  1. Tom is exactly right. This is a 'capital lease', often called a lease-purchase.
  2. Yeah, obviously a decision made by the marketing department, to make the user appreciate how much complexity the program saved them from. Sadly this works.
  3. Well, wintry mix generally refers to a mixture of freezing rain, ice pellets, and snow. The worst of both, in other words. More likely to bring down tree limbs and power lines, bad road conditions, etc.
  4. Yes to expensing it, if desired, and yes the election should be made annually.
  5. A bank or credit union can give them away, and often do, but not included with a W-2 mailing.
  6. thinking of you frozen friends
  7. A win, except for the effect on his credit. Still, that will drop off after 7 years.
  8. Snowing today in my old home place, but so far this year I have yet to even wear a coat. Did wear a sweater 2 nights. I'm sending warm thoughts your way!
  9. Was that his barber? Or his bartender?
  10. I would make the change on the 2014 return, myself, since you will be filing it after the change has been made. Or you are going to have major headaches over the payroll tax reports, I think. Once they process those, they will link up the 2553 to the new name. If not, it's ONE FORM to explain, not all the multiple payroll forms.
  11. Because the feds sometimes make huge changes that would cost the state a lot of lost revenue. So even if they do eventually conform, they may need time to plan for the effect of the change on their total picture.
  12. It's because they are in a hurry to get their piddling little refund RIGHT NOW. And if they go online and see that they are not getting every penny back, but then if they change the exemption to claiming themselves they do, that's what they file. And sometimes it's actually the parent's fault, IMHO, because the parent is telling them, "if you don't get it all back, I'll pay you the difference", which feeds the sense of entitlement the parents already instilled in them. Heaven forbid they should have to sacrifice ANYTHING for the good of the parents who are providing so much already, right?
  13. There is a box on both the 1065 and the 1120 for a name change. If you are filing a current year return, mark the appropriate name change box of the Form 1120 type you are using: Form 1120: Page 1, Line E, Box 3 Form 1120S: Page 1, Line H, Box 2 If you have already filed your return for the current year, write to IRS at the address where you filed your return to inform them of the name change. In addition, the notification must be signed by a corporate officer. If you are filing a current year Form 1065, mark the appropriate name change box on the form: Page 1, Line G, Box 3. If you have already filed your return for the current year, write to IRS at the address where you filed your return to inform them of the name change. In addition, the notification must be signed by a partner of the business. In some situations a name change may require a new Employer Identification Number (EIN) or a final return. See Publication 1635, Understanding Your EIN, to make this determination.
  14. Actually, I just enjoy doing it and feeling I'm a real part of this community. After Don's death, and moving across the country, I really value the friends that I still share things with here. It is a bonus when I'm able to help with a question or problem.
  15. Every day, as I read this board, I am glad I finally retired! I can't give up keeping up with the tax law, but I'm sure not missing the time stress and the pressure.
  16. But if you are using the election, they are NOT equipment now, they are 'supplies', or 'materials', or 'repairs'. You do not list them separately, you just note in the file the invoices that went into those categories,
  17. Even many college students don't know those things, sad to say.
  18. Yep. And it's embarrassing when you ask Joe about his missing ****** only to realize that it's John who is missing that, Joe is missing something else ?????? . Thank God and 3M for Post-it notes.
  19. It would work. Stupid that you have to go to so much work because some state employee is too lazy to do it right, but not much else you can do.
  20. On the 8606, did you enter her inherited basis?
  21. Yes, that was my solution as well.
  22. 1) Don't put it in as a 1099, just put it on the line in the Line 21 worksheet for Payments for Jury Duty. It's right after the line for Barter Income. 2) Or if you enter the 1099, show it in box 3, since that is where it should be. My choice would be #1
  23. Much tax code is strange, sad to say. AMT, for example.
