates for living off campus and living at home. I am trying to allocate as much of the 529 withdrawals as possible to room and board, if that's even possible anymore. The scholarships were required to be used for tuition, so I don't think that I can move them around by making them taxable. The parents obviously paid for their house and food for him to live with them the first semester. Did they need to have receipts for that to reimburse themselves? I have been reading bunches of articles and still can't decide if they needed to actually bill him. All of the disbursements were below the college's estimated costs of room and board for 1 semester each. Thanks to anyone that has time to look at this.
  7. I am so sorry. I found out from experience that an acceptance of an efiled extension does not stop always mean that another return has not been filed or might be filed. I had a client with an extension accepted, but when we filed the return, the IRS said that one had been filed in February with the wife's SS#. I don't know how that is even possible.
  8. 3 of these are mine. Every damn one of the Nebraska ones goes bad. Nebraska claims that they aren't getting them. They are rejecting for some strange long error.
  9. Please add millennials whose voice mail box is too full for a message and don't respond to texts. I'm sorry, I don't understand the point of Snapchat and I know that they are smart enough to see a missed call.
  10. I never thought about the legality of the 8332 with the IRS after the age of majority. The age of majority in Nebraska is 19, but I just had an ex sign one for my client, because they were both agreed in their decree to alternate until the child received his bachelor's. The child could not claim himself, because he had no income.
  11. I'm pretty sure that I'm behind in completed returns. I haven't checked lately. I definitely have plenty to do, with a lot of complicated returns. Many of my clients have been much later than normal this year, which is driving me nuts. I did check and I don't have information from several that are not normally this late. I do know that I will have extensions to file for a few that passed away and their reps are still pulling information together. I now have eight envelopes of information mailed to me by one clients that have arrived at various times. I'm not sure when it will be safe to finish. Another one is faxing me more info today that they found after three mailings. I could just cry. Getting all of the information for kids and tuition has been a real drag this year, they always have to get it to me later, even though it was in my letter. My being so sick and then my mom getting really sick last week did not help me at all. I lost my husband's (receptionist) help for all of last week while he stayed with my mom. I am tired, crabby and just want to get as much work done as possible before the 16th, because my son just told me that he can come home for Easter for a couple of days and I want to be able to spend some time with him.
  12. Thanks! I could not even find it in the instructions. I just filled out what Drake said to do and everything is truly 0s. They didn't transfer assets or the business until 1/1/17.
  13. That's the only address that I could find. It says the address on the front of the form, but I didn't see an address on the PDF I pulled up.
  14. I'm still looking, but I'm not finding anything in the ATX knowledgebase. I see Drake has a way to mark a return inactive, but I don't see a checkbox or anything in ATX to mark the return inactive. I would really like to transmit this today, but I don't want it to be flagged because I missed something. I'm still checking the other forum and ATX instructions. Thanks
  15. I am so sorry, Joan. I know too well how hard a time this is. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
  16. Catherine, I hope that you are feeling better. I have been miserable with a cold or virus since Wednesday. I just want to sleep and I don't trust myself to do anything but easy returns and even then, they are in slow motion.
  17. Unless she had more medical expenses, I don't know how she could exclude any of the interest income for a federal return. I know that there are some bonds that you pay tax on the interest annually, but it doesn't sound like these are those kinds of bonds.
  18. I'm not an attorney, but I always heard that only insurance can protect your personal assets against a lawsuit. My attorney told me that even my corporation could not protect my assets against my mistake, only against me employees. I don't have employees anymore, but I hope that I have plenty of insurance. I'm not sure what am llc would do in your situation.
  19. A friend messaged me that one of the online softwares wanted to charge an extra $35 to add a Sch CEZ and SE to a return. She wanted to know how much I would charge to do the whole return. I'm sure she thought that I would quote her a lower amount. WTH? I just said I was too far into tax season to take on anything else.
  20. I just lost one that is going to the tax preparer associated with the broker (relation) that talked her into cashing out her annuity that he had sold her to the tune of just short of $1,000,000. She was crying when she called me over the taxes that she has to pay and said that her recently deceased husband would be turning in his grave over the money that he had worked so hard for. I have been furious and sad over the treatment of her, but it's a relative and I can't say a word.
  21. 30 seconds for me to the basement, faster if I fall down the stairs.
  22. I don't do any returns while the clients are here. I rarely have anyone that brings me everything the first time. Especially with the new due diligence.
  23. 1095's are very often worthless in the case of parent's that are not together. Many times the non-custodial parent has to provide health insurance. Most report cards around here don't have addresses. I am so glad that I take very few new clients and no one that just calls me out of the blue. It's tough enough to prove this for people that I already know.
  24. Thank you! I don't know what I would do without you and this group.
